beadit, that's such a lovely photo - as saoirse says he looks so much like a grown-up boy not a baby!

I took Aphra to my checkup and the dentist gave her a sticker and said for me to bring her again on my other visits though he wouldn't do anything with her per se. He did advise using a very small amount of toothpaste at the end of the day once her teeth started to come in, to get a bit of extra fluouridation going at an early stage, so DP's started to do that as part of her bathtime routine.

SeaChelles · 26/05/2011 12:04

Thanks for the freezing advice guys.

I haven't looked in to a dentist yet, but we have been brusing his teeth with just a tiny scrape of colgate at least once a day since his first two came through. More to get him used to it than anything really.

bananacurry · 26/05/2011 17:21

Beady Jacks flat head is your fault, Ds1s flat head is my fault!!!!!

Of course it is.

My friend has been told that her dd 7mths has a "panhead" (her words!) because she didn't breastfeed. Yet another example of how bottle feeding is the cause of everything! Apparently its something to do with the way you hold a ff baby when feeding them!

The friend she told this to is recovering from severe pnd. She was on the verge of being admitted to hospital it was that bad. She had to give up bf because of it and her baby has an illness that means if she doesn't eat every 6 hours she will go into toxic shock & be very ill. Why don't these hcps think before they spout out such crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rant over! Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 26/05/2011 19:40

Must have held ds1 in a ff way as he had a flat head and was bf, or could it be that he just laid on the same bit of his head no matter where I put him?!?!

newmum001 · 26/05/2011 19:41

saoirse CC worked after 2 days but she really argued about it on Saturday and Sunday as DP was home and i think she thought if mean mummy won't come to me when i cry then daddy will but i persisted with it and she's really got the hang of it. She still grumbles a bit (sometimes for 10 minutes ish) but she doesn't cry now so i don't bother going back in and she falls asleep on her own. Touch wood the MN curse doesn't bite me in the arse regarding this cause my life is soooooo much easier now and she's started sleeping through again.

Sassy Grace was only 6lb 10oz when she was born so she has flown up the centiles rather quickly but she just likes her food and isn't very mobile yet. The HV suggested she was overweight which is ridiculous as she hasn't got an ounce of fat on her!

SeaChelles · 26/05/2011 20:03

BREAKING NEWS - Oliver does not like lentils! Neither do I! No place for lentils in this house.....yeugh!!! [puke emoticon] Grin

saoirse86 · 26/05/2011 20:52

newmum 2 days! Shock [impressed emoticon] I thought it'd take longer than that. When I tried before I only did it at night. Maybe daytime would be a better place to start. She's only sleeping for 3-4 hour stretches at night at the most so I'd do anything to improve that. Now I've got to get the strength to do it! Confused

Orlaith was 6lb 14oz when she was born so similar to Grace. She's now quite chubby but I think the fact she has a really big head and chubby cheeks makes her look bigger IYSWIM. It's stupid that HV's just look at the weight, surely if a baby's on 98th centile for height and weight then they're perfect, and the same for a small baby. If I was this weight but 6'2" I'd look skinny, or if I was 4'8" I'd look bigger. Surely that's just the same for babies. Confused

saoirse86 · 26/05/2011 20:55

She doesn't look too chubby here does she?

Dixiebell · 26/05/2011 22:10

saoirse, she looks lovely!

Arlo has a bit of a cone head still! Flatter on one side. He has been completely BF, so that's rubbish.

beaditAli · 26/05/2011 23:02

FFS Lumps that's such rubbish!
Last week was Plagiocephaly Awareness Week nationwide to try to get the issue a bit more recognised.

Around 50% of babies now have some form of flattening by 4 months old but in the most part, repositioning techniques and time will sort it out and you'd never know there was any flatness by the time they start school, but not in severe cases like Jack's.
I can't imagine how i'd feel if we'd not begun treatment and then got the letter from the NHS saying: "hey, it's been months but we really think Jack needs to see a neurosurgeon regarding the small issue of the thing that holds his brain and face together!!! But hey, let's see him in 3 weeks from now!
I know some people will think the helmet is severe but look how out of line the ear holes are on this! And that's not actually seeing him from behind/above in the flesh!
The States treat this at the drop of a hat and document that it can cause hearing/sight issues in later childhood. Treatment is definitely necessary in some cases and the first batch of kids from the beginning of the Back to Sleep campaign are starting to crop up in the system with related issues as 10-15 year olds or however long ago it was!

Don't mean to scare anyone but if you'd been to the clinics we've been to in the past few weeks you'd be all the more aware of how common and serious a problem it can be. One girl at our clinic has eyes and ears so so so out of line it's unreal and the plates in her skull are fused now so only minor improvement is possible. Bless her. Her parents wasted 2 years being passed around the NHS then she heard of Ossur (where Jack goes) and it's just about too late for her.

Even if HV could talk freely about repostioning etc rather than just sayin "oh that's normal"??????
Anyway....... who knows. Hopefully the kiddiwinkles that need the help will get it more readily in years to come.

My rant over!

saoirse gorgeous pic and not at all over weight looking to me! and we have more dust than that! Wink

Feeling bad about above rant now incase I make anyone stress about lil tiny flattening. Please don't unless it looks like someone has taken a slice out the back of your lo's lovely head! Grin

sassy34264 · 27/05/2011 07:10

beadit poor jack. ive never heard of it before. there are a fair few flattened heads at the playgroup i go to. one in particular is like howyou described- a piece missing. it looks like someome has sliced the back off.
none of mine have ever had any flattening but thats because im a worse mum than all of you ff holding them wrong people- i put mine to sleep on their fronts. i start off with good intentions but when the tiredness kicks in and i know they sleep better on their fronts, my resolve slips. by the time they could roll it didnt matter how i put them down, they automatically rolled onto their fronts. very naughty mummy. i bet if i put something about putting them on their fronts in the main mumsnet i would be villified!! they'd want to call social services im sure. Smile
hi dixie my two had their 8 month check up and the hv told me to register them with a dentist, but after reading the posts about it, i think i'll wait a bit.
all the pics are gorgeous. and babies are supposed to be a bit chubby, who wants a skinny baby?! isobel has prop forward legs and they are scrummy. i can't get my hand around them! gorgeous.

bananacurry · 27/05/2011 07:44

Cinnamon don't be silly! Of course its nothing to do with positioning!!!

sassy Olly has slept on his front since the day he was born! I'm a baaaad baaaaad mummy too! (By the way Sassy, I'm lumps! I had a bit of a name change while you were away to lumpybananapuree & beady still calls me lumps)

Its my wedding anniversary today! 5 whole years and we haven't killed each other yet!!!!!

beaditAli · 27/05/2011 09:06

Yeay Lumps Have a gorgeous day! Wine by any chance Wink

Blush Jack does have skinny lil legs but what can I do about it??? He's just gonna be a bean stalk for sure and dwarf his mummy.

MN curse kicked in last night as Jack was awake for an hour between 4 and 5 am Sad He is full of cold at the mo tho so I think the Karvol should have come out sooner Blush

Oooooo Happy Bank Holiday weekend! Grin

newmum001 · 27/05/2011 09:44

Oh my god Saoirse look at all the dust on that table, it is disgusting Grin only joking!!! Orlaith looks beautifully in proportion to me. Gorgeously chubby but by no means too chubby! Her hair is beautiful!

I say 2 days but thats just when it started sinking in and she cried a bit less. By day 3 it was taking 15 minutes ish each nap but i wasn't really having to go in and see to her as i only go in if she's cried for 2 minutes solid or if she sounds very upset. Otherwise i just tend to let her get on with it now as i know she can do it. I honestly didn't think i'd be able to do it and the first 2 days were horrible and i literally sat on my bed with my fingers rammed in my ears so i couldn't hear her screaming but it really was worth it. I do honestly think she's started sleeping through again because she knows how to sleep by herself.

Beadit to be honest when you first put pictures of Jacks head on i couldn't really see the flatness but looking at the ear holes on that helmet i can't believe the difference. How can the NHS leave it so long when there is clearly a problem.

beaditAli · 27/05/2011 09:57

I feel the need for a dust combat day now! Grin

Oh bless newmum but like you said..... totally worth it!

Jack is making my birthday card today!! heee heeeeee! Supervised of course.
Oh god..... why did I decide that a bath in the living room was a good idea? Sod the dusting! I'll be moppin up instead!

obeadit jack has skinny legs cos hes gonna be a 6 foot hottie! ha. isobel has rugby players legs cos shes gonna be a dwarf! ha. she is in the 9th percentile for length. what can you do?! there all different, gorgeous and wonderful. Smile
banana congratulations. i hope you have a lovely day. x

beaditAli · 27/05/2011 10:34

I think 6ft is on the short side for men in our family sassy His chances with Daisy aren't looking so good cos she'll need a ladder to reach him! They make a good pair for now tho Grin
He reaches for her toes and when he does she goes for his hair so it's like a bit of a 'row row row your boat' tug of war! Very funny!
Everyday people think Jack is already a year old and some! It's not fair! He's still my lil baby! I do love his skinny lil legs but worry that people think he's never fed! Blush

OP posts:
sassy34264 · 27/05/2011 10:48

awh! if hes owt like jacob, he'd be screaming his head off- if he wasnt fed!
we're all short arses over here! dp is 5'9. and i'm 5'4. i do like tall men - dp is shortest ive evet gone out with. but im the oldest for him (im 7 years older) and thsnks to these 2 pregnancies, definately the fattest! Grin

saoirse86 · 27/05/2011 11:02

Orlaith has been an absolute bloody nightmare the last few nights and I feel like I'm going mad! She's struggling to get to sleep at all. She'll have her feed then I put her down, she cries, eventually goes to sleep, 5 minutes later she wakes, cries, then eventually goes back to sleep. Last night she didn't get to sleep properly till 11.05!!!! Shock Then she wakes every 1-2.5 hours. This morning she woke properly at 7.30, the night before last she went to sleep at 10.45, woke loads, then woke properly at 6.30. I'm finding this so exhausting! I feel like doing cc to get her self settling but I need to find a couple of days where we're not doing anything at nap times to give it a good go I think.

She's also really clingy and cries like I'm hurting her even if she thinks I'm leaving the room. Aaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggghhhhhhhhh!!!

Anyway...

Beadit I hadn't been able to tell from the photo you showed us before but it's very clear from the helmet!! Shock It's a good job you've been able to sort it out, it would have been awful if you couldn't afford to do something yourselves and had to wait for the NHS to get their act together. Sad
Orlaith's got a bit of a mishapen head where it's a bit asymmetric at the back, but it's not really that noticeable. It was looking flat when she was maybe 10 weeks so I started making her go on her tummy lots to help it and luckily it got loads better then.

Since she's been able to roll she's always slept on her front. And she sleeps with her face kind of buried in my old maternity pillow because she won't sleep without touching something with her face. Not only that but I'm actually planning to put any future DC's on their front. Do I win a bad mummy award for all that?! Wink

Beadit He's going to be gooooooooooorgeous! My little Orlaith seems to have the shortest legs, just like mummy and daddy with plenty of chub! Grin

Have a good day banana! 5 years without either of you killing the other is definitely worth celebrating!! Grin

saoirse86 · 27/05/2011 11:08

sassy at least you're allowed to be fat, what are all our excuses?! Wink For some reason the more weight I lose, the bigger my belly's getting. I've had to make a point of making sure people know I'm not preggers and drinking in front of them so they don't start talking about me! Blush

cinnamongreyhound · 27/05/2011 11:19

I always assumed that they treated quickly it the states because they are much more worried about the way they look than here, didn't realise it could cause other problems beaditAli. Wondering whether it can affect speech now, another stick to hit myself with :(. Was reading online today and it said that it can actually happen in the womb if their head is pressed on something which leads to a tendance to lay on that side rather than them just preferring one side to the other. When Luke was born the midwife told me he had a cs head and his is perfectly round, he did have a funny squashed up ear but it was the same as the other one within 3 weeks of him being born.

I didn't notice the dust until you mentioned it saoirse86!! And Orlaith is gorgeous Grin

Congratulations bananacurry, hope you have a lovely anniversary. We have been married 5 years in August, not sure where it's gone really. Best years of my life though, I might moan about him but I love him so much!

I can't believe how grown up some of these babies look, I think it's the hair. Luke's is getting thicker but it's so blond you can barely see it, not sure where it comes from with 2 dark haired parents although dss has blond hair and his mum is darker than me.

Off on holiday tomorrow, just in time for the temperature to drop by 5C and the rain to come! Don't care though, not having to rush anywhere (don't include lay-ins as my son has his own ideas about getting up time!) and spending time with my boys, plus an indoor heated pool and lots of ice cream and fish and chips Grin. Will try and keep up from my iphone otherwise I will have so much to catch up on!! Enjoy the bank holiday :)

Queen of posting today but felt it might be an idea to add this to help raise awareness. Steve Mottram is the UKs leading specialist on Plagio and did Jack's initial consultation.
Might help if anyone is searching mn for support on the issue. Hmm

Crikey, busy on here today! I also saw a cranial osteopath about ds1s head. He said that if they have a tendency to favour 1 side than the muscles in the neck on that side shorten so make if uncomfortable to lay the other way.

As for celebrating, there's none of that! Dh is at work till 9.30! We have just had a romantic trip to "the range" its just opened today in Lincoln & we got a nice piece of wall art for the lounge! And more excitingly, we're going to see fireman sam live tomorrow! Grin
