Busy can sympathise with he nipp wrenching thing!! seth does the same can't seen to just let go of it when hes full so writhes around until hes wrenched off!!

sometimes he only feeds for short bursts aswell but if hes going a good length of time beteween feeds and gaining weight then he must be getting enough!!

How are you mamging to pump off 5 oz/ The most i can get is 3-4 oz and thats from both breasts doing it until i'm sore! any tips for me??

beartime · 03/12/2005 10:02

Busy have you tried getting him to latch on when he's not too hungry - that helped me when mine had nipple confusion. I woke him up a bit early and then fed him while he was a little sleepy still.

Mine feeds for about 10 mins then needs a burp usually. Then another 5, then often I have to change his nappy to wake him up so he'll take more. I try and get him to go 30-40 mins each feed as I'm feeding 4hrly, but this morning he only took 20 mins and that was IT, and he still went 4 hrs and had to wake him up. But I think that breast has a faster letdown than the other as he usually coughs and splutters on it and it drips and sprays more than the other, so he may get more quicker from that side than the other. Maybe you have a fast letdown, or he's just an efficient sucker - they do say some get what they need faster than others. (Hey sometimes books are useful )

Also have you tried burping him while feeding - helps mine to squirm less. And also I hand express till it lets down with the painful breast so he doesn't suck too hard on it.

Congratulations SarahS, welcome to the other side!! Welcome to little Lottie too

Got our first smile yesterday At last!! Just a little one but it was meant for me! Getting a few little ones this morning too Now we are constantly pestering her for them all the time though now, the poor girl!

Ooh, sore nips - how horrid! Know that feeling too well! Only thing I can suggest is to keep slathering the Lansinoh on and keep them covered (My MW said if you air them they only dry up and then rip open again when baby latches on) I used silk breast pads too (on top of a normal breastpad) which have healing properties. I also have got some silk napy liners which are brill for nappy rash - better than any cream. Got mine from Little Green Earthlets

Layla(andSeth)smum, Twinkle and Diege are meeting in Manchester in Jan, but we could meet up at Caruso's or the Book cafe or somewhere before then if you like? I'm from Chellaston BTW, are you from Heanor or Codnor or somewhere up there?

Hope chacha's had her little boy now and is enjoying him thoroughly!! It seems she's been pregnant forever! Aw, our antenatal is coming to an end (I am enjoying our post-natal though )

Right, dd is awake and needs a bath

novabrandybutterpowder · 03/12/2005 12:38

Laylasmum - how about 'Sleighlasmum' or 'sleighbellsringareyoulisteningsmum' ? lol!

I find it incredible that I seem to love DD more every day. It's a real joy to see her growing and changing.

Hope you're all having a good weekend, DH is off paintballing today so I didn't get my usual saturday lay in, and I have to do the night shift tonight as he will be 'too tired' lol!!

Getting a bit more mobile now, managed to take Nat to the butchers and to pick up the dry cleaning today - funny when even that seems like an achievement (thinks back to the days when she used to make TV shows...)

beartime · 03/12/2005 12:48

Busy - sorry I was just thinking, if you're in the first week of birth they are often very sleepy and will go four or five hours in between feeds and then go back to sleep. But in the first week even the feeding on demand people say don't let them go more than 3 hrs between feeds, because otherwise your milk supply won't be stimulated enough, and they won't get enough to eat. Also that would add to your engorgement, and make it harder for him to latch on and more painful for you. Most people (including la leche if I remember rightly) say you should wake them after 3 hrs to feed, if they haven't already woken, at least in the first week anyway.

beartime · 03/12/2005 12:50

Rodehoho - how do the silk liners work with washing? d'you put them in with the nappies? And isn't it a pain to wash the poo off first?

Londoner · 03/12/2005 14:37

Hellooooo!

Great birth story Busy...you crazy lady! LOL at you terrorising other shoppers with your contractions! Sorry to hear you're feeling low, d'you think it's hormones or tiredness? Could you do nice stuff for yourself to feel better? Make yourself a really delicious sandwich & nice hot cup of tea for lunch, stuff you might do if you had a guest, perhaps make some time for a hot bath, even if you only have 3 mins in there I find the ritual of running the water & putting in generous helping of bubbles/oil can make you feel better? It smells so good! Or shut door on kitchen 4 a while and read stories in bed/on sofa with Alex & Alfie? Is there a post-natal/toddler group near you? Your health visitor will know if you're not sure, why not ask...., I went from cringing at the thought of them to using them as a lifeline! HTH....hang in there, you'll feel stronger soon....well done for encouraging your boys to bond so well, that will have taken a lot of energy......

Londoner · 03/12/2005 14:53

rodeho, wow...v.impressed at you and your xmas shopping! Also silk n.liners sound interesting, I've been using paper & flushing them down the loo...d'you rinse them 1st?
bear, glad to hear yo're enjoying bf on demand...that's what I always do & it works really well for me too.
Hi golden...plenty of time til June....you must be so organised to do mixed feeding[v.impressed emoticon].
Hi twinkle must be really hard with a husband whizzing off to work at ugodly hour what time does he get back?
Hi nova, lol at your meal with your friend....sounds familiar! Glad to hear Natalie's ok after her BCG , well done you!
Hi layla, good to hear Seth's doing so well...wow 10lbs 2oz?!
busy apparently best cure 4 sore nips is leaving them 2 air dry?
Hi Diege and everyone else too!

Oh , so pleased 2 hear Jess is smiling rodeho so now I can confess that Elizabeth smiles like a maniac these days!

beartime · 03/12/2005 15:41

Oh. another thing that helped with the sore nipple thing was using Tommy Tippee Breastpads - they felt so much better! (sounds like an advert ) But I guess at the end of the day it'll go away soon

SleighlasandSethsmum · 03/12/2005 19:30

Nova went with your idea for xmas name!!

Diege · 03/12/2005 20:07

Hello all! . Have been 'offline' for past few days as having internet problems. Started to feel panicky about missing out on chat (withdrawal symptoms).
Haven't had chance to catch up yet, but TWINKLE I will check train times asap for the 13th; I haven't forgotten! Also, RODEO, it would be great to see you in a January meet-up, if not before!
Must watch x-factor (not that mumsnet comes behind Chico et al !!).
Diege

Busyalexsmummy · 03/12/2005 21:26

Thanks for the advice ladies, although londoner you said air them, whereas rodeo, you said not to?? now im confuzzled!
Well whilst out shopping today, popped into mothercare to feed alfie, fed him off left boob for about 15mins and realised once we were home why it was hurting so much(thought it was because it was really cold), hes made the (excuse the lame description!) bobbly bits on the end of the nipple bleed it really f**king hurts, I rang my mate whos mum is a health visitor who said to just express off that side and feed off the other till I see the m/w again on monday-cant for the life of me see what im doing wrong, cant see whats different from how he latches on that side to the other??...
I can really see why so many people give up b/f within the first 2 wks- my nipple feels like someones poking a hot needle in the end of it

Kristingle · 03/12/2005 23:27

BAm - sorry you are having such a bad time BF. If the pain is like a needle going through your breast, could it be thrush? I've not had it but I've heard it described as a stabbing pain.

Ignore me if I'm talking rubbish.I am already thinking that I cant remember how to Bf and its only 3 montsh since i stopped

Just hanging out here as no one else left on the Due in Novemeber thread

tessasmum · 04/12/2005 15:23

HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY BUSY

Hope you have a lovely day whatever you decide to do.

Diege · 04/12/2005 15:35

Hello all, and many happy returns BAM . TWINKLE, I will bite the bullet and pick up a train timetable tommorrow, so will have times for next week. Contemplating sling over pram for journey, as Warrington station isn't pram friendly, and not very forthcoming with any help! I was going to suggest Wagamama's for lunch, but not sure how long it would take us fromPiccadily (though if we had slings we could get on the free bus??) - oh and I am hopeless when it comes to decision making at the mo'(well, all the time really)...
LOL re: Tescos . We are getting the tree out this afternoon, though all the excitement seems strangely directed towards the packet of chocolate tree decortations!
Libby is doing well, though still difficult to keep awake in day. Have been waking to feed at 10.30-11, and then she wakes againn at about 3, thgen 6/7, but really struggles to settle at 3 after a bottle, cries on and off for an hour, and usually wakes one of the others up . Trting to catch 40 winks in the day though, and it does really help.
Not had timke to go through other posts yet, but hope everyone is doing well. Has Chacha had baby yet? (and congrats to sarahsausage - love the name!)

tessasmum · 04/12/2005 15:40

Busy - I got that with my right nipple within the first week of feeding Ash. Left nipple was a bit sore but nothing like right one. Think I was holding him slightly differently to right boob, not quite so level. It did help when I used a cushion to prop him up more.
REALLY hurt though and I just wasn't expecting it as I had fed Tessa for a year and thought I knew all about this bf lark. It sorted itself out by about 2 weeks, with some help from my mw who had a good look at my positioning, and it has been fine since.
Use the advice/support that's out there because once you get it right and your boobs are painfree the whole thing is great.

I've also got a 5-10 minute feeder here, with the very rare 20 mins thrown in to confuse me! He is growing like a weed though so its obviously is just the way he does it. Did concerm me to start with as Tessa took much longer but when he was weighed at 15 days he had gone up from 8lbs 4oz at birth (and at 5 days) to 9lbs 8oz!!

twinkle1 · 04/12/2005 18:42

DIEGE
i dont have a sling so i will have to bring pushchair, i know the trams from picaddily are good and market street station is right in the center if you know somwhere good to eat i have only actually been to the center of manchester 3 times
got to go feeding required!!!!
twinkle

Londoner · 04/12/2005 21:11

Hi ladies!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BAM! Key to the door etc..... Wow 21, so cool!

Hello Sharon glad you found us and also that you and Sam sound like you're doing so well.

.............well, we've made it through another week....yay

beartime · 04/12/2005 22:45

how long does it take to get to pre-preg weight while breast feeding?

ohKARMAallyefaithfulMOTHER · 04/12/2005 22:54

Hi all.

Really enjoyed reading the latest posts as I had a few queries about BFing that you've all answered! Isn't MN great?

In a nutshell, Ella also feeds for only 10-15 mins sometimes. On a good day we can do 30-40 mins. I did worry about her not getting enough hindmilk but she can sleep for 3 hrs so she must be ok. When she feeds she gulps lots of air so she has to be winded lots like beartime's baby. One burp is never enough, she often does two, with a fart thrown in for good measure. She farts more than me, FGS!! I've been trying the BW's EASY technique & changing her nappy after a feed. The idea is to wake her up to make sure she's had enough milk & also to let her fall asleep on her own. It works half the time. When she wakes during her sleeps, she is able to go back to sleep so I'm pleased about that. DS would never do that.

Also, she seems to be awake a lot for one so young. From about 3 days, she spends at least 2-3 hrs a day awake. I think she's a bit nosy but it sometimes means she gets too tired & can't switch off. I end up feeding her to sleep which I really want to avoid. Anyone else's baby like this?

Been a long ramble but I value your opinions about these feeding issues. The HV is coming on Wednesday but I'm not entirely sure she'll have the answers.

Before I forget....I painted my toenails today!!! How fab is that? My toes were seriously in need of attention & I'm chuffed I could get down there.

Also, happy birthday, BAM!! I feel so old....

Off to bed to get a small morsel of sleep before my gorgeous dd needs booby.

ohKARMAallyefaithfulMOTHER · 04/12/2005 22:56

Beartime, it probably depends on how much chocolate you throw down your neck (like me!!)

I don't know how many calories you're supposed to consume but I know you should really hang on to an extra half a stone above your normal weight as a reserve for feeding.
