Better night last night Thank God - can feel little drizzle of sanitly coming back to me today! as well as ray of hope that things might be better. She is in flying form during the day at the mo and really chirpy and happy bless her!

Isnt it really sad how everything to do with motherhood has to be reported in such an inflammatory way and that women are so defensive about it rather than supportive! My mum is a real 'food is love' person with a sweet tooth as big as herself. So of course she was all for me feeding ds1 (he was weaned early but he was huge!) she couldnt understand why I wouldnt let her give him chocolate before 1 and my aunt wanted to give him icecream at 6months. We had a reasonable chat tho and things were so different in their days. Choc was a rare treat and food was plainer and less processed. There is too much salt and sugar in todays processed food that in the end she agreed she would just follow my lead. I will be waiting another while with Phoebe as she is only just taking to bottles and quantity now.

Actually when I asked her about Bfin she just said it never worked for her she just didnt have enough milk and dried up. Turned out it was practice at the time for nurses to take babies by night and feed them so mums could sleep and recuperate. This in turn meant tho that their prolactin and milk production was screwed up and resulted in failing to bf properly. How sad is that? so many deprived of the chance because of common practice. Still ehlped my argument about changing times etc.
Welcome mcfee
Melly Hope all is better soon!
banana Dh is on about Phoebe moving to own room. Im in no way ready! Not sure I will be anytime soon.

Dont want to go back to work at all. Its ages away and still hanging over me. Am feeling terribly sorry for myself

clumsymumluckybaby · 14/01/2011 22:29

okay,paragrah taken from here

  1. Infant tongue thrust and breastfeeding

Tongue thrusting is when you put your tongue between your teeth before swallowing. Babies have a tongue thrust reflex that protects them against choking. When a foreign substance is placed in their mouths they will immediately push it back out.

Breastfeeding a baby with chronic tongue thrust can cause huge breastfeeding problems. Many moms will need to train their baby?s tongues so that when they breastfeed, they stop thrusting the tongue. The training usually involves putting a gloved finger into baby?s mouth and pressing down. Babies are then taught to suck correctly.

If your child has tongue thrust, breastfeeding is the best choice since it helps baby develop his teeth and jaw. The sucking during breastfeeding encourages the growth of straight, healthy teeth.

Tongue thrust is more common among bottle-fed babies. Doctors have found that forward tongue thrusting in infants can result in breathing from the mouth, lip biting, gum disease and strange facial features.

Some breastfeeding moms might find that baby only has this tongue thrusting problems when they try to feed baby purities or other solids. Moms should just remember that children are still developing during the first few years and that usually by the age of 6 any normal thrusting should lessen. 97% of all newborns have tongue thrust when they swallow. By the age of about 12 children have usually grown completely out of tongue thrusting.

sorry its so 'breastfeeding biast,it's all i could find on the subject for now,i'll try to find a more rounded opinion if i can!!Grin

clumsymumluckybaby · 14/01/2011 22:31

also,my DD hasnt done it since she was about 7 months old...

clumsymumluckybaby · 14/01/2011 23:24

hi guys, ive been meaning to ask you guys something...

Arlo's little toenailS point upwardsConfused i asked the doctor about it and he said it was to small to see...but i can see it! so i figured you'd be able to see your baby's little toenails too, could you just tell me which way they're pointing!

im a bit worried it will start curling backwards and grow into his toe soon...am i worrying over nothing? is it common? or should i puch the doctor for a diagnoses?

TIA

clumsymumluckybaby · 14/01/2011 23:25

push not puch!Blush

cinnamongreyhound · 15/01/2011 03:10

Sure it's not punch clumsymumluckybaby? Ds1 has the same with his big toes never thought to visit dr, just keep them short. If your worried go back!!

comixminx · 15/01/2011 07:21

I will try to take a photo of Aphra's little toes for you! Heh.

On a slightly related note, what do you all use to trim finger and toe nails? I was told that I could trim them by biting them off (getting her into bad habits early, only by proxy! How weird but still). However, that's not feasible for her toenails, for one thing, and for another it still leaves sharp bits on her fingernails and I'm fed up of being scratched as she feeds.

cinnamongreyhound · 15/01/2011 09:22

I just use nail clippers comixminx, my mum told me to bite them off but I really hate the idea! I usually do them while he's feeding or asleep but yesterday I did them while he was awake and he was pretty still.

Off swimming soon, Luke is just feeding so will probably sleep a bit while we all eat and get ready. Reallyhoping he enjoys it as much as ds1 did/does.

clumsymumluckybaby · 15/01/2011 10:05

blimey cinnamon you were up at 3am!

thanks guys,i wouldnt worry but it goes straight up from the root...and theyre to tiny to cut,ive tryed clippers, biteing and scissors to no avail....Hmm

maybe i'll go back and punch push the doctor for a diagnoses then Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 15/01/2011 10:30

Yep, Luke is up at 1 or 2 or 3 and then 5 or 6 or 7. He's in his own room so I get up and sit in my nursing chair with my iphone for entertainment!

clumsymumluckybaby · 15/01/2011 10:33

i dont think i could work an iphone at 3am...

i can barely work the clips on my nursing bra....

you're amazingGrin

comixminx · 15/01/2011 11:19

Ha ha cinnamon, I too use my iPhone in the dead of night! Am less likely to post then, though - I mostly just read those long absorbing tales of abusive husbands or weird MILs that you get on MN... Grin

Aphra's toenails definitely don't go straight up from the root, clumsymum. I did take a photo - hard to do given her wriggliness! - but I'm not sure where to upload it as it seems a bit of a weird thing to photograph! Grin

Thanks also for the info about tongue thrust by the way.

mellymooks · 15/01/2011 11:39

Morning (just) am having a very decadent morning sat at the breakfast bar, listening to Pentangle, drinking dandelion coffee and looking at my gorgeous sleeping baby, whilst DP and DD out and about!! Ahhh makes it all better Smile

Here's a link to a lovely piece written on BF yesterday from the Guardian:
www.guardian.co.uk/lifeandstyle/2011/jan/14/breastfeeding-comment-joanna-moorhead?intcmp=239

I just felt like it re-dressed the balance after all the negativity yesterday.

clumsy I shall look at flynn's toe nails and get back to you!

JessemyParkson · 15/01/2011 13:32

Hi all, apologies for being so quiet and I apologise if this is long! Mary's been under the weather since Weds night, and I didn't feel too fab on Thursday.

She was running a temp the past couple of days and not sleeping too great during the night, but she's much much happier today (phew)

I've just briefly flicked through, but won't comment on everything.

Weight, Mary was 14lb 6oz at 15 weeks, 7lb 11oz at birth,

Nails, depends on how wriggly she is! If she's extra wriggly, or I've been badly scratched I'll bite them off, but usually I try to use clippers. Her toenails all grow fairly normally but hug the end of her toes once grown past the quick - I have to pry them away from her toe to trim them. I'm curious to see what her nails will be like - DH has very papery nails that split and tear easily, and once they've grown a little they don't shape well. DS's are the same. But mine are tough and shape well, so I'm hoping she takes after me!

And Mary has tongue thrust when feeding her solids, but she stops it herself once she gets into the hang of eating. It also depends on if she likes what I'm feeding her! She happily slurps up her oat-based foods but she's not too impressed on the rice & veg one I give her for lunch. Saying that though, it is a new one, and she has been under the weather. She seemed to enjoy it a little more today.

Feeding in the night, I take a little while to surface, so she has to wait anyway. If she settles down again, then I don't bother, but if she really starts to cry then I'm all hers! :o

I fell asleep on the sofa last night, snuggled up with my dog, and watching TV. DH didn't have the heart to disturb me... he fell asleep on t'other sofa with t'other dog, but he woke up about 2am, and shuffled off to bed. I woke up when Mary surfaced at 5am, so clearly she needed the sleep (went down at 6.30) and I needed it too! I don't usually drop off - that's normally DH!

JessemyParkson · 15/01/2011 13:45

clumsy which doula course were you thinking of going to? I'm torn about the Bath one, as I'd need someone to look after Mary for a couple of days, and I'd prefer it if she was a bit older.

I think I might seriously investigate hosting one as it'd be later in the year, so Mary'd be easier for someone to look after (ha!)

cinnamongreyhound · 15/01/2011 16:14

Well... Swimming was a disaster! They have 3 pools tried the activity and big pool first so we could all be together but Luke was too cold and screamed but he loved the baby pool after less than 10 mins someone poo'd in it and it was closed! Sat on the edge watching the boys in the other pool then went off to get changed. Waited ages for a baby change to become free all full of people without babies :( and am now drinking a coffee in the cafe waiting for the dh, dss and ds1. Grrrrr....

JessemyParkson · 15/01/2011 16:33

Oh dear, poor you cinnamon :(

We were meant to take Mary swimming today but where she's been a bit poorly we decided not to. Oh well.

JodeyLea · 15/01/2011 17:33

My gosh! This forum just moves toooooo fast.

McFee Harlyn was last weighed on the 5th Jan when he was 14 weeks + 4 ad he weighed in at a massive 15.15. I too worry sometimes as he seems so much heavier than other babies his age. He is a total milk guzzler. Which leads me onto to routine saisoire. Harlyn only cat naps through the day. He has about 4 or 5 10/20 minute max. At 8pm he has a warm bath, massage and last bottle. I put him down at 9:15 and by 9:30 he has been asleep this week. He then wakes up between 5:30 & 6:30 for a feed before having another 2 hours ish sleep. He drinks a lot in the day which he always has done since bringing him home from hospital. Even when I BF, he would guzzle all day and sleep 12-6 through the night. We have been very lucky with his nigh time sleeping.

As for parents thinking they know best, my mom is one of those that says "when I was pregnant with you....blah blah blah". So annoying.

Harlyn now 15 weeks + 1

saoirse86 · 15/01/2011 19:19

We went swimming yesterday with my sister and her DD. Orlaith really seemed to like it but Imara was not keen. The pool was really quite cold and Imara kept crying when she was in the water and pulling her legs up when we tried to put her in. She is teeny tiny though (she's 17+1 and was weighed at 11lb 11oz on monday, compared to Orlaith's 14lb 10oz despite being a week younger!) so the cold probably affected her more. We thought they'd sleep really well after swimming but no, if anything it was worse! Confused

It's occured to me today that maybe Orlaith's sleep is worse because she's been feeding a lot less during the day and maybe she's just waking up hungry. So I decided to get some 6mth+ teats to see if she'll take more and then sleep more too. I'm not holding my breath it'll work but anything's worth a try! Hmm

clumsy Orlaith's big toenails both curl up a bit, I haven't really thought anything of it though. I cut them with clippers. I used to do it while she was asleep after the first time I did it while she was awake, she moved and I cut her skin Blush . Now she'll stay still just long enough for me to do it awake.

Orlaith 16+1

Chelle1986 · 15/01/2011 19:36

I managed to not get baby puke down me all day and have just put Olly to bed and come downstairs and dribbled cola all down my front!! Doh!!

Olly's toenails are triangular shaped! Don't think they point upwards though clumsy. We have only cut his fingernails once - DP did it while he slept on me. They need doing again though because he keeps pinching me!!!

Spent lovely day with my Mummy today and Olly was very well behaved. I think I am very lucky with my mum, as she never gives me the "when you were a baby" or "you should be doing this" lines - she just says "he's your baby - you know him best". Am very lucky to have her. She is only 42 you see (I'm 24) - so she's like my best mate most of the time.

DP still not home - he was riot police today and the Crewe footy match. Hopefully he will be home soon.

Olly had 4 spoons of baby rice at lunch today! He seems to really like it - then had a 7.5 ounce bottle 20 mins later and slept for 2 hours on his beanbag! Grin Re: the tongue thrust thing - Olly doesnt seem to have it - he doesn't push the rice back out (dribbles yes!!) but it doesn't get pushed back out by his tongue.

Is anyone else trying baby rice yet? With the exception of the lovely cinnamon which I know about! How is it goin by the way lovely?

Olly 16wks tomorrow.xxx

mcfee - dont know what Olly weighs at the min! Haven't had him weighed for ages! I must go next week! But when he had his 2 and a half month check he was 13lb 7oz - I reckon he is a good 15/16lb now at 16 weeks. He was born on 26th Sept.

Chelle My mums like yours (although a good few years older!) She accepts times have changed. She does advise but not in an interfering way & doesn't get offended if I disagree. She absolutely loves having the boys over night & I have to write Ollys routine down to the last letter. even things like "9pm boil kettle and fill flask!" She's of the opinion if she does things exactly as I want I'll let the boys go. My MIL is the exact opposite & will never have them overnight! Her loss!

FF do you give water?? If so, how much, how often and when in relation to milk feeds? I didn't give ds1 any & ot took till he was about 18mths to really drink enough for me to be happy.

Ollys toe nails curl up in the corners & ds1s are pretty square. I cut them weekly with baby nail scissors.

We've just had a lovely fish korma cooked from a recipe from Jamies fish suppers! it was as good as any you'd get in an indian & am waashing it down with a nice glass of red! Happy Saturday night!

cinnamongreyhound · 15/01/2011 19:54

Shock at you only cutting Olly's nails once chelle1986, I cut Luke's once a week or he scratches his face to pieces!! He still hates eating but I may try baby rice as it's pretty tasteless. The trouble is by the end of next week I'm supposed to be starting him on 2 small pots of yogurt a week but if I can't I won't. I'll give the EAT people a ring as I'm not prepared to force feed him for the sake of the study, if he's not ready he's not ready! I think jessemyparkson has started weaning Mary and sassy34264 has definitely tried isobel and Jacob on baby rice.

Chelle1986 · 15/01/2011 19:57

banana - olly has about 1 or 2 ounces of water a day at the minute.

cinnamon - god they must grow quick! Ollys hardly seem to grow at all!

cinnamongreyhound · 15/01/2011 19:59

bananastew I give Luke water although I'm bfing and I did with ds1 from 4 months. I don't really like bottles for older children and wanted to avoid him getting attached to one if he didn't need to so I gave the tommee tipper first beaker to him which takes a lot of getting used to! Luke has it once or twice a day and mostly chews it but he is definitely drink some water and he doesn't mind it but if he's getting hungry he gets angry that it's not milk!
