That's good in theory clumsymumluckybaby but it depends on your circumstances. We have a large mortgage, dh had debt from previous marriage as he wanted to leave his ex in a good position so dss could stay in his home, he pays maintenance and has a £400 a month petrol bill as we can't afford to love closer to his work so there is no way we could live on less. I have has moments since Luke was born MammyG that I worried I was on the verge of depression mostly when very tired but I have a wonderful dh who reminds me that things could be worse and that we have to be thankful for what we have. It usually takes me a while but I sort myself out. It then makes him miserable for a few days that he can't make enough so I can stay home! I think you should talk to your dh about it then you wouldn't feel so alone even if it makes no difference to your situation.

patito I love dh helpful comments but I am probably as guilty as him Blush

ReNameMe · 01/02/2011 22:30

I know cinnamon just thought id say how we manage...we live in rented atm, (will be buliding our on on an eco plot in a few years Smile)

although, saying that,we had to turn down skyes nursery place todaySad
they'd only do 3 afternoons as a minimum and at £25 per session,(nearly £300 per month!)its a bit much for us.im so gutted.

beaditAli · 01/02/2011 22:48

EcoSlingPrincess ???

comixminx · 01/02/2011 23:03

cinnamon thanks for the input - I will certainly come back with questions if I have 'em after visiting some folks. Not quite sure how soon I'll be able to make it over to see someone but I do want to get the ball rolling soon.

For all those who don't want to go back to work full-time or at all - big commiserations! I know I'm very lucky because I really like my job and colleagues, and it's flexible and stuff. I suppose you can go a certain way down the track of downsizing but depending on your family circumstances there's only so far you can go - probably. Mammy I second everyone else in saying at least talk to your DH about it - a trouble shared is a trouble halved etc - but also, is there any other advice or information you can get locally that might help you think of other possibilities that you'd never think of by yourself, maybe? Something new you could do? Maybe like cinnamon you could become a childminder - didn't you say you went into that after DC1?

FriggFRIGG · 01/02/2011 23:39

Heloooo,

do you recognise me?!Grin

(i like it bead ,although, ive always liked the name you haveGrin)

cinnamongreyhound · 02/02/2011 01:36

Wow that's a lot!! Here it's £7 per session and people moan!!! That's sad news especially as she's been enjoying it so much clumsymumhappybaby.

Debs75 · 02/02/2011 15:27

MammyG Sorry you are having a hard time atm. If you were me I would ask about flexitime or jobshare. If that's not an option then you and DP need to do a budget together on what you will earn if you are at home and see if you can make savings to allow you to stay at home. Can you get work from home? DP delivers Kleeneze catalogues and is self-employed. He only 'earns' about £50 a week but he gets tax credits to bump it up and our rent is paid. I know you are in Ireland so I assume the tax credit system is different.
My friend had an apnoea alarm fior her dd and it was alwayd going off at odd times, especially when she was wriggly.

I like the IKEA highchair although Lucy is using her bumbo for meals.

newmum001 · 02/02/2011 19:54

Mammy i'm sorry you feel so shit atm. Just gonna echo what everyone else has said really and talk to your DP. It might not make a blind bit of difference as i know you've said before you need to work and the job sitiuation in Ireland is really bad atm but if nothing else at least he'll know how bad your feeling atm and you'll get some much needed support and a shoulder to cry on.

I've got a meeting at work myself on Friday about possibly going part time and i must admit i'm really worried in case they say no. We'll see what happens though. DP is coming with me and he'll just wait downstairs for me while in my meeting. Means im finally getting to show Grace off to the people at work. I haven't managed to get in there with her yet as it's a pain in the arse getting there on my own.

SeaChelles · 02/02/2011 20:44

VERY quiet on the western front today ladies...?!

JessemyParkson · 02/02/2011 20:49

Cor, just been trying to catch up.

And I honestly can't think of what to say! Mind's gone blank - :o

Ok, weaning-brainstorm-question thingy,

I bought a butternut squash today, and am keen to try Mary with it, but I haven't got the foggiest clue what to do with it!

Do I peel it? And do I boil/steam/roast it?

JessemyParkson · 02/02/2011 20:50

One of these days I will remember!

Mary 18w+1

PS, no sign of a period here either yet. But not horrendously bothered, as I'd like another LO :o

lumpybananapuree · 02/02/2011 20:57

I'm here chelle suprise suprise!

Jessemy Yes peel it then I just boul or steam it. Its pretty easy to do!

SeaChelles · 02/02/2011 21:08

You can roast butternut squash to - like a parsnip i thinks jessemy

ah my lumpylittlebanana.......haha. Or not so lumpy now with your jazzy handblender! Am thinking of trying pea mixed with mashed potato tomorrow - what ya reckon? green puke....hmmm..... Hmm

lumpybananapuree · 02/02/2011 21:15

SeaChelles · 02/02/2011 21:17

I did give him cauliflower on its own yesterday and you should have seen his face - he was disgusted! I did get it on video but its a bit shaky! lol

lumpybananapuree · 02/02/2011 21:20

Ha ha! poor wee man!!

newmum001 · 02/02/2011 21:25

Bloody hell is everyone making their own purees?? I'm gonna have to pull mu finger out and get pureeing as well, we're still on porridge here but to be fair i did say i was going to take it slowly Grin Also dp's mum said carrot gives then the runs? Anyone experienced this?? Grace is still WIDE awake and i'm starting to think she's never going to go to bed tonight. I'm friggin knackered!!

saoirse86 · 02/02/2011 21:30

Hi ladies. I haven't been on here for a few days and it's gone mad!

I haven't started weaning Orlaith yet, I don't think I will be for a while. She's showing no interest and isn't drinking enough. I'd much rather she drank more rather than giving her solids instead.

We had a dentist come to our postnatal group on monday and she was talking about the dangers of baby food from supermarkets. She showed us how much sugar is in them and it actually made me feel ill! I was looking in sainsburys today and it's unbelievable how much rubbish is in them. I've told DP he'll have to do all her food as well as mine! Grin

Orlaith 18+5

lumpybananapuree · 02/02/2011 21:40

Supermarket foods are ok but I prefer to do my own cos I know exactly whats in them & now i've got my super duper blender its great!

Saoirse why do you say she's not drinking enough? Is she settled in between feeds??

cinnamongreyhound · 02/02/2011 21:52

I have never heard that before newmum001, carrot was the first thing I gave ds1.

I think you just have to check before you give it to them saoirse86, some stuff is fine. I also just prefer to do it myself, partly because I know what they're having and because the jars a very bland and super smooth both of which can cause problems with eating later on. Making my own worked great with ds1 so don't want to jinx it this time!

Went to bed at 9 but Luke is up for milk now, hate waking up after less than an hour and I can hear dh snoring Envy

Getting Luke weighed tomorrow what was Jack today beaditAli?

mapletrees · 02/02/2011 21:53

How many of us still haven't started weaning? Anyone other than me and Saoirse? I was going to wait until 6 months but I just read an article in the BMJ which has made me have a bit of a rethink (it was basically saying that the evidence for waiting is a bit shakey, and there might actually be risks if you wait, more studies needed etc etc, which I'm sure you've all already thought about...)

What interesting foods have any of you given your LOs? I'm seriously tempted to find something bit random to start him out on (just like to be a bit different), but obviously it needs to be something easy for him to digest..

Also, still no period here.. There is one benefit to him still feeding though the night then Grin

Louis, 5 months yesterday!!

comixminx · 02/02/2011 22:00

maple, me, I've not started weaning Aphra yet.

That BMJ article wasn't the one that had everyone up in arms was it? If so, there were some good follow-ups here.

I've still not got a period yet either. Not missing it! I have had some spots and other things that might indicate some hormonal fluctuations but no actual period.

Aphra 5 calendar months today!

mapletrees · 02/02/2011 22:23

comix Reading your link, I think it probably was (it was sent to me since all the media storm, and in my sleep-deprived state I didn't make the connection Blush). They take it apart pretty comprehensively don't they. Still, the main thing I took from it was the fact that there haven't been enough proper randomised trials to be really confident of what is best, something I guess cinnamon's EAT study is at least partly hoping to address. I didn't read it as an attack on bfing, but I'll freely admit I'm not nearly as critical as I would usually try to be... Should probably go to bed now - maybe my brain will work better in the morning Grin

JessemyParkson · 02/02/2011 22:52

Right, I'm all pureed out!

I've done a small butternut squash, and half a kilo of parsnips. All suitably squished and now freezing gently. I ran out of icecube trays! I've resorted to tupperware boxes lol I'll try and score the purees so it's easier to get some out, but hey ho.

Tomorrow, bring on the sweet potatoes, and the carrots.

BTW, Aldi have sweet potatoes and butternut squashes in their Super Six this week... 750g of tatties, or a squash for 69p = bargain!

Mary's been a bit uppity tonight. She normally goes down sweet as anything between 6 and 7, and stays out apart from the odd snuffle when we go to bed. But she's woken up twice in the past hour and half, and been really crying, rather than whinging. I think she may be teething again - her gums are very lumpy round the sides, and she really mashes on my finger, poor baby :( Time for calpol and dentinox I think

Dixiebell · 03/02/2011 05:18

I'm not weaning yet either, although ordered the annabel karmel book yesterday, inspired by the talk on here! Actually quite excited, although might wait a bit yet. Arlo's never even had a bottle yet.

4 months tomorrow
