There is a post which gets bumped periodically about how washing things in hot soapy water is all you need to do, no need to sterilise. here you go. The infant feeding coordinator at our hospital told me there's no need to sterilise if you wash everything thoroughly, especially things only used for breastmilk. Apparently in the US they don't sterilise things at all. I certainly wouldn't bother sterilising anything except bottles and teats - it is the milk that's the issue, as it's a perfect breeding ground for bacteria.

CakeandRoses · 12/01/2011 22:13

v nice highchair needle

never heard that re diabetes and formula before but have just googled and found the study which is not v conclusive. It's a 2% increase and the sample size is only 230 Hmm

but tbh it sounds as tho your best bet (if you'd prefer to bf til 12 m) would be to ttc whilst bf til 12m then stop and put G onto cow's milk.

Woodlands · 12/01/2011 22:14

i enjoyed my trip to the hospital to talk to the pregnant ladies about bfing - was nice to see the infant feeding coordinator and show off 6-month-old James!

needle I put Dylan into cows milk at 10months on the hv's advice. As I've said previously I felt really panicky about feeding him myself while taking ad and we tried for weeks to get him to take formula (every brand imaginable) he would take water out of a cup so in the end the hv said to start him early on cows milk.

It was horrible and I felt like the worlds worst mummy for doing it. Another thing to beat myself up about at the time Sad if we could if gotten him to take formula we would of in a heartbeat if Gwen will take formula for you then you are in such a good position to stop bf Smile

This is why I an panicking so much about going to work and leaving bethan when we can't get her to take formula or anything other then fresh ebm Sad

Obviously I put him on to cows milk not in to Grin

CakeandRoses · 12/01/2011 22:26

wss is this true?

KiwiKate Thu 14-Jul-05 11:51:40
Here in New Zealand we are recommended to sterilise up to 3 months only (from woodlands link below)

dylthan could you try mixing fresh ebm with freezer bm or formula at decreasing quanties

Dylthan · 12/01/2011 22:32

That's a great idea cakes I was so focused on the fact that she just had to take it that I've been compleatly stumped about how to go about it. I'll have to give it ago thank you Grin

Fingers crossed it works

CakeandRoses · 12/01/2011 22:41

happy to help dylthan Smile i reckon it should work if you start off with a small amount of the disliked milk, say 9/10 fresh ebm to 1/10 freezer ebm or formula

MelissaM · 12/01/2011 23:19

Tsc glad f home. Hope he's doing ok.

Think it is fairly recently that advice changed to not giving cows milk until 1 year. Used to be 6 months. Not sure when or why it changed.

L not happy. Keeps crying in his sleep, and keeping me awake, hence being on mn.

Wonder jabs due btwn 3 and 5 yrs. Do them here around 3 1/2 so if similar up the road where u r, shld be fairly soon for ur dd. E cried lots but she was really tired & was already worked up because she didn't want them.

Suppose I ought to try to get some sleep while I can. hope u all have a good night.

MelissaM · 12/01/2011 23:24

Or maybe not, L crying again and sounds like he's actually awake now :-(

Dylthan remembered that tried posting comment re happiest earlier. I find washabales leak less than disposable. Seem to remember with E that it was really just an issue when started sitting and before established on solids.

Night all x (he's still just crying in his sleep poor little man )

Cake re "KiwiKate Thu 14-Jul-05 11:51:40

Umm..can't actually remember Blush, G is not having bottles as she won't drink from them and I think with A I stopped sterilising at about 4 or 5 months - once they are lying on the floor and putting random toys/books/etc in their mouths I don't think I carried on sterilising - just washed bottles/plates/spoons etc in hot soapy water.

When I saw the thing about sterilising to a year I did think that it sounded different from the advice I'd had here.

Yep, just checked my baby book from Plunket (our equivalentof hvs) and it says, I quote, "When baby is over 3 months, equipment does not need to be sterilised, just cleaned
thoroughly."

Different rules in different countries. Weird, huh? For the record A has never had a stomach bug at 3 mo, 4 mo or ever so she must have a prety strong constitution!

CakeandRoses · 13/01/2011 00:04

hope your night improves melissa

Cheers wss i'm pretty convinced with the reasoning not to sterilise esp after 3m. think i'll just put the expressing stuff in dishwasher in future but rinse it first make sure there's no milk residue on anything beforehand.

also, interesting what you said about amber necklaces being common there.

mlic Fs nursery have actually commented that he's miles less drooly since wearing the necklace. Initally we used to take it off for nursery but forgot so many times that we just leave it on all the time now - he's so attached to it actually gets annoyed if we do try to take it off Grin.

A's deffo teething but doesn't appear to have suffered anywhere near as much as F did when he was a baby, obv that's not v scientific as she's a different child anyway but i'm not taking the risk and taking her necklace off!

Cows milk should only not be given til a year because its very filling and babies wont take in many nutrients if that is their sole drink.

I only sterilise bottles/expressing equip. I do his spoons if they have been stewing in filth dirty for a while.
I just pout boiling water from the kettle on his dummies.

Bad night here, up at 1,4,5 and more but didnt look at the clock.

I hope hes sleeping better by my wedding, I dont want to bleary eyes on that day!
Def doing sleep training if hes not sleeping through.

Stac2011 · 13/01/2011 09:33

morning all, not bad night here R woke at 1.30 gave dummy, again at 3.30 but was crying so gave quick hug and back to bed, bottle at 5.45 which i gave as i gathered she must be hungry.

Regarding sterilising we were told at the weaning fair to do bottles teats etc until a year, but plates spoons and cups can be washed normally. Also was told from 6mths lo can have water straight from tap. Bottles still have to be made from cooled boiled water.

so good it posted twice, may be the same info already given just wanted to put my bit in lol x

CakeandRoses · 13/01/2011 09:45

morning all,

i surprised myself with that actually mlic Grin the proof will be in the pudding as i need to express soon for my evening course tonight and was already feeling a bit antsy about the thought of not sterilising Blush

I bought her a little set of crockery and cutlery yesterday (altho she and F will probably share his plate and cup mountain i thought she ought to have one set to call her own!) so I might well ask dh to try her with milk from the tommee tippee rather than the bottle. F got on so well with drinking water but not milk from the tommee tippee from 6m so i'm thinking we should try to get her used to both earlier.

Aurelia's been doing her best newborn impression and has literally slept, ate and farted all morning - nothing else. Haven't even changed her night nappy yet as she hasn't given me an opportunity. ah - the lady is now awake and doing her pterodactyl impression instead so better get that bottom changed....

CakeandRoses · 13/01/2011 09:51

one last thing.... those seduced by the emma bridgewater plastic crockery for children. Don't be. F has two sets and they've fared the worst out of all his stuff. The plastic coating just peels off. Also out of all his cutlery the only fork which has snapped in half was an emma bridgewater one.

I love love love her proper stuff, just not the plastic stuff now.

kkfairybrains · 13/01/2011 10:22

That's really interesting about the sterilising. It makes sense really. But i still just don't trust myself to wash them properly and risk giving her an upset tummy so will continue to sterilise for a while. Its handy to just bung them all into the steriliser every evening after washing them so i dont mind. I haven't sterilised dummy's for a long time though as i believe they need to be exposef to some germs to build up their immune system.
Had the best night in ages last night. We've been doing the bath routine the last 3 nights and she's been in bed between 8 and 9. last night she was asleep by 8, stirred when we were going to bed but just popped dummy back in and straight to sleep then only 1 more dummy wake during the night and the 2 of us woke at half 9!!"i can't believe it. Long may it last!! i feel normal today. E was 6 months old yesterday. Really can't believe it. It's just gone by so fast. And in the same time again she'll be 1. scary!

Happy 6 month birthday Ellie!

sounds like a brill night kk. hope it continues for you.

Funnily enough, dummies are the one thing I'll always put in boiling water as the thought of germs being on them really grosses me out. It's not really logical given everything else that they put in their mouths, but dummies... ew! I end up doing clownish contortions to stop her dummy touching anything and it gets embarrassing when i'm basically groping someone else as they're holding her at the time! It's one of the reasons I'm hoping to get rid of A's soonish.
