Spot: the steroids will def help, I've been on short courses when my asthma has flared up and you really notice the difference. I don't take them daily as it tends to be triggered by viral infections for me. I had to give DS1 his inhaler the other day cos he was wheezy (post viral cough) - do you have a blue inhaler as well as the steroids? Please don't feel guilty about not taking him to the doc, we have it drummed into us not to waste time on the nhs. Either things are fine abd we feel guilty about taking up a slot or they're not abd we feel guilty about not taking them sooner. I tend to fall into the latter category.

Nolda · 28/10/2010 10:46

Spot - just to chuck in my 1p's worth, when DS was underweight I gave him Jersey cow's milk as it has a higher fat content (he wouldn't drink formula - tricky little monkey!). Don't worry about the steroids, as others have said it is only a short course, which will sort him out quickly. I have given DD steroid cream for her eczema when it has been really bad.

MomOrMum · 28/10/2010 11:43

I haven't had to give DS steroids, but I've had them twice since having him and both times I was breastfeeding. Nay ideal, but they make such a difference for me and it is such a relief to not be gasping for breath. I hope little T finds the same. They normally start to work for me within 24 hours or so and massive improvement within a couple of days.

You may well already have one, but I bought a warm mist humidifier yesterday because DS has been cough cough coughing all night and it seemed to make such a difference! I wish I had had it a couple of weeks ago when I was ill. The air in his room was like a tropical rainforest. You have to be very careful because they obviously get quite hot, but if your DS is still in a cot and couldn't get to it to touch it in the night, it could be worth a try.

I keep meaning to describe the TMI disgusting story my childminder greeted me with the other day when I collected DS. During naptime he decided to take his nappy off and proceed to wee and poo all over the cot and then roll around in it....WTF??? If he had done that at home I think I might have closed the door and walked out. We have taken swift action by making sure he is wearing a vest with poppers each day and wearing a gro-bag for naps at nursery (he always has one at home, which may be why I've been spared this joy). Also have ordered a potty to see if maybe this is his way of saying he's ready to use one?? Ugh, ugh, ugh.

MomOrMum · 28/10/2010 13:01

Did I break the thread with my GROSS story? He's the only toddler to do this in history, isn't he? Shock

waitinggirl · 28/10/2010 13:08

i don't know about anyone else, mom, but that is so disgusting i may not be able to associate with you anymore. i will take my woes to other threads Wink

i am measuring big for dates so have to ask for a gestational diabetes test. others have had this, haven't they? is it vile?

OP posts:
DeidreBarlow · 28/10/2010 13:17

mom that is foul . However, I do believe that other toddlers may have attempted similar...my own DS has stuck his fingers in his nappy and tasted its contents! I think a couple of threads ago we tried to really gross each other outGrin

wg No idea on the test, how are you feeling?

Beans33 · 28/10/2010 13:44

Minging! Nearly regurgitated my toast!
Am doing my run this evening. Am sort of hoping it'll rain so DH doesn't bring the girls! Is it just me or does anyone else find that Nom advert disgusting?
Also, who went out in Apprentice last night?

SummerLightning · 28/10/2010 13:53

Good luck beans but please don't spill about apprentice anyone as I haven't seen it yet

SummerLightning · 28/10/2010 13:54

Oh and so gross about the poo!!!!

Veggiemummy · 28/10/2010 13:58

Mom I have a grosser story but don't want to steal your thunder. Actually I didn't think your story was that bad, but then I'm a kids nurse gross stories and experiences are part of the job description.

DS2 just had his 2nd hep B jab. We have been setting him up for it all week giving his toys injections and we were doing really well he was standing confidently waiting his turn. Unfortunately we were second in line, (bloody Dutch and their non queuing ways we were first but as I was getting his paperwork together the next parent in line pushed in) DS1 heard a scream from the clinic room and freaked out. I literally had to drag him in while he tried to sink his fingernails into the door frame. I went into nurse mode and assumed the injection position, discovered he is quite strong but thanks to some muscular nurses we got it in. After he calmed down he told me it didn't hurt at all. I'm considering not telling him next time and just taking him in. Although he was pretty good in the end and is completely fine about it now and talking about it

SummerLightning · 28/10/2010 14:02

Very disappointed with injection story veggie as misread your post and was expecting a gross story!'

LadyThompson · 28/10/2010 14:03

EEk, I haven't seen last night's Apprentice yet, I am watching it tonight so will have to avoid the thread for the rest of the day as I don't want to know who was fired before I watch! Grin DP was doing trial prep and I enjoyed having the telly off, thinking it was Tuesday and I wasn't missing anything - doh!

Crikey Mom, that would have been a serious downer to clear up...Hopefully it wasn't an enjoyable experience for him and so he feel inclined to do it again!

WG - it's just a sugary drink and fasting beforehand and a couple of blood tests - 'tis nothing to dread, honest.

Can't type much as I am holding DD2. Really busy couple of days - but nothing exciting, just behind with chores...More tomorrow.

EffiePerine · 28/10/2010 14:10

WG: the GTT is fine, but if you can, do it at the surgery so you can go home after the sugary drink. Otherwise you're waiting at the hosp for a few hours till they can do the blood test. I've heard that some people feel sick after drinking the sugary stuff (you fast beforehand) but I was fine.

Beans33 · 28/10/2010 16:34

Have put DH off bringing the girls to watch me run. I feel really bad as know he wanted to, but I know I'd just spend the whole race worrying about them if they were too cold or wet or whatever. And they'd probably love it! Well, DD1 would anyway. DD2 might not so much! Now feeling really bad and maybe should just let them come along. Oh bugger. Could have done without all this.

EffiePerine · 28/10/2010 17:49

When's the race, Beans? Is it tonight?

waitinggirl · 28/10/2010 18:43

can i ask your advice on whether we should take madam to a firework display? will it scare the pants off her? i want her to love them, not be scared of them

SummerLightning · 28/10/2010 19:05

Gah talking of all the food issues on here, I just put DS to bed with literally no tea.
He has recently decided he likes fishfingers and chips (not v healthy i know) so i cooked that plus some veg for an easy life as dd having screamathon. he threw it onm the floor and screamed for banana and yoghurt. so i get him out of the high chair and hr screams and climbs back in. Refuses tea. Repeat. Both screaming. Sigh, put him to bed with just milk. Cutting off nose to spite face as he will definitely wake in the night now. And i am knackered. I was just fed up of being screamed at and being subjected to the whims of a toddler. Hes still awake whinging upstairs. grrrrrrr. i should've just given him the banana and yoghurt shouldn't i?

SummerLightning · 28/10/2010 19:10

oh wg i don't know. i was always petrified of fireworks as a kid. Don't think it was caused by being subjected to them to early though. I would take her but leave if she doesn't like I think, if she's not the type to be scared of things like that. DS is not scared of many things, but thinking of it he doesn't like the vaccuum cleaner or lawnmower, so maybe he would be scared. I haven't thought about whether we will go yet.

SummerLightning · 28/10/2010 19:15

That should be "too early".

Oh and spot yes DS does wake in the night if he is hungry, and he asks for milk. Doesnt' happen often though, and everytime we have had a run of it and we say he's getting into a habit and we have to knock it on the head, he just stops. Oh and usually he goes back to sleep straight after the milk. I would have thought leaving a cup in the cot would be fine overnight. In fact I think zoe said she did it ages ago?

DeidreBarlow · 28/10/2010 19:15

summer Love I have done the exact same thing. Half the time I give in the other half I think 'no I'm in bloody charge here'. How's that for consistent parenting! He might not wake in the night, DS doesn't usually.

wg No idea on Fireworks. We want to go to our local display (for DD mainly), DS hates buggy but no way he can be loose in a crowd and he doesn't tolerate his reins or hand holding. I think madamn would be okay with the noise but then who knows! DD went from hating them at Bonfire Night to adoring them by New Years last yearConfused

DeidreBarlow · 28/10/2010 19:18

Mum just rang my Grandad almost died this aftSad. She rang her bro & sis to come and then the consultant gave him some massive dose of steroids or something and by the time they arrived he wanted to know where his humbugs where! I think the drugs are prolonging the inevitable but I just love his fight Smile

Veggiemummy · 28/10/2010 19:34

Sorry to disappoint Lighitst but I can't tell the story now as people will be eating.

DB your grandad is a fighter.

SummerLightning · 28/10/2010 19:35

Go your grandad Deirdre but sorry he is so sick

Veggiemummy · 28/10/2010 19:39

It's goes without saying that I'm thinking of your GF at this time but I'm also thinking of you. This uncertainty is really hard. It puts a dark spot on anything good going on in your life at the moment. I remember when my Nan was in ICU, and we knew it wasn't good. It was also just when I was having my work Christmas party that I had organised at a karaoke Chinese restaurant. It was so hard to get into the fun knowing what was playing out back home. Thinking of you lovely DB.

Rubena · 28/10/2010 19:59

So sorry to hear that about your GD Deids Sad - yes he does sound like a fighter

Summer, I've had probs with ds eating much while he's been ill. But he's slowly feeling better and he wouldn't go near his highchair tonight unless yogurt was mentioned, but I got him to eat some fish pie by by letting him have a spoonful while he was playing in the living room [bad I know] then he thought "oh that's not bad" and agreed to get in the highchair because he wanted more and he ended up finishing it. But it's all mind games with him.

He's still coughing and teething bad and I'm still coughing my lungs up, but still drinking wine [own worst enemy]Hmm
