Alwayshopeful i have to go to a wedding next weekend when James will be 4 weeks old. I have no idea what to wear but as I only have 1 dress I can get into I suppose it will have to be that - black! No idea whether I can easily bf in it though so will do trial run later. It is quite stretchy... Not relishing the whole idea tbh especially as oh yes, I'll be driving there and back seeing as I can't really drink much anyway Although I did enjoy a glass of beautifully chilled Chablis last night - thank you csws!!

LaTrucha · 18/07/2010 12:35

I wore this to a wedding after DD was born. I thought it was quite flattering to post-pregnancy tum. It's a very dark blue but simple so you can wear some good jewellry.

Nice ones here too. They're a nice company, too. Be warned tough: extra large is a 14-16

goodname · 19/07/2010 10:42

Elena I know exactly how you feel, its such a shock to the system, amazing though isnt it? I read every book imaginable and had ideas of this perfect three hour routine. HA HA its nothing like the books at all. It gets more amazing as the weeks go by esp when he smiles He is sitting here on me grinning as he fills his nappy just now.

Greensnail I have had similar snotty problems with Fergus. This weekend, he was so full of mucous he choked and stopped breathing several times during the night on Friday (just for seconds). Cue us as first time parents anxiously phoning NHS 24 and taking him to doctors only to be told there is nothing we can do just sit him up and pat his back as we were doing. Its rubbish how little they can do to help babies til they are 3 months old. So he sicked up a lot of it on sat night after screaming for 3 hours and then was a bit better, still a bit bunged up though and def not feeding as well. Last night he decided as his mucous was better he would sick up half his milk at every feed so he had 4 changes of clothes last night. Think i have had about 5 hours sleep in total over the last three nights!

dresses for weddings I went to a wedding when Fergus was 2 weeks old and i wore a maxi dress. Loads in the shops and you can get them with strechty top bits over yr boobs and lots come with detachable straps which makes feeding easy. Also the cover up flabby belly very well indeed. Much cheaper than buying feeding dress. Only prob is having to wear v high heels as i am not quite tall enough for them.
CSWS I too was wondering where everyone was, had to join facebook so i had something to read/write while feeding. Nice to hear from everyone again. meggymegs not heard from you for a while and you used to be on a lot. Is everything going ok for you?

greensnail · 19/07/2010 14:50

goodname Hope he's over the worst of his snottyness now but the best thing I would recommend for snotty babies is a snot-sucker like this one you can get them from boots and waitrose and i'm sure other places too. You can also get saline nose drops to help clear it as well - these just just make it runnier so its easy to drain away or suck away with the snot sucker.

Also keep him upright as much as possible (alice is currently spending the nights in her rocker as she can't tolerate lying flat.

Bringing the baby into the bathroom when you're in the shower can help too as the humidity helps to clear them a bit. We even treated dd1 to a trip to "the living rainforest" at the weekend as we thought the humidity there would help Alice

DD1 was full of snot continuously from 8 weeks until about 6 months so I'm just hoping Alice will clear it a bit quicker than she did!

GibberingGinger · 19/07/2010 22:45

Hope everyone is ok and getting enough sleep. Things here are going ok. James has his repeat hearing test today. He failed both the newborn ones he had in hospital, so had to be recalled to the audiology unit for a more thorough test. He passed on one ear but is hard of hearing in the other ear. They will monitor it and see if it improves as he grows over the next few years. It's probably linked to his cleft palate. Have appointment for that at the children's hospital in Edinburgh on Thursday.

Have no weddings to go to this summer, so can;t help with the outfit dilemas, but almost wish I did have an occasion to aim for cause at the moment my eating is out of control. An awful lot of biscuit consumption is not helping the baby weight!

OneBabyPlease · 19/07/2010 22:50

Hi ladies - would you mind if I join you? I'm not on your list but I lurked on your original pre-natal thread but was too nervous to join after 3 miscarriages, 4.5 years trying to conceive & being diagnosed with a blood clotting disorder - I never actually believed DS1 would arrive safely until he was delivered by elective c-sec on 11th June. He's called Emin & is GORGEOUS!

I should change my MN name now I've got my wish I guess but I'm just too tired to contemplate it!

Could just do with a bit of handholding as a new mum & I'm enjoying reading everyone's experiences bfing, lack of sleep etc - it's so good to know I'm not alone!

OMG - how on earth are the girls with twins coping?! RESPECT!
Bloody hard work this parenting lark, isn't it?! Just so grateful to have DS1 finally here though!

AlwaysHopeful · 20/07/2010 07:58

Goodname I have ordered two dresses off the web, so hopefully one of them will do the trick. Will let you know how I get on.

GG the deadline is certainly helping the eating situation, although George is feeding so much, the weight is dropping off with not a lot of effort on my part - I'm only 3lb off my pre-preggers weight, but I'm nowhere near the same shape!

OneBaby welcome to our thread and CONGRATULATIONS. Well done for persevering through all that hardship in getting little Emin into the world. AlwaysHopeful is my TTC name too, but I think it works quite well for every aspect of parenthood, so I'll stick with it!

Yes, being a mum is tough, but it's the best thing in the world. Lean on whoever you can for support during these first few weeks.

greensnail · 20/07/2010 11:09

Welcome onebaby and congratulations on the birth of Emin

MrsDmamee · 20/07/2010 11:27

Hi All and new babies! and new thread!!

Havent had much chance to be online lately.

The past 3 weeks have been tough DD is a very clingy baby and a light sleeper. Its been hard to predict what she will do from one hour to the next.

DH is back at work, nights for a month which im finding tough being alone at nightime.

DS2 is taking to baby ok, he does get a bit fed up i cant put her down to help him build lego.

Summerhols · 20/07/2010 11:43

Hi Ladies, just wanted to say that though I've not posted I am lurking and enjoying reading all that people have to say (often at some horrific hour in the night).

Like other first timers have said I'm finding that this motherhood job is turing out to br a bit tough. Finding BF really difficult - mastitus, followed by thrush and now my temp has gone back up so possiibly mastitus again . I've had to call the grandmother help in again as feeling rotten.

But I love my DD to bits so it makes up for it all. She is just sooooooo cute, don't want these early weeks to go too quickly however difficult they are.

Sorry not replying to what others have said, but I love reading about others experiences.

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/07/2010 12:56

Just saying a v quick one handed hello. Dh abroad this week for 3 days, so looking after all 3 dc on my own, which is hard work!

CantSleepWontSleep · 20/07/2010 16:23

Has anyone got any tips for getting the baby to distinguish between day and night? Jeremy has been asleep barring an odd milky snack here and there since 9am this morning, but spends around 1.5hrs awake in the middle of the night.
Dd didn't sleep night or day for months, and ds1 seemed to sort himself out pretty quickly without us having to do anything, so not sure what tricks we can employ with ds2.
Or are you all finding that your babies are extra sleepy in the daytime with this heat?

OP posts:
JoKettle · 20/07/2010 17:16

csws 1st timer here so making it up as I go, but I've been waking James for daytime feeds if he's gone more than 3-3.5 hours since the last one, the idea being that he won't need so much overnight if he's fed regularly during the day. So far it's working ok as he fed at 1.30am and 5am last night & quickly settled back to sleep. Good luck flying solo with your dc!

NizzyNoodles · 20/07/2010 17:57

CSWS I've got a sleepy one today too. He wouldn't settle this morning but seems to have been asleep pretty much since 11.30 and only vaguely awake for feeds. I've now got him stripped down to his vest and will have to try and get him really awake for his next feed. The only thing I do re the day and night thing is make sure I change him out of pyjamas into "proper" clothes in the morning and keep it dark at night when he feeds.

Fingers crossed they sleep tonight and they've just had a sleepy day!

greensnail · 20/07/2010 21:29

CSWS - we've had a sleepy day here too followed by a very grumpy early evening following Alice's first injections. Quite disapointing as DD1 was with her grandparents today so I was hoping to take the opportunity to make sure Alice got plenty of feeds in during the day to help with her nights but she was having none of it.

DD1 was really bad for having day and night round the wrong way. She would sleep all day and then wake up at 9pm. I became quite strict about not interacting with her at that time (she was happy to just lie in her moses basket if i ignored her) and she did eventually get the message.

Hope you're feeling better soon summerhols sounds like you're having a really hard time.

justbeme · 20/07/2010 23:10

Hi all - just bookmarking as had no internet for nearly 3 weeks -
Many congratulations to everyone -
Registered my little mans birth today (born 11/6) - finally named him Adam!!
May take me a while to catch up!!

MrsAlwaysRight · 20/07/2010 23:10

Another sleepy one here! Alice has been asleep for most of the day. Tonight she has been asleep since about 7.30pm - had I known she was going to sleep for so long this evening I'd have gone to bed too!

OneBabyPlease · 20/07/2010 23:57

I am SO pleased it's not just me who seems to have a baby who is sleeping all day & waking for long periods in the night! Wish I had some advice to offer but I don't - just glad I'm not in this boat alone!

Justbeme Congratulations - a great day to have a baby - my son Emin was born 11/06/10 too!

I'm finding I'm coping well (first baby) but have a bit of a fear of going out on my own with him - anyone else experienced this or am I wierd?! I find myself worrying everyone is thinking I'm a bad parent if he's screaming when we're out & cope with it ok if I'm with DH or friends but I'm terrified of getting all embarrassed/stressed out on my own. Any tips/similar experiences? I guess I just need to bite the bullet & push myself to do it more.

Barbeasty · 21/07/2010 12:17

OneBabyPlease- Are there any groups near you like a brestfeeding support group or an NCT Bumpos & Babes coffee morning? They would be a good start for going out on your own with a baby, as everybody there has/ will have a baby and know exactly what you're going through. Then you can build up to other things.

NizzyNoodles · 21/07/2010 12:41

Quick post as Sam has finally regained the weight he lost and is now 11 lbs!! We've now been signed off by the midwife - it only took us 4 weeks!

csws and mrsalwaysright how did your nights go? Ours was the same as usual so maybe it was just a sleepy day yesterday? So far we're not into sleeping today so I'm off out for a bit of a walk to see if that will help him drop off

Onebabyplease I remember feeling the same with DD1 and eventually I just did it and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I also realised that usually when you're out and about people are either too caught up in their own things to worry about you or they are really helpful/sympathetic. Let us know how you get on. Barbeasty's suggestion is a good one - the mums and babies group was one of the first places I went on my own.

Elena67 · 21/07/2010 13:09

Hi
has anyone else experienced a day when their baby fed so much that both boobs ran out? He has had a good go in the past but last night started eating at 6pm and, apart from a short nap, didn't stop trying to feed until gone midnight - for a lot of that time crying inconsolably as there was no milk. A bit gradually came back in and he grabbed enough to get to sleep (which lasted 5.5 hours, which was bliss!). Just worrying in case I'm running out of milk...

MrsAlwaysRight · 21/07/2010 15:00

Woke Alice at about midnight to feed her then it took until 2.15am to settle her. She woke up again at 5 to feed and again at 7. In between that had to get up twice with DD1, so very tired today!

She has slept a lot of today as well, just hoping tonight will be better!!

By 6 weeks DD1 slept 11pm - 6am ish, so hoping DD2 will be similar

MrsAlwaysRight · 21/07/2010 15:03

OneBabyPlease try not to worry too much about what other people will think. I felt exactly the same with DD1 and remember dreading going to my first baby group. I was convinced DD1 would scream all the way through - which she did! But she wasn't the only screaming baby and you will find most other mums will be sympathetic as they will have been in the same boat as you at some point. HTH

CantSleepWontSleep · 21/07/2010 15:05

Thanks for suggestions Jo and Nizzy - we are doing all of that already. In fact am lol a bit at the idea of ds trying to go more than 3 hours between feeds - am lucky if he goes half of that!!
Happily I can report that our night was no worse than usual. In fact we didn't have such a long stint awake in the middle, so if anything it was better. And today he's had a couple of stints of being awake for a couple of hours, so maybe we're getting closer to something sensible .

onebaby - i meant to say welcome yesterday, sorry. I understand what it must mean to you to have Emin, as it took us 5 years to produce dd (our first). We have 3 now though, so you might want to change your name to ThreeBabiesPlease!!
I'd second barbeasty's suggestion to get to some baby groups. Whereabouts in the country are you?

elena - it was probably a growth spurt. iirc there's commonly one around 3 weeks. Breasts don't actually run out of milk, clever things that they are, although I appreciate that it can feel like that sometimes, particularly in the evenings. I remember dd feeding for 7 hours once during one of her early growth spurts, and I was none too impressed at the time! You just need to have faith in your body, and remember that he is only feeding that much to build up your supply to match his needs .

Yay for the weight gain Nizzy. I suspect that my ds will overtake yours soon if past performance is any predictor of future! He was close to 10lbs when the hv came out on Friday (I don't know the exact weight, because she forget to write it in the book ). I don't expect he'll get weighed again for a long time now though, as I have better things to do with my time than spend it down at the surgery. Although actually with toddler group not running over the summer I may manage to pop down once, if I can time it right (clinic is only on for 1 hour twice a month). Would be nice to hopefully see my old hv and have a catch up with her.

Right, had better go and see if I can get J to feed for a few mins before we go out to pick up dd. And then wake ds1 too. I fear that I am about to have a mad 15 minutes!

OP posts:
greensnail · 21/07/2010 15:38

Elena - Alice also had a massive growth spurt at 3 weeks, and fed just like you've described. I know it feels like you're running out of milk, but you honestly never completely run out. I think it was LaT who said a while back that they're like a river not a bucket! Its bloody hard work, but you're doing exactly the right thing to ensure that you build up a good supply.

We had an ok night after Alice's sleepy day and injections yesterday. She's been very wakeful this morning but both girls are asleep now which is wonderful

onebaby I agree with what everyone else has said about getting out. I used to go to a few different baby groups when DD1 was new and made some good friends there. Everyone's in the same position so no one will care if your baby is crying and you might pick up some good tips from the other mums. I also used to enjoy just pottering around town with her - much harder to do with a toddler in tow so make the most of it now. Its worth remembering that your baby's cries won't sound as bad to other people as they do to you anyway, as they're programmed to affect you.
