Sorry, I meant on the PR/BNP thread. To state that PR would result in BNP getting seats is just sabre rattling against electoral reform. No substance, no argumentation just state a fact in the OP and run.

Single transferrable veg ... is Osborne married? Can we send him to Siberia?

policywonk · 11/05/2010 22:53

Hmm Newsnight - why have they sawn the legs off Evan Harris's chair?

Agree it's odd Clegg doesn't have his own dept. As someone said earlier, Deputy PMs never do anything of note unless it's punching people.

policywonk · 11/05/2010 22:55

Argh Avocadoes I DID confuse auberginesrus with you the other day. She was bemused WHat's your opinion of all this then?

nearlytoolate · 11/05/2010 22:55

Mr justa - way too charitable. I've seen no evidence that the LibDems have any really serious policies or approaches about HOW to get more women/ethnic minorities etc into positions of power. I can hardly recall them even discussing it. Equality isn't really that big a deal to them - that's why they are liberals and not socialists.

I'll be interested to see how many women ministers there are outside of cabinet. At the very least they can try to develop a mix ...

BeenBeta · 11/05/2010 22:55

The things I am hearing like the Freedom Bill to repeal all the attacks on civil liberties is very welcome and I hope Lib Dem and Labour voters will supoort that.

Hope Vince Cable gets/takes a prominent post too.

Well its been a pleasure to join the thread for the evening. Good night all.

Avocadoes · 11/05/2010 22:57

Boulton just said the 5 lib dem posts will be clegg, laws, huhne, Alexander and cable. So no women. I will be furious if no women are in cabinet. Theresa May must get work and pensions.

Aubergines are my fav veg too but I like to rotate my vegtable titles.

MrJustAbout · 11/05/2010 22:57

There weren't that many female heads of the Kremlin - I think you've got a different defniition of "liberal" than the one I recognise (which is broader than the definition of a party).

Agreed - unfortunately, I think it's more that no one will bother to read it but that the markets(!) mostly need to know who's where.

policywonk · 11/05/2010 23:05

Fixed terms - good thing because they reduce the power of the incumbent, prevent electoral manipulation, mean that all parties are working to the same timetable.

Could get messy in a parliamentary system though. I guess if the ruling party loses a VONC, the opposition has to try to cobble a minority gvt together? Dunno how it would work. There would have to be legislation to outline what's going to happen.

I think they just said that the parliament will be fixed unless there is a vote if no confidence. Such a vote wld trigger an election. In which case I think this us a great move. Politicians shouldn't be able to fix election dates in such a way as to influence the result.

TDiddy · 11/05/2010 23:09

I think that this is the best result for Labour. let the Tories and Libs get into inevitable twist. Only danger that I see is that Dave Cameron is very much on the Liberal side of the Tories. If he the Tories dont resist him he could have two full terms. However, the men in pin stripes are more likely to win and wait to strike.

Don't think they forgave him for the expense clear out and they think of him as a whet.

Good speeches from GB and DC especially DC tonight.

Beachcomber · 11/05/2010 23:09

Polly being most indignant about Reid, Blunkett, etc party poopers on Newsnight.

Heathcliffscathy · 11/05/2010 23:09

TDiddy · 11/05/2010 23:11

Labour MUST carefully select new leader. Unfortunately needs TV appeal as well as substance.

Heathcliffscathy · 11/05/2010 23:12

cameron is viewed as total softie leftie in tory grandee circles.

I want all centre/centreleft/left parties in this country.

huzzah.

animula · 11/05/2010 23:14

Yes, Michael Crick was sweetly and anachronistically not "TV age" - as he reported his tuppence on it. Unwitting irony there.
