I don't think labour were interested in talking to the LD's actually.

Right from the start there were labour biggies making signals that they weren't impressed.

I think they put up a front not to look rude, but were actually ready for opposition, and felt that a cobbled together, creaking coalition was unworkable, and ripe for constant sniping and blackmail.

IMHO.

Hassled · 11/05/2010 21:52

Nooo - Hague doesn't suit power. He's only witty and erudite when he's back-pedalling.

Interesting question re cabinet and I'm slightly cheered by the Diane Abbott point that this will make Parliament actually matter.

Come on Libs - I need to know the score. What's occurring?

MarionCole · 11/05/2010 21:52

I come back from pilates and you've all fallen out. Don't fall out please.

I am still hopeful that this will all fall apart. There is talk on R4 that the leadership contenders were against a liblab pact. Makes sense really - it was likely to fail, so who with any ambition would want to preside over a failing government that was the scourge of the tory press. Far better to regroup and move forward.

But I still feel sad.

TheStraitsofWTF · 11/05/2010 21:53

It was Laura K on bbc a while ago saying - I think - that LD were surprised by hostility/frostiness of some labour people. Did anyone else see that?

Quattrocento · 11/05/2010 21:54

Does Gideon know where the economy is, though?

Perhaps he has a good sat nav that will help him

leningrad - on other thread you said 'most of us don't live in areas where it makes a difference' or something like it - where what makes a difference to what?

I have to say, I think we in the NE are toast right now. We vote the same way as Scotland and Wales but we have no devolved powers or special budgetary formula.

Manchester SGM, I find them quite good networking opportunities so tempted!

CatIsSleepy · 11/05/2010 21:57

ah found you

all calm again?

agree labour was not interested enough in forming coalitions and it would have been a rubbish thing to do anyway

bleuuuurgh to george osborne, was hoping we would be spared him at least

but still
this is nowhere near as bad as the tory landslide i was expecting a few weeks or months ago

onebatmother · 11/05/2010 21:57

I've a feeling they're about to chunder all over us

nearlytoolate · 11/05/2010 21:57

HerHonesty · 11/05/2010 21:57

ZephirineDrouhin · 11/05/2010 21:58

Also v anxious about Gideon as chancellor. Word has it Vince Cable will be Chief Secretary to the Treasury though. This all could have been much worse.

AppleTreeWick · 11/05/2010 21:58

Quattro snort poor wee Gideon with his map and driving gloves ever hopeful...I bet Ken Clarke hids it or sends him the wrong way

DavidHameron · 11/05/2010 21:58

BBC are still showing the woman with the thumbs...

Ewe · 11/05/2010 21:59

Interesting article here from liberal conspiracy.

animula · 11/05/2010 21:59

Am soooo fed up about need to get country back on its feet.
It's not the 1970s. the IMF have not been called in. We still have the extremely high credit rating. People aren't rioting in the streets. The "recovery" has started.

Big up how we're in hell, in the handcart and then ta da! take credit when the fact we are not, actually, in hell, in a handcart is put down to the rolled up sleeves of the wax hams.

I do think it's easier not to be stressed about it in Scotland - our schools and NHS less likely to feel much impact of Tory policies per se, though obv we'll have to have cuts as well.

taffetacat · 11/05/2010 22:00

pmsl @ onebat's gap yah link. worringly he looks a bit like Ed Mili

MrJustAbout · 11/05/2010 22:00

I apologise - whilst writing my first reply, I'd not noticed that some of the rhetoric had been pulled back.

I didn't think it was fair to claim that liberal democrats were the party for those who have not the wit to stand by the courage of their convictions (or actually have no convictions in the first place), or that LibDem = ashamed Tory.

I do see now that those had been partially retracted before I posted and so i'd overreacted by the time I posted. However, if the original statements by GetOrf and onebat stood I'd stand by the earlier post.
