I am glad you are here Sophable. I am as thick as two short planks and am learning an awful lot from you all.

We do have differing opinions but I hope that we can all stick on this thread which is proving a bit of a haven for me to be honest.

oooo pie thanks very much Getorf!

allegrageller · 14/05/2010 14:56

LeninGrad- at coming cuts. I know every party would have had to make them, but we know so well that the Tory priorities will be those they perceive as 'spongers'- as Camerwrong made so clear in his speech. I am waiting for the single-parent hate campaign to begin...

allegrageller · 14/05/2010 14:57

oh by the way this clip may cheer up lefties momentarily...it is doing the rounds of facebook www.youtube.com/watch?v=mHR6-KN-8uI

Heathcliffscathy · 14/05/2010 15:07

interesting article

the end of which follows:

The end of Thatcherism is a defeat for Murdoch and the Sun. But what we are seeing is the political class seeking to retain control of high politics under a welter of words about change and pluralism.

The important thing is not to sit back, watch and be cynical, indulging in the age-old vanity of the left that proclaims it has seen it all before and nothing ever changes (why this should be regarded as a revolutionary cast of mind beats me).

An opening has occurred now that Cameron who is an overt system conservative and Clegg who proclaims the need to replace a ?rotten system? are locked together. Intelligent, popular pressure is needed, with everything to play for.

We need to build ?infrastructure? as Sunny has argued and for this we need to get off our butts and take to the streets tomorrow, Saturday, in Parliament Square at 2pm and across the country.

Heathcliffscathy · 14/05/2010 15:10

nick robinson too right wing to be bbc's political editor?

I think so.

Congress and senate = legislature.

sophable funny you should mention Nick Robinson as there's a FB campaign about him (not sure if that's your link, but my Mac is taking ages.) I don't really care about his politics. I do care that he isn't being objective.

India Knight pointed out that he was only being filmed from the top half to avoid showing his boner

onebatmother · 14/05/2010 16:11

Absolutely Soph. I think personally I'm going to try and avoid anything like it. Statementofopinion is where it's at.

India Knight was very funny. I must say, wrt to Twitter, I'm COMPLETELY THRILLED that Quattro - without knowing it was me - quoted a tweet of mine as having made her laugh.

I now have a teeny-weeny insight into how utterly fabulous it must be to be Miss Caitlin Moran.

taffetacat · 14/05/2010 16:31

Lord I am so naive. I can't believe Nick was Oxford Uni president of Conservatives and then 1 year Young Conservative chairman and now has a massive role in informing the licence payer on political issues, seemingly objectively.

I feel quite sick. At least most of the public know about the paper's allegiances.

animula · 14/05/2010 16:37

Thing is, taffetacat, that's how it works. You rise as a journalist based on your contacts. I'd assume that his political contacts, made at university, and strengthened as he grew older, and worked, enable his work.

Should imagine he is especially valuable now, with an "in" on the new government.

It is a bit of a downer. And there aren''t enough female political journalists, either, precisely because of the contacts thing.

allegrageller · 14/05/2010 16:43

I didn't know that about NR either, though never liked him.
Public schoolboy Oxbridge fest it is then- trebles all round...

yeah, I saw some FB posts last night saying 'bye bye ID cards'- Liblab and no ID would have been a good deal. Anyone know what the Tory policy is on ID cards? I presume they like them...

taffetacat · 14/05/2010 16:55

I feel stupid now, animula, should have realised. I shall now be Wiki ing all TV commentators.

Hassled · 14/05/2010 16:57

Oh I'm so glad people are still here and happy and talking. As others have said, I've learnt a huge amount - and these just aren't the sort of discussions I routinely listen to or participate in in RL.

Re what sophable said - "billy bragg was saying that the shadow of thatch loomed large still in the consciousness of us all (def does here doesn't it?) and that it would be fantastic if the libdems meant that the the right wing of the party really could get cut out of the equation, with the cons moving further towards the centre allowing labour to take the left ground that it has moved so very very far away from in the last 13 years?"

I so hope that's true. I do have faith that the Lib Dems will serve a useful purpose in tempering excesses.

taffetacat - no! no! I didn't mean it like that! You have to picture a sour, middle-aged woman, bitter about the fact that she isn't going to be a political editor, and deeply resenting the fact that some people (strangely enough, mostly people of the male persuasion,) just seem to have opportunities thrown at them. (Me.)

I'm sure it's true in all cases, and NR does seem particularly "close".

animula · 14/05/2010 17:09

Argh! "I'm sure it's not true in all cases."

And it isn't - there are some excellent female political journalists.

animula - its fine and I appreciate your insights ( and political backstory ). I am just annoyed at myself for having got to 42 and not realised/ever thought about it.

taffetacat · 14/05/2010 17:19

Actually Sarah Jane Adventures is rubbish, we have dumbed down further with ZingZillas.

I think I shall be watching Newsround as TV current affairs choice.
