policywonk · 11/05/2010 22:14

Yeah ABD I've never bought the argument that politicians should have a 20-year background in middle management at a paper clips company. Policy advisor/party worker a pretty good grounding for working in government I'd have thought.

Ewe · 11/05/2010 22:14

Wow... from Twitter @AdamBienkov

Liam Fox, new Defence Sec

PfftThePinkoLeftyDragon · 11/05/2010 22:15

just marking my place on the never stopping threads

policywonk · 11/05/2010 22:15

Liam Fox was really annoying me the other day. I can't remember why, it's all a blur.

AppleTreeWick · 11/05/2010 22:16

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Apple thanks you kindly for your information nearlytoolate

animula · 11/05/2010 22:16

SamCam sooooo not Phoebe. I am willing to bet my socks and shoes and coat that she was über-girl at school. And doubt she even noticed anyone who didn't know how to "flick" their hair.

What is Gove? He worked so hard. for so long.

AppleTreeWick · 11/05/2010 22:17

oops do apologise jesus could I cock up anymore?

MmeLindt · 11/05/2010 22:18

My issue with a PM (or any politician for that matter) who has never had a "proper job" is that there is a danger that they will never truly understand the normal people that they represent. Particularly one like DC who has come from a privileged background, did his work experience for his godfather, a Tory MP then after Uni started work as a Tory researcher.

Heathcliffscathy · 11/05/2010 22:19

i like her too.

not as much as miriam. and i liked sarah too.

the wives are far superior all round to the hubbies!

policywonk · 11/05/2010 22:19

's like the MN polls innit. Don't worry Apple, bet you get a key ring or something.

auberginesrus · 11/05/2010 22:19

Ah there you all are, haven't had chance to catch up so not sure what you all fell out about on the previous thread.

For the record I am a libdem voter but naturally lefty, and not at all a closet Tory! It is possible to have principles which best fit in with the lib dems, it doesn't have to be a straight choice between labour and conservatives with all the undecideds on the fence wearing yellow

Anyway I have a lot of respect for Gordon and thought his speech tonight was great, even made me shed a tear.

Not at all happy at Tory government, but am desperately hoping that Libdems will curb their worst excesses. Obviously my email to Nick Clegg didn't make any difference.

Gutted about Gideon, was really hoping to see Vince in no11.

OK as you were

Ewe · 11/05/2010 22:19

Was going to start a thread about the reported complete lack of women in the coalition cabinet, disgraceful, should it be in politics or feminism?

I knew this would happen with having both topics!

Gosh, Wikipedia is updated already.

Hassled · 11/05/2010 22:20

Reasons to hate him #657 - he's 43. A few days ago I was 43 and now I am older than the Prime Minister. FFS.

DavidHameron · 11/05/2010 22:20

Apparently she studied Art at Bristol Poly and was a bit, like, radical. I may have met her...

onebatmother · 11/05/2010 22:21

Okay MrJusta, fair enough, but this Julian Glover piece from last Sunday is the kind of thing I meant, from para 4 onwards.

I'll leave it now. Gap Yah cheered me a fair bit, as did watching Adam Boulton do mad stary eyes at Alastair Campbell for the eigth time.

animula · 11/05/2010 22:21

Do they have to understand people, though, MmeLindt, or just power? I know, ideally, I'd rather they thought about people, rather than electorates but ....

Have been flicking through many "Rise of the New conservatives" books today, to go with Gove's Michael Portillo book, which I always read as a covert manifesto, and, my, they do worship the Blair. Though cannot, quite "get" it. They clearly thought if they simulated the effect of blair, it would matter more than any of the progressive policies. sigh.

policywonk · 11/05/2010 22:22

Yes, didn't she used to play snooker with Tricky? (Hey, that's two black men Dave will have met!)

Heathcliffscathy · 11/05/2010 22:22

yes lenin, he is hideous lying scoundrel of doom (campbell). but still, i CAN'T HELP IT I LIKE HIM. he is a shit. he doesn't pretend to be anything else!

nearlytoolate · 11/05/2010 22:23

ewe is that true?
Does anyone actually know any of the jobs?

Francagoestohollywood · 11/05/2010 22:24

I can't believe there is such thing as William Hague

policywonk · 11/05/2010 22:26

lol Franca. Is that an epistemological problem?

Obama - I can just picture him with a leg hooked over the arm of his chair, hand over the receiver, mouthing 'who?' at Rahm Emmanuel.

onebatmother · 11/05/2010 22:27

BTW I agree v much that Westminster is a pretty good grounding for Westminster, what with it being completely mad and all.

They have a far greater need to know about real lives of ordinary people than paper clips, and plenty do listen (for eg I think Ed Mili and on the Other Side probably David Willetts). Though obv lots don't have the foggiest.

choosyfloosy · 11/05/2010 22:27

well, back to reality....

not a bad speech from DC the PM for someone who hasn't slept for approx 130 hours.
