ZephirineDrouhin · 13/05/2010 16:20

I think my own viewpoint has shifted from anti-Tory to anti-Tory-and-Lib-Dem actually. And I would probably have voted Lib Dem if it had been tactically sensible where we live.

onebatmother · 13/05/2010 16:29

Well, it's certainly also been anti-Labour, so I think we should call it quits and not worry too much about actually saying what we think. Wankers threads for friendly chat and support, this for political discussion by and for those who self-identify as coming from the Left?

onebatmother · 13/05/2010 16:29

Not call it quits, call it evens, I mean.

BecauseImWorthIt · 13/05/2010 16:31

Trouble is, OBM, that's what I thought it was. But clearly our 'coming from the Left' stance is proving difficult for some. I hate being caught in the crossfire.

My problem, I know, so will retire to a safe distance for the moment.

Coolfonz · 13/05/2010 16:32

The one thing about Cameron, Clegg and Osbourne though is that they haven't participated in two insane wars in which around 2.5mn people died.

They should get a chance at least. If not just to break international law by not rounding up the war criminals and sending them to the Hague. Which I'm sure they have no intention of doing...

The war criminals even have a candidate for leader who tried to cover up the torture of a man who had his penis cuts by razor blades. What a lefty he will be!! He got so angry with Israel for forging passports that he told them off quite a lot you know! He's macho!

CatIsSleepy · 13/05/2010 16:34

yes everyone's had a bashing I guess
It's easy to be a bit overly forthright on tinternet and trample on sensibilities that you wouldn't in RL, with real friends for reasons of tact etc

I have a friend who was talking about voting LD and I don't know if she did or not, am looking forward to seeing her tomorrow and finding out, but am exceedingly unlikely to berate her if she did.

onebatmother · 13/05/2010 16:48

TBH I think it's slightly unrealistic for there not to be a bit of grumpiness, given the diagram of the last week. I think on the whole we've done okay, given the extent to which LibDems and Labour supporters have (or in my case, haven't) considered themselves cut from similar-ish cloth, in the past.

I don't think this is really a case of internet anonymity making us uncaring of people's feelings. The people I know who I have political discussions with speak to me passionately and I them.

onebatmother · 13/05/2010 16:49

exceptionally ugly last sentence that.

MmeLindt · 13/05/2010 16:49

BIWI
I am sorry that you have been upset by some ifthe comments (haven't read the whole of Sophables thread so not sure exactly what they were)

Tbh, anyone coming on a thread titled "Lefties" at a time when the Labour government has just been booted out of office, should perhaps be expecting a tiny bit of partisanism. This is not, and never has been, an open political thread. Not that other opinions are verboten but we are Lefties in the main. I did not go over to the Anxious Tories thread, lurk then post here about the anti-labour sentiment there (assume there is some, never looked tbh). The one time I ventured onto a more right wing thread I was patronised and told that I was being ridiculous.

Will continue to post where I want and about what I want and I hope everyone else does too. That was the great thing about these threads. They have been informative, funny, touching and educational. Shame to lose that.

BecauseImWorthIt · 13/05/2010 16:51

True, onebat. But the tone and vocabulary of Soph's opening post was really quite hurtful. Hence a retreat on my part. If I could actually stop reading and posting, that is!

Quattrocento · 13/05/2010 16:54

I think we should end the thread

We are slipping into a vortex of despair, regret, self-doubt and recrimination.

And we are not poking fun at the new cabinet, or not enough anyway

Highlander · 13/05/2010 16:56

everyone's a bit tired and bruised and defensive this week.

If Labour is to re-group, of course there's going to be a bit of argy-bargy and finger -pointing before you move on. nasty things are said in the heat of the moment, but I don't think we should agree to back off.

It's tricky on the internet but surely spirited, agressive debate is how you move forward and get stuff done. IMO, it's better to get it off your chest and apologise for any offence, rather than stifle debate for fear of offending anyone.

no-one here is really making personal attacks.

Right. Just seen the other thread, I'm completely astonished.

Hassled · 13/05/2010 17:30

Apropos of nothing, can I share the Guardian's quoting of Le Figaro's quoting of Sarkozy on Cameron: "He'll start out Eurosceptic and finish up pro-European. It's the rule. He'll be like all the others." . Gotta just love Sarkozy.

wubblybubbly · 13/05/2010 17:38

I'm feeling brave after all the lovely banter on here since last week, so I'm going to look up this other thread. Don't think I'll have the balls to post though...

I'll be gutted if our lovely lefty thread goes It's been a haven of humour in these twisty turny times.

gingercat12 · 13/05/2010 17:46

I miss The Guardian. Similarly to Ninjacat I was a bit shocked by them supporting Lib Dems. (I cannot see why, as they are obviously liberals.) When DC formed his government I also expected a front-page apology for helping them into power, but now I miss the crosswords too much. So I think we'll buy them again as soon as we are back in England.

taffetacat · 13/05/2010 18:00

lalala
< fingers in ears and hands over eyes >
< ignores falling out and other thread wantonly, a la Clegg>

so..........who do we fancy for our leader, comrades?

is Ed M looking good?

BecauseImWorthIt · 13/05/2010 18:03

Ed M looks very good to me!

animula · 13/05/2010 18:07

My bf wants DM purely on the grounds that he fancies him. And that if he's going to have to spend the next x number of years looking at the Leader, it should be someone fanciable.

I'm not sure I'm convinced by any of the candidates so far. I think all of them may be a bit tarnished by contact - and they're looking for someone to take to the wider electorate, aren't they?

gingercat12 · 13/05/2010 18:10

I like David Miliband, too, but I am really pissed off by him. He is wondering why Labour did not get more votes. I can tell you, pet. IT IS BECAUSE OF YOU! (sorry for shouting, I fany him, too.) You bottled it twice, and were nearly invisible during the campaign.

Sorry, time to go.

gingercat12 · 13/05/2010 18:11

I mean fancy him.

taffetacat · 13/05/2010 18:19

Milibands form a brotherly coalition?

Anyone got an opinion on Balls? ( lewd double entendres also welcomed )
