Nothing good about the Tories?

Can someone please explain to me what is so horrific about having a Tory government?

Don't get me wrong - I don't like Conservatism myself - but why the widespread panic? It's not as if it's a Lib/BNP coalition!

Is there nothing good about the Tories?

yes but they may not get that long

Tootlesmummy · 11/05/2010 19:03

And that's my real fear that people will blame them for having to take the harsh decisions to sort out the mess we're in. I keep saying 'surely not, people are not that blinkered are they' and then I wake up and realise that the tories could be in for a very short time and we'll be back into the Labour nightmare......

Blu · 11/05/2010 19:04

No 3rd runway...I agree. A good thing about the Tories!

alicatte · 11/05/2010 19:05

I think all governments 'screw up' its just how badly this plays out on the 'actual streets' as it were that makes the difference. That is the problem from the past which haunts the Conservatives.

No one is saying it is correct or fair - just that it is a factor which causes some alarm (to varying degrees)

AliGrylls · 11/05/2010 19:08

I am pleased that labour are out - people may say the thatcher years were terrible (I don't really know much about it as I was quite young during their government) but it is hardly like labour have done an amazing job. Looking at things objectively our economy is a mess, we have fought an almost pointless war and civil liberties have been hugely infringed - I don't understand how anyone can actually still be saying that these people have done a good job and that they want labour to continue governing the country.

Conservatives generally encourage new / small businesses and assuming that all businesses employ some people this is a good thing. Conservatives are against people being dependent on the state which I also positively agree with.

I don't really see the point of banging on about how awful Thatcher was, particularly, as David Cameron is not her and there are no coalmines for him to close down.

alicatte · 11/05/2010 19:08

Look on Channel 4 news now - something's happening.

electra · 11/05/2010 19:13

'The Thatcher years thing pisses me off. The Thatcher years really, really weren't bad for everyone. In fact, I don't know anyone in RL who did badly under Thatcher.'

Well, you know, that really pisses me off - this attitude.

It's what I despise about some tories - to them, only people like them exist, the rest are worth less than them so they don't even register in their heads. Can you honestly think some people did not suffer under Thatcher? If so you are totally blinkered.

And just so you know, my family did not suffer under Thatcher but I saw plenty of people who did - and I haven't forgotten it!

alienbump · 11/05/2010 19:13

Good things about the Tories being back in power... errmm ok

Better drama on TV, thinking Boys from the Blackstuff, GBH etc.

Re-joining the Labour Party - that's quite a nice moment.

DH is quite happy about my pre-election promise to move to France if the Tories got in (based on if I had to be governed by a right wing twonk it didn't matter where).

That's about all the positives I can come up with at the moment, and while I'm not spending my days crying I do actually feel like it if I think about it too deeply.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 19:21

OMG! He's going!! YAY!!!

He's going to ask the Queen to invite Cameron to form a government!!

alienbump · 11/05/2010 19:23

ok - ammend my last post. Am cryining now rather than just feeling like it.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 19:23

That speech brought tears to my eyes, he's not been a bad prime minister, there have been mistakes in the Labour party but he's a nice bloke.

alicatte · 11/05/2010 19:25

That was so dignified. How beautiful those children were.

Suddenly I want him back.

Blu · 11/05/2010 19:25

Bloody dignified.
And gracious.

None of his predessors on either side have managed that at a moment like this.

Tootlesmummy · 11/05/2010 19:28

Maybe not but let's rejoice that Labour are out!

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 19:28

Sad but the party's over now. It's time for the clean up.

alicatte · 11/05/2010 19:29

I'm in the middle here but I think its a bit soon for rejoicing

Tootlesmummy · 11/05/2010 19:31

I rejoice because I think there is now the chance of someone sorting it out.

We're in the sh*te, no doubt about it but if they had got back in then the real tough decisions wouldn't have been taken but as has already been pointed out money would have been wasted on ID cards etc.

alicatte · 11/05/2010 19:35

Rejoice then Tootles - but I don't feel I can join you yet.

alicatte · 11/05/2010 19:37

Oh god - can you hear the booing - I remember this from before.

DH says it will probably be shortlived but he's not breaking out the champagne yet either.

VicToryA · 11/05/2010 19:37

Blu, no I know none of those people. All the people I knew personally during the Thatcher years benefited hugely from her policies (including my mother's own council-estate family). But, of course, everyone's experience is different. My experience of the past 13 years is unemployment, recession, school fees to compensate for the crapness of our local brainwashing institutions, and a government that takes, takes, takes whilst giving nothing in return.

Belle, Ali and Cartoose:

I am going to look at c4 news now in the hope that I have reason to crack open the champagne that I've been saving since 1997!

alicatte · 11/05/2010 19:38

I just hope things stabilise quickly. I know I'm naturally anxious.

VicToryA · 11/05/2010 19:40

Premature, me fears, but: yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 19:48

It's natural to be anxious, there's going to be a tough time ahead for everyone. Cuts have to be made though, there's no escaping this. Things will get better.

alicatte · 11/05/2010 19:51

Lets hope then.
