Nothing good about the Tories?

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 11/05/2010 17:50

Can someone please explain to me what is so horrific about having a Tory government?

Don't get me wrong - I don't like Conservatism myself - but why the widespread panic? It's not as if it's a Lib/BNP coalition!

Is there nothing good about the Tories?

Someone on my FB just said they were 'distraught' about it, and another that they spent Friday crying about it!

A bit pissed off, maybe, but distraught and crying? Are they really going to do that much damage (as if Labour haven't mucked up a load of things too)?

Well people remember the thatcher years

IMoveTheStars · 11/05/2010 17:55

I'd like to know this too..

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 11/05/2010 17:56

That's not enough of a reason? Thatcher's not in charge now! And, like I said, Labour's mucked up lots of things too - just different things!

What do people actually think will happen with a Tory gov? And aren't people reassured by the chance that the LibDem involvement might temper some of their worse points?

VicToryA · 11/05/2010 17:56

I've been crying about the idea of yet more years of Labour in any form.

The Thatcher years thing pisses me off. The Thatcher years really, really weren't bad for everyone. In fact, I don't know anyone in RL who did badly under Thatcher.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 17:58

I'm getting the champagne on ice! No more Labour for a while. YAY!!

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 11/05/2010 18:01

Well, yes, I am pleased Labour's out for various reasons.

But I really, genuinely want to know why tory-haters are in such a state about them being in government.

I don't like a lot of what they stand for, but I do like their desire to maintain civil liberties for example. There are crap things about both main parties, IMO. But I'm not really asking for opinion, more an actual reason why people are so upset.

What do those of you who are so upset think is going to happen?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/05/2010 18:02

MrsWobble I don't know what it is that people think is going to happen.

They have committed to keeping tax credits for the majority that get them, and to maintaining NHS spending. No idea what is causing all the wailing.

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 11/05/2010 18:03

I just asked one of my friends on FB, someone I really, really like, so I hope she doens't take it personally. I just don't get the hysteria.

OP posts:
belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 18:03

I have no idea about the Tory haters, I've had to endure years of a Labour government, as has all the other Tory supporters, there's been no endless Labour bashing threads on here from us though.

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 11/05/2010 18:06

Ok, one of my friend's friends says the tories will axe tax credits. That's not true, is it? They're going to reduce them for higher earners. Or do people not trust them then, do you think? Do people think they'll end up axing them whatever they said pre-election?

OP posts:
compo · 11/05/2010 18:07

Oh yes thatche was great if you were rich
not so much if you were poor
and don't forget cameron was an advisor on poll tax
he's part of the snobby Bullingdon set

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 11/05/2010 18:10

But do you really think they'll do no good at all for the country?

Can you elaborate on the 'snobby Bullingdon set' and why that means the country is doomed?

OP posts:
Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/05/2010 18:11

No they will not axe tax credits, people are just spouting bullshit in all directions. Very annoying.

Compo - what was actually wrong with poll tax? The rebanding process that happened at the same time was what caused the big rises, not the actual poll tax. What it would have meant was that the family who live opposite to us in exactly the same sized house would pay double the council tax we do because there are 4 adults living there, not 2. And that the single Mum diagonally opposite would pay half what we do rather than 75%.
I cannot see anything unfair in that.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 18:11

They are going to cut them for people that earn over 50k, there's nothing wrong with this. They won't axe them, I wish they would though so they can replace them with something more efficient. They are hardly going to leave half of the country without this top up.

The Poll tax wasn't a bad idea, it charged people with regards to how many people over the age of 18 living in the house rather then per house. If there was only 1 adult in the house the tax was alot less then the tax one person pays now. The police/councils etc have to be funded some how.

Cartoose · 11/05/2010 18:12

You're right MrsWobble it's not true.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 18:12

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/politics/963316-the-thought-of-a-Tory-government-actually-happening-bloody-depr esses ARGH!!!

Cartoose · 11/05/2010 18:14
MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 11/05/2010 18:15

So the poll tax was an alternative to council tax, right? So why did everyone hate it?

OP posts:
Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/05/2010 18:15

Belle - hurrah, another voice of reason

Shaz10 · 11/05/2010 18:16

The Tories managed to put the kibosh on yet another Bloody Wonderful Education Initiative that Labour were trying to fast track before the election, so I'm happy with them!

Blu · 11/05/2010 18:18

VicTorya - How lucky for you. So you know
no-one who lost their house during the mass re-possessions of the early 90s? No-one who lived in any of the coalfield areas in England or Wales? None of the women at Grunwick? None of the families of the dead of the HMS Sheffield? Oh, and what about the cosying up to murderous S American dictators? And I do believe that it was Thatcher who sold arms to Iraq in the first place - she was advised not to be the MoD but chose to ignore that advice because of chaps in Trade were advising her of the enormous profits they could make.

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 11/05/2010 18:18

It just feels like everyone's feeding off scaremongering, and enjoying the sense of drama. It's not as if we're going to descend into violent civil war!

OP posts:
Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/05/2010 18:18

MrsWobble - it was introduced at the same time as a re-banding exercise happened, which meant that a lot of properties moved up bands and therefore the taxes increased. It is actually a much fairer system because it takes into account likely use of local services.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 18:19

They hated the poll tax because the bloody Sun newspaper told them to!! Those with big households thought it was unfair , just as unfair as a couple/single person having to pay 1k a year in council tax hey!

I'm tempted to apply to become a tory MP!
