Nothing good about the Tories?

Can someone please explain to me what is so horrific about having a Tory government?

Don't get me wrong - I don't like Conservatism myself - but why the widespread panic? It's not as if it's a Lib/BNP coalition!

Is there nothing good about the Tories?

Lego, but isn't that because of the godawful mess Labour have got us into?

legoStuckinmyHoover · 11/05/2010 18:41

I too hope you are wrong too cargirl!

Though have to say, I have already since Friday stopped spending as I have no idea if I will have a job, house, income next year, so if we are all doing that....who knows where the economy will be

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 18:42

The NHS isn't better. I work in a spanking new PFI hospital that has no staff! The sickness rates are huge because the hospital works on skeleton staff. The tax payer will be paying for this hospital 10 times over.

Stop reading the tabloids

No, it is because of the global rescession.

There was a choice of how to get us out of it. It is not as staright forward as cuts. If you cut my job, I dont spend; less cash in the econmy, my not spending will mean someone in tesco will loose their job as there is no demmand and so on and I will not be alone [that is, on mass-JOB LOSSES]!

IMO, the wrong choice has been made-we are from now on in doomed. And I, like GB, think there will be a double dip as the conservatives are not learning from history IMO!

Blu · 11/05/2010 18:49

Rosieeo - it's because of the banks. Which the Tories have never once called for the regulation of.

The NHS - well I have spent weeks of the last couple of years in hospital with DS / my Mum and also watched a collegue go through 30 operations after she was hit by a driver on a zebra crossing. All of it has happened quicker, better and in better surroundings than anything I saw in hospitals with other relatives in the 80s. Though I completely agree that staff are willdy overworked.

I realise that cuts have to made, but it is about when and to who and what. It also has to be discussed in conjuction of where they raise money from. this is where they are all divided. And this is where we all seem to agree/disagree.

how anyone can claim that the poll tax was a good thing is beyond me
perhaps you should look it up on wikipedia
'the bullingdon set' refers to the fact that Cameron and co are upper class elitists

legoStuckinmyHoover · 11/05/2010 18:50

Snap!

itsatiggerday · 11/05/2010 18:50

MintHumbug - unless they managed a Lib-Lab coalition including all the regional parties. Then Scottish, Welsh, N Irish MPs would all withhold their necessary votes unless they were exempted from all cuts and hey presto, England gets to pay through the nose again in compensation for all the sponging needy regions.

I hope a Con-Lib coalition bites the bullet and makes the necessary cuts to get us back in the black eventually and the coalition nature means the usual sniping about 'nasty party' is recognised as nonsense.

I wasn't even on this continent when Thatcher was voted in so don't know the experience, but looking historically I can't help feeling the Tories have had a bit of a rough ride at being dubbed the nasty party of cuts when they frequently seem to come in at the end of a period of disastrous Labour economic performance. Someone has to clean up the mess, and that's not a painless process...

dreamylady · 11/05/2010 18:50

MrsWobble you talked about 'we're not going to descend into civil war' or something like it... Do you remember the Toxteth riots? The Brixton riots? Not exactly a war but civil unrest - on a large and very damaging scale.

Lego - Alistair Darling went on record some months ago saying that whoever won the election would need to implement cuts worse than Thatcher.

It is also ridiculous to suggest that the only reason we are in this mess is the global recession. Brown ran a deficit from 2002-2007 which were boom years, and so when the recession hit we were ill equipped as a country to deal with it.

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 11/05/2010 18:52

So maybe I'm just blase because, well, there's fuck all I can do about it. Why waste my energy and emotions having palpitations about a Tory government when the most important thing is to make the best of a bad job and get on with it.

Fingers firmly crossed that the LibDem involvement will temper some of the worst bits about a Tory government.

I'm, quite frankly, glad that we don't have marauding bandits roaming the country raping and massacring whole towns. I just think it's an overreaction to be 'distraught' and 'crying' about it.

In terms of civil liberties, we'll be far better off under the tories. And, whatever Labour have wanted to do, they've actually only succeeded in increasing the gap between rich and poor. And they've managed to create a culture of entitlement and people thinking they have a right to money from the government whether they contribute anything or not (excepting, of course, those who genuinely can't contribut).

Tootlesmummy · 11/05/2010 18:53

The cuts are not as a result of the Thatcher (Conservative) administration. It is a result of poor decision making and over spending by Labour.
People are kidding themselves if they think that had Labour won we wouldn't have to pay back the money. You would have, they would have just snuck it in.
I don't like the idea of having to pay more however, I do not want to end up in the same state as Greece and I want my DS to grow up knowing there is a sustainable economy which means he can stay in the country and get rewarded for his hard work.
Unfortunately I think that when the cuts come people will blame the Conservatives and at the next election vote back in the useless bunch of twats who have just been voted out.
IMHO of course (will now get off soap box.......!)

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 18:53

Each government builds on the previous one. There needs to be cuts, Labour did a cracking job in some aspects but it was never sustainable as they borrowed huge amounts of money to create all that they have done whilst keeping interest rates as low as they could, something had to give and it did, the economy's now in a right mess and it's going to take a long time to sort it out, it's going to hurt everyone but it needs to be done. They were lucky not to go in the last general election to be honest.

I have to go and burn the tea. Be nice to the tories please.

compo · 11/05/2010 18:53

well all we can do is wait and see

lets see if in 2 years time the tories can do better than Labour

Blu · 11/05/2010 18:54

MintHumbug - but the Tories AGREED with deregulation!

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 18:54

' I just think it's an overreaction to be 'distraught' and 'crying' about it.'

completely agree with that

dreamylady · 11/05/2010 18:55

err question was good things..

no 3rd runway at heathrow
reduce top cut off for child tax credit (?correct me if I'm wrong on that one)
no ID cards

that's it.

pinkgrapefruitjuice · 11/05/2010 18:56

I agree with tiredlady that the problem many people have with Tory party stems from their historical lack of support and narrowing/cutting of services which are important for the less affluent.

Tootlesmummy · 11/05/2010 18:56

Compo, let's be honest and realistic now we will need to give the Tories longer than 2 years to sort out the mess surely!?
