Nothing good about the Tories?

Can someone please explain to me what is so horrific about having a Tory government?

Don't get me wrong - I don't like Conservatism myself - but why the widespread panic? It's not as if it's a Lib/BNP coalition!

Is there nothing good about the Tories?

MrsWobble - No - council tax is more like a reversion to the old rates - based on your property. Poll tax was per head, even if you all lived in a one room hovel. So hit the poorest very hard indeed.

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 11/05/2010 18:20

Well, I don't think I'll be going that far, bell!

Blu - what makes you think that the same mistakes will be made? And do you not think that Labour have made some pretty big cock ups during their time in government too?

Blu - we are not voting for Thatcher, incase you hadn't noticed

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 18:21

Repeat after me; We are not having a Thatcher government!

Go on, say it!!

expatinscotland · 11/05/2010 18:22

Poll tax, a tax on your very person.

W.T.F?

Cartoose · 11/05/2010 18:22

"I'm tempted to apply to become a tory MP!"

I'd vote for you belle

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 18:25

Aww, thanks Cartoose (wonders how you do this)

ElizabethWakefield · 11/05/2010 18:25

You might want to ask a Scottish person what was wrong with the poll tax, we were used as guinea pigs, it was nothing like the council tax. It was incredibly unfair.

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 18:26

Ah well, it was a long time ago. Labour have made more then a few mistakes (something about a 10p income tax....)
We don't have a thatcher government.

MrsWobbleTheWaitress · 11/05/2010 18:27

But doesn't poll tax mean no council tax? I mean, we all pay council tax, unless we're students. Surely they've got to get money from somewhere to run the country?

Anyway, back to my original question:

So, the Tories screwed up last time they were in office.

Labour have screwed up a lot too.

So why the hysteria that the Tories are getting in? Surely they are both equally shit in different ways, and surely both have at least some good points.

Re the poll tax.
try this for fairness purleeze...

One millionaire man or woman in his mansion paying same poll tax as granny in her council house as only one person living there [just down the road]? Fair?

Less well off families will have more adults per square foot living under the same roof- FACT. Fair??

expatinscotland · 11/05/2010 18:29

'We don't have a thatcher government. '

Some areas are still living with the effects of it, however.

tiredlady · 11/05/2010 18:29

Thatcher is not at all irrelevant. The conservative party are still enthralled at her memory.
She did enormous damage to this country, and the conservative party, for all their "caring conservative" crap, have not changed one iota. The NHS, social services and education were all slaughtered at her hands.

legoStuckinmyHoover · 11/05/2010 18:29

That was what was unfair.

CarGirl · 11/05/2010 18:34

Perhaps my big issue is being the grand daughter and niece of coal miners and watching their thriving town decimated and even where I lived I knew friends who had parents that were unemployed for over a decade because there was just no work across the whole region. My single parent cousin scraping by despite working etc

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 18:34

Yes, and we'll continue to live with the effects of a Labour government.

You talk bollocks when you say that the conservatives are still under the hold of Maggie Thatcher. This was 20 odd years ago, get a grip.

legoStuckinmyHoover · 11/05/2010 18:36

Why then are the current 'new' conservatives [also 'changed'] wheeling out old duffers like micheal Howard then?!!

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 18:36

I used to live in an ex-mining community cargirl. My father was long term unemployed because there were no jobs so I have seen this aswell. It doesn't mean that this conservative government is going to be the same.

legoStuckinmyHoover · 11/05/2010 18:36

[from 20 years+ ago]

belledechocolatefluffybunny · 11/05/2010 18:37

Just because there's a few old members it doesn't mean it's the same party with the same ideals as Thatcher.

Blu · 11/05/2010 18:38

I was replying to Victorya who said that the tory years 'weren't really bad for everyone', and that she knows no-one who suffered under the Tories last time.

Labour did some terrible things. Iraq. For starters. But no, IMO they were not just as bad. They passed the minumum wage - which has been a success, not the disaster the Tories said it would be. The NHS and schools are way, way better. And I have personal experience of both under both gvts..Given Iraq, and the state of the economy, and the murdoch press, the Tories should have had a landslide. But they didn't. I could go on. But won't. As you were.

alicatte · 11/05/2010 18:38

Well I have voted the rainbow in the past and could not at all be described as a 'tory-hater' BUT I do remember NOT the Thatcher years but what came at the end of the last Conservative administration - it gave a lot of people pause for thought for years, certainly I can't help but remember it because the experience was so powerful. It was frightening, I had a small child and had just given up work, the interest rates were all over the place and jobs were insecure in a way that I don't think people can imagine today. Possibly that is what gave New Labour power for so long and its echoes are still there.

I guess the Conservatives need to prove themselves because of that, you can't help but feel a little bit worried in case it happens again.

Nick Clegg himself started out by unequivocally stating, 'You can't trust the Tories.' Probably because it is a message that resonates - despite the current problems.

CarGirl · 11/05/2010 18:38

belle I'm just not convinced , sorry, really hope I'm wrong.

My parents benefitted wonderfully under Thatcher, I even got out of having school milk

legoStuckinmyHoover · 11/05/2010 18:38

I read and heard that this conservative government will be making the most SEVERE cuts to the country. Worse than that during the Thatcher years...

CarGirl · 11/05/2010 18:40

I wonder if spitting image will return and we can have the ever greying tory leader......
