And why do we think Labour has anything left to offer after 13 years?

Just wondering...

Those private profits are what pays for pensions.

Why not have the RMT and the other rail unions run them. No subsidies from taxpayers. See how much money gets siphoned of by train drivers.

On average a train driver can make £20,000 more than a teacher

Trezo · 13/08/2019 08:22

These private profits are away in off shore tax havens. We want a fair taxation system so the rich pay their fair share so all public services are provided for the public, for all the public.

cdtaylornats · 13/08/2019 13:32

There used to be a group of 10 people who worked in a business. Every Friday they went out to dinner and it was agreed the 4 workers would eat free, the Owner of the company would pay half the bill and the engineers 10% each. After a couple of years the manager of the restaurant gave them 20% off the bill. But the workers complained about getting none of the benefit. So one week the owner didn't turn up and nobody ate. That's a socialist victory and that's where Corbyn will get us.

Politicians are struggling with reality these days.

My friend works for an American owned company with a European head office in London, he works from home but from the Edinburgh office. He lives in Milan.

Try to over tax even the moderately well paid and they will go away.

Welcome to the world of remote working.

In air traffic control we used to have engineers at every radar and comms station - now they sit in our centre with lots of telemetry. The centre is in Scotland but it could be anywhere on the planet.

Corbyn will drive the earners to remote tax havens.

Trezo · 13/08/2019 16:28

Neoliberalism has failed this country look at the state of this government and the state of this country.

Socialism is badly needed for everyone.

Labour will get the rich to pay their fair share look at tax avoiders, close loop holes. Get HMRC to do their job. There needs to be a big shake up Labour will make sure money is not hidden away in tax havens.

The tax rate will be just below other European countries so tell me where will big businesses go? Answer that? Our public services will be properly funded.

cdtaylornats · 13/08/2019 18:03

Labour will simply drive high earners away.

Trezo · 14/08/2019 08:48

Labour is fair. As I say where will they go? Taxation will be lower than other European countries.

cdtaylornats · 14/08/2019 10:59

Then where is the money coming from?

I don't believe for a second that Labour will lower taxes.Fairy tail economics is wonderful until reality bites. Under a Labour government the first thing that happens is every NHS worker, every teacher, every council worker puts in for an above inflation payrise - who pays?

Trezo · 14/08/2019 13:02

I said the taxation for big business threshold will be set just lower than that which European countries set theirs. I did not say lower taxes for everyone that is ridiculous. A living wage where people who work are not reliant on benefits.

If you care to look at the Labour manifesto fully costed and polices you will see where Labour would find the money to fund public services etc. Really it's just common sense economics.

cdtaylornats · 14/08/2019 14:14

I do like a joke - ok Trezo I get you believe the fantasy economics that is Labours manifesto.

What's a big business ?

Trezo · 15/08/2019 08:57

It's not fantasy economics it is sound common sense economics. What a state the Tories have left this country in they are a bunch of incompetents.
14 Million People living in poverty

  • Millions of food bank parcels handed out
  • soaring homelessness & malnutrition
  • Victorian diseases & a reduction in life expectancy & Boris Johnson says “his is the party of the people!”

Did you know that an average of one homeless person died every 19 hours in the last six months in the UK, research has found. At least 235 people, aged between 16 and 104 years old, who were homeless died between January and June 2019.

This Government has exacerbated every cause of violent crime known to exist, including inequality, poverty, poor mental health care & a crisis in our schools. The only people Boris doesn’t want to lock up are the bankers who caused the financial crisis

Trezo · 15/08/2019 09:00

Big corporations who don't pay their fair share instead hide it away in tax havens.

SpearEyes890 · 01/09/2019 20:38

it is seen as cool and hip to hate them.that is why babe

Trezo · 01/09/2019 23:06

They are the worst government ever

Missangrypants · 03/09/2019 19:59

Not read the whole thread.

As someone said on another thread, those that vote conservative generally keep it to themselves because of the grief they will get.

This must be true otherwise how do they get support and win elections.

At the end of the day for a lot of people it boils down to tribalism. They cannot applaud some of the good things that the "other side" often do.

So the Tories decimated the coal industry in the 80's, cut union rights, sold off council housing and didn't replace it. Labour gets into power and were any of those things reversed? No and why not? Because it didn't suit them. Complain when in opposition then forget about it when in power. Same goes for the Tories.

This is why there is so much apathy around.

The majority of politicians are two faced liars. Shouting about coups, when they have been trying to do the same. Talking about not wanting no deal when they are doing everything to ensure that Brexit is revoked.

Democracy is being stamped on by everyone. Tories, Labour, Lib Dems etc. No one can take the moral high ground.

So when the general election comes round I will not be voting for a party but instead on what policies I feel I can support and hold my nose about those I don't.

Trezo · 04/09/2019 20:38

"So the Tories decimated the coal industry in the 80's, cut union rights, sold off council housing and didn't replace it. Labour gets into power and were any of those things reversed? No and why not? You are talking about New Labour Tory Lite He didn't reverse these things.

Labour Party now are traditional Labour. And as you say you will vote for polices that's what I will do. Labour have 100 polices including a green revolution making more jobs saving the planet.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 05/09/2019 06:34

People's memories are v. short. They have forgotten the strikes, shortages and general chaos of the late 70s under a Labour administration

Very short memories? That was 40 yrs ago (not 20 like a PP said) and we've had a Labour govt since then during which, despite whatever your views are about the Iraqi war, we had none of the things you describe.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 05/09/2019 07:20

So the Tories decimated the coal industry in the 80's

I'm no Tory voter and never will be but this isn't actually true. Production of coal was falling massively and had been for some time and anyway, coal could be imported at half the price - it was the National Coal Board who closed the pits - backed by the govt sure - but still inevitable.

labour gets into power and were any of those things reversed? No and why not? Because it didn't suit them

Presumably you mean Tony Blair's govt who came to power more than 12 yrs after the miners strike: miners strike 1984/5 Tony Blair came to power 1997 - should have reversed this decision.

It was an irreversible decision at this point both economically and practically. To keep the coal pits open would have required massive subsidies paid for through taxes. The pits have been described as tax guzzlers.

I think what people hated Margaret Thatcher and her Tory government for during the miners strike was their callous treatment of the miners and lack of empathy for the decimated communities caused by the closure of the pits. Also brutal police treatment of striking miners.
But sadly closure of the pits was inevitable.

360eyes · 24/09/2019 11:08

Crikey this thread was started in 2010, but now that you ask, because they are useless, shit and out of touch with real peoples needs. That's putting it nicely.

Labour aren't great, but people will either vote Lib Dem or Labour in desperation.

See you in ten years where I will be saying the same same about them if they get in.

And so the cycle repeats

cyclingmad · 06/11/2019 22:49

As a single childless person, it doesn't matter who I vote for really as there are never really any policies that really benefit me; whoever I vote for will hammer me for more money either way by either taxing me until I have nothing left or wanting to take away assets because how dare I try to ensure I have a reasonable retirement pot as if I don't ever marry I don't have another person's income to rely on. But under Corbyn its deemed unfair for me to have a second property, doesn't even take my situation into account either. Hardly think I am being 'too rich' or too selfish.

And I don't even think I want children so any so called future benefits I may receive isn't something to consider really until I decide I want children first of all and have them.

Coppersulphate · 06/11/2019 23:15

I don't hate the Tories.
I will be voting for them and hope they get a large majority.

paolo2143 · 06/11/2019 23:41

I think that over the last 48 hours anybody who had any doubts about why they are called the nasty party should have saw the light.

All political parties are at times deceitful and self serving, but this current PM and cabinet take it to a whole new level.

mummymeister · 07/11/2019 10:25

paolo2143 - hmm shall we ask the ex deputy leader of the Labour party that question?

Labour cannot fund their grand schemes. they cannot put figures against them they just think that somehow the "rich" will pay. and who are the rich? well its going to be a real shock when they turn out to be anyone who earns more than minimum wage but thats the plan.

Momentum/Labour party are anti semitimic on that one single issue alone they will not get my vote. and really, that should be the case for everyone. they gloss over it and talk in general terms about discrimination and wont address the issue. I really, really hope that they get absolutely hammered at this election. because then Momentum will get booted out and people - not London elite - can take back the party.

JimmyGrimble · 12/11/2019 19:30

There is no Labour Manifesto yet. The £1.3 Trillion is another Tory lie and they’ve had their arses handed to them over and again over it. Those who choose to believe lies do so for their own self interest.
Businesses will leave? No they fucking won’t. I’m more concerned about what could happen to the NHS. America’s healthcare system is the most expensive in the world ... a visit to A&E? $1500 ... an ibuprofen? $50 ... it’s turkeys voting for fucking Christmas.
The Express would have us believe that Corbyn refused to bow at the cenotaph (when he clearly did) when Alexander Pfeffel turned up looking like Catweasel and laid the wreath upside down. You could not make this shit up.

Coppersulphate · 20/11/2019 17:34

At least Boris doesn't count Hamas, Hezbollah and the IRA among his friends.

Jeremy Corbyn leads an anti Semitic Stalinist party.

fedup21 · 22/11/2019 12:35

Goodness-who resurrected a thread from 2010?!
