hello

OP posts:
Beachcomber · 07/05/2010 11:37

Funny isn't it that I would imagine the majority of the LibDem voters would probably prefer NOT to work with the Tories but that is what they may end up getting.

Disenchanted3 · 07/05/2010 11:38

Thanks Spoph, that clears it up

can we have a new thread yet?
Anyone care to report back on any other threads - can't cope with more than one!

jennylindinha · 07/05/2010 11:39

"Why deny the people the fabulous system that elected you mayor?" - Good one Paxman, hehehe.

thetoriesaretoast · 07/05/2010 11:39

Jenny, it's not only not wrong it's a must! Sadly I have no leftover wine.

InmyheadIminParis · 07/05/2010 11:40

I'm amazed how optimistic you all are. Surely all Cameron has to do is say okay to a referendum. Glegg would find it very hard to pull back from that, even if he wants to.

Disenchanted3 · 07/05/2010 11:40

Exactlt bechcomber.

Wonder how many LIbDem voters, IF they could have seen whats going on today, yesterday - would ahve just voted for Labour?!

Nymphadora · 07/05/2010 11:40

LOL at them trying to get rid of Boris Johnson

VoteRedLentil · 07/05/2010 11:40

Dis, let's say there is s seat where the Tories win on 20,005 Lab getss 20,000 and the Libs get 19,995, there is only one mp's seat up for grabs in that constituency so the Tory wins and the Labour and Lib Dem votes don't count. It is a straight win/lose situation in each constituency.

Under a pr system, you would look to see who the definite losers were. Then you'd check their ballot papers for a 'second preference' and then count those votes again, giving them to the Tories and Labour as suits until you have an overall verdict.

So you end up with a better (though not perfect) representation of people's voting intentions.

Heathcliffscathy · 07/05/2010 11:40

sorry, i sort of love boris.

mostly because tory hq must wince everytime he's on.

i like all the ones that aren't just carboard cutouts nodding along with whatever the party line is.

VoteRedLentil · 07/05/2010 11:42

But Cameron doesn't want a referendum because most Labour voters would 'second preference' the Lib Dems or other small parties and the Tories would be much likely to be the third party for a generation.

CatIsSleepy · 07/05/2010 11:43

right, been out, what's the latest? is Clegg sucking up to the tories now? noooooooooooooooooooo

sallyJayGorce · 07/05/2010 11:43

Nearlytoolate - I agree. Broadly, the farming/traditional and moneyed rural residents are Tory/Lib Dem and in Yorkshire, where we have a lot of family, the ex-industrial, shattered mining communities are Labour. It is interesting that the farmers/fishermen etc - especially here where the Industrial Revolution is still rolling news - don't see see Labour as the party of the working class but of the comfortable sheltered middle class. Makes total sense historically but is completely unsatisfactory in modern politics.

Is it wrong to have given the left-over wine to my toddler?

expatinscotland · 07/05/2010 11:43

Haahaa @ Boris.

'Bye bye, Boris.'

Like, 'Get the hell off TV NOW!'

Nymphadora · 07/05/2010 11:44

My local ones on TV atm.

Westmorland & Lancaster are near me. Lancaster& Fleetwood is a strange combo to me , not that close together so may pull rural votes. Morecambe will have rural too.

Westmorland had a Lib Dem who seemed v popular.

If anyone hears these can they post them am v interested.

I love Boris. Regardless of politics he is a distinct personality, as is poor old knackered Gordon Brown. Most of the the rest are interchangeable.

I loved Cyril Smith, Alan Clarke and Tony Benn too.

InmyheadIminParis · 07/05/2010 11:45

Red Lentil I'd be surprised if Cameron didn't bite Clegg's and off right now. Otherwise he's the leader who led his party to lose an unlosable election.

jennylindinha · 07/05/2010 11:46

Here you go - cheers! clink

Am deffo going to open another bottle...

nearlytoolate · 07/05/2010 11:46

VoteRedLentil I think you are talking about AV, which is one kind of electoral reform but is not actually muhc more proportional (as in reflecting share of the first preference vote). It is the kind that Lab support because it is close to the status quo. I'd like to see a much more proportional system, which does have the downside of needing multi member constituencies of some kind. Its the only way to get closer to 'share of the vote'.

InmyheadIminParis · 07/05/2010 11:47

Please let me be proved wrong

Heathcliffscathy · 07/05/2010 11:47

hahahahahahah!

on bbc, andrew neil: tory rage internally at how campaign was conducted.

NO WAY on any electoral reform.

pmsl.
