really really interesting statement from clegg.

he's going to let the conservatives hang! basically he's saying: 'go on then, try to form a govt' whilst at the same time saying 'i will not budge on electoral reform' which the tories will never agree to in a form that he'll go for.

very clever indeed imo.

Ouch

wubblybubbly · 07/05/2010 10:46

Prolesworth I hope you're right, that's a glimmer of hope at least.

Gordonsavingexpertdotcom · 07/05/2010 10:46

What a surprise, Clegg to go with Cameron ("told you all along he was a wrong 'un" emoticon)

I think he is right. Unfortunately.
But yes, it is cause for hope that the Tories didn't have a landslide.
Lab and Lib have really got to get their act together now to form constructive opposition. Please Gordon, stand down.

policywonk · 07/05/2010 10:46

He's not saying he's going to support them. He's saying they can have first crack at forming a gvt - big difference.

Oooh David Steel reminds me of the last lib-lab pact.

Has Cleggy spoken yet?

Nymphadora · 07/05/2010 10:48

Although this is the make or break point. Lib should soften Tories and if they don't Tories can crash and burn (ooh I like that one!)

Gb likely to go without Lib support though isn't he? Are we backing HH if he does?

theyoungvisiter · 07/05/2010 10:48

Every time I hear a Tory ruling out electoral reform I give a little cheer.

Every refusal is a blow to a lib-con coalition.

Surely SURELY there's no way Clegg will form a coalition without a public promise from Dave on reform? Surely?

MmeLindtChocBrownies · 07/05/2010 10:48

Ah, ok.

So what happens now?

Oh god, please, please let the Lab and LD form a coalition. I wish I could DO something!

auberginesrus · 07/05/2010 10:49

DH said more or less what sophable said, that Clegg has taken himself out of the equation and given the tories enough rope to hang themselves or have to move extremely far on electoral reform.

He had to say that though or he would be going back on what he said in the campaign

Its all very interesting

whomovedmychocolate · 07/05/2010 10:50

I'm all confused now - I have cbeebies on mute and can hear R4 in the dining room.

theyoungvisiter · 07/05/2010 10:50

yes, having first crack at forming a gvt is NOT the same is being able to do it.

If Clegg doesn't whip his MPs to support the Tories, there's no way they'll get a vote through.

MmeLindtChocBrownies · 07/05/2010 10:50

Minority gmt will not work. There will be 4 years of standstill and wrangling.
