Anxious Conservatives thread!

As the lefties have one, we need one too.

I have everything crossed for them to win, by however small a margin, and red wine and arsenic ready in case they lose...

I daren't stay up as my nerves can't take it. I just desperately want to wake up to a Conservative government tomorrow morning.

Lefties, please don't intrude. I have deliberately started this thread so as not to pester you on your anxious thread. It feels mean and unnecessary to tell you why you are wrong on your own thread.

He is meeting the parliamentary party at 6 cartoose.
Can't beleive he is offering AV
(note to self - go and re-read wiki on PR to try and understand the different systems)

Strix · 10/05/2010 20:24

Oh Hell.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 10/05/2010 20:32

I feel like we are steadily advancing through the Circles of Hell.

This is an absolute nightmare.

BeenBeta · 10/05/2010 20:55

I think William Hague coming out and making a best and final offer will calm nerves a bit and the whole 'Labour Cabinet Meeting' tonight just seems to have been pointless.

GB unilateraly announced he was meeting Clegg before the Cabinet even met - there was nothing to talk about.

Cartoose · 10/05/2010 21:04

Is it true that GB could be stuck at no10 until Sept or Oct? How can Clegg negotiate with the Labour Party if he doesn't know who the leader is going to be?

nighbynight · 10/05/2010 21:21

They walked through this scenario on the bbc, I think, and suggested that a guarantee would be given of who the leader would be. But it is pretty ropey.

nighbynight · 10/05/2010 21:24

TBH, I cant see how he can go with Labour, as the PM would then be unelected, and also not from the party with the most seats. looks bad.

Cartoose · 10/05/2010 21:28

Thanks nightbynight. This whole thing really is surreal.

Strix · 11/05/2010 07:26

I keep hoping that the Libs are talking to Labour as a PR exercise to show they explored all the options befor aligning with the Conservatives. But, I fear this may just be wishful thinking.

Cyclops · 11/05/2010 07:41

I have a question.

Whenever I see a map of post-GE 2010 UK, England is predominantly blue.

Tell me, what are the pros and cons of devolution again? Genuine question...

abr1de · 11/05/2010 08:46

My Scottish Tory husband is starting to ask himself that question.

It has all kinds of ramifications. All those SCottish regiments who have sworn oaths of allegiance to the Queen, what would happen to them? Someone was saying that Scotland could turn itself into a mini Switzerland: concentrated on financial services and mountains. Only their famed financial institutions came out very badly in the credit crunch.

As far as England is concerned we'd gain from spending our own tax money on our own hospitals and schools.

But it would be very sad to end the Union.

Strix · 11/05/2010 08:48

There's a Tory in Scotland?!?!?!

Cartoose · 11/05/2010 10:33

Clegg to make an announcement soon.

whiffleisCleggxhausted · 11/05/2010 10:44

I've been off for couple days. SIL who's in IT been messing about with enhancing my laptop and now it won't switch on, only works in safe mode and

Yes...do have to question pros and cons of the union.

I'm just so at what a wretch Clegg is turning out to be. Why negotiate for 4 days with tories, and as agreement is near, fling the whole thing wide open again. Utterlly dishonourable.

Penthesileia · 11/05/2010 10:51

Interesting times when supporters of the party of Union question the union...

Aussieng · 11/05/2010 11:27

Cyclops - sorry if I am stating what you already know but (put simplistically) the Tory constituencies are larger in terms of geographical area (being predominantly rural) but the labour constituencies are generally more population dense. If the map is rejigged (as the BBC did on election night) to make all constituencies the same geographical size (and so better reflect population density) the map is much less blue.

Penthesileia · 11/05/2010 11:34

Aussieng: 297 Tory MPs in England to 191 Labour MPs (I think), so a 3:2 "majority" - not insignificant.

But, as you say, Labour still dominates the city, which is where most (tax) money is raised (and spent, no doubt). It's really not so clear cut as saying a separate Tory England would mean a fairer distribution of Tory-supporting taxpayers' taxes... Arguably rural Tories would be "unfairly" determining the expenditure of "Labour" cities...

Aussieng · 11/05/2010 11:41

Nope- not at all insignificant, Penthesileia - there is a large Tory majority in England which deserves recognition. I was just making the valid point that the map has restrictions on its validity - it looked quite skewed even before GE 2010.

Penthesileia · 11/05/2010 11:46

Agreed.

Thanks for the replies.

This is dragging on and on now, we need to be put out of our collective misery.

Strix · 11/05/2010 14:55

Wake up, Cartoose. You have only passed out. Hope you didn't hit your head on the way down.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 11/05/2010 16:28

Looks like we are back heading in the right direction now

Strix · 11/05/2010 17:14

^^

Wake up! It's going to be okay... (we think).

Cyclops · 11/05/2010 17:26

tis looking more promising, I'll give you that...
