Anxious Conservatives thread!

As the lefties have one, we need one too.

I have everything crossed for them to win, by however small a margin, and red wine and arsenic ready in case they lose...

I daren't stay up as my nerves can't take it. I just desperately want to wake up to a Conservative government tomorrow morning.

Lefties, please don't intrude. I have deliberately started this thread so as not to pester you on your anxious thread. It feels mean and unnecessary to tell you why you are wrong on your own thread.

Why the anxiety? The Lib Dems don't want to work with Labour. Now it's all down to DC.

Cartoose · 07/05/2010 11:07

Oohh, just saw this on BBC. Looks like NC is backing the Cons

BeenBeta · 07/05/2010 11:11

The Trident nuclear missiles are on board our 4 nuclear submarines. They are our only intercontinental strategic nuclear weapon.

They need to be replaced at great cost. Lib Dems want to get rid of them but seem unsure whether they want total UK nuclear disarmament or a more limited cheaper tactical nuclear weapon force.

booyhoo · 07/05/2010 11:13

thank you beenbeta

i have heard OH (navy) talk about those submarines but didn't know trident was the name for it.

ASecretLemonadeDrinkerDAVE · 07/05/2010 11:14

Trident is a nuclear detterant, needs updating as it's kinda old now. Expensive, yes, but scrapping is not an option IMO, as much as we would all love world peace and what not, it's stopping our arses getting nuked.

how many more seats are there still to be announced?

wigmorewondermum · 07/05/2010 11:20

hello everyone lets look at the bigger picture - best blue option is a coalition govt to pass all the austerity packages that this country will need then in next election blues storm to victory with no one blaming them for it all

can't believe gb walked into downing street today hopefully it was to pack his bags!

QueenofDreams · 07/05/2010 11:21

Hi ladies. nice to see a tory thread, so sick of all the rabid lefty tory bashing on here!
DP and I both voted COnservative yesterday. But we're in an area that's pretty conservative anyway.
Love the way Labour has changed about constituencies. Viva gerrymandering

Cartoose · 07/05/2010 11:26

" best blue option is a coalition govt to pass all the austerity packages that this country will need then in next election blues storm to victory with no one blaming them for it all"

Yes, this is the ultimate, and may just well happen

Welcome to the bluuuuue thread QofD

skihorse · 07/05/2010 11:27

wigmore I fear for any ashtrays in his path.

Cartoose · 07/05/2010 11:32

C'mon Gord, get out ... you know you really want to write that tell all book. Retirement can be nice.

wigmorewondermum · 07/05/2010 11:39

bbc saying dc will make a statement at 230pm

booyhoo · 07/05/2010 11:39

ok so let me get this straight. point out where i am wrong everyone.

best scenario is lib dems support tories and form a minority govt then GE held asap where cons will win majority?

so in order for this to happen GB needs to resign?

TiggyR · 07/05/2010 11:41

I tried to keep abreast of things via all night radio 4, and sleep (fitfully) at the same time (didn't exactly work!) just made me strangely stressed and anxious and suddenly rather depressed about the state of the nation generally. Eventually turned the radio off about 3am as it was clearly not going to be conclusive so no point in depriving myself of proper sleep any longer!

I think ultimately DC will be PM but I don't think it's going to be pleasant or satisfactory for anyone, least of all him!
But I'm hugely relieved that in all probability GB won't be able to continue spending his way into an even deeper hole in which to stick his ostrich-head. What a dog's dinner, eh? At least with a coalition/pact of some sort all the unavoidable crap over the next few years won't be heaped onto one person's head! It's bound to end in another GE fairly soon, though, but TBH, who'd want this poisoned chalice anyway?

BeenBeta · 07/05/2010 11:44

If DC gets into power with LibDem support I do think that at the very least the built in Labour majority has to be cut down by reforming seat boundaries. Seats with a smaller than average umber of constituents (almost all Labour) have to be cut up and merged into neighbouring seats.

That at least would be a step to better and fairer representation.

Cartoose · 07/05/2010 11:45

If LibDems side with cons (who do have a majority, however slight) Gordon will have to resign, booyhoo.

booyhoo · 07/05/2010 11:45

just watching the reel going across bottom of bbc, labour lost a hug amount of seats to cons. how on earth can they deny the public voice?

booyhoo · 07/05/2010 11:46

thanks cartoose

Alibabaandthe40tories · 07/05/2010 11:54

Morning everyone. Had about 4 hours sleep while DH looked after DS, DH is off to bed in a minute!

Was really hoping for a better picture.

Now there is talk on the BBC about 'senior' Tories coming out somehow in opposition to a Con/Lib agreement if I'm understanding it correctly.

BeenBeta · 07/05/2010 11:58

Very interesting discussion on Political Betting about Cameron possibly may offer Clegg a PR election system for the House of Lords and retaining the current system in the House of Commons. I think Clegg would surely go for that. The House of Lords is a much more independent anyway and as a scrutinising body I think PR might well be a very good thing.

Cartoose · 07/05/2010 12:05

Sounds good. I just hope this doesn't take weeks and weeks of negotiation. Terrible for the economy with everything up in the air for so long.

Cartoose · 07/05/2010 12:08

Good morning Alibabaa

That sounds a bit odd re senior Tories ... surely this is the best of a bad situation. And what else do they propose?

Alibabaandthe40tories · 07/05/2010 12:10

That would be a very good thing indeed, surely that would be a huge step forward for electoral reform?

And boundries to be redrawn in some Commons seats to remove the Labour bias.
