Watch out folks, you heard it here first. My husband is a senior economist and is seriously seriously worried about what's about to happen. We need to do all we can to avert a major economical disaster. GB has got us here, do not let him take us further into crisis.

Goodness - I get that too. The sudden fear that I'll squander my share of democracy and put my cross in the wrong box.

atlantis · 05/05/2010 22:08

"But your Medusa reference worries me - that would be quite a scary riot. Are you the Greek that will riot in the UK? "

The only Greek that I can see rioting in the UK will be Stavros if they shut down the airlines due to 'ash' again.

Maybe Prince Phillip if he can't go on a fox hunt.

OrmRenewed · 05/05/2010 22:09

Would it be like the Chinese State Circus, or the Russian ballet?

Habbibu · 05/05/2010 22:09

Now that would be a riot worth watching, Atlantis.

atlantis · 05/05/2010 22:10

"If we get Greek riots will we get the Greek army? I saw them once in Athens - they look like this. It would cheer us all up - especially Atlantis "

I want a pair of those shoes !!

OrmRenewed · 05/05/2010 22:10

Perhaps it would be a special CHristmas treat.

MrsSchadenfreude · 05/05/2010 22:10

I think Portugal, Italy, Ireland and Spain will go before us (the PIIGS!). We are nowhere as near shit creek as they are.

Where does your husband work? I haven't noticed any panic or histrionics where I work, yet.

Habbibu · 05/05/2010 22:11

The one economist on the MPC who predicted all this worked in the university I've recently left. You'd think they'd have capitalised on this, but no.

ShowOfHands · 05/05/2010 22:12

My cousin's Greek. He'll riot for a bit but he's got a lot on at work so probably can't commit to anything beyond his lunchbreak. And he'll need to squeeze in a cheese sandwich too. About 20 minutes?

NathanBarley · 05/05/2010 22:12

lol at conservative "scare the proles" story.

Don't they know we fucking love a good riot

Habbibu · 05/05/2010 22:12

Those shoes would be hell on your blisters, atlantis.

weegiemum · 05/05/2010 22:13

Oh goody! I haven't rioted since the Poll Tax!!

OrmRenewed · 05/05/2010 22:15

I was also a student in the Thatcher years weegie. But was always too repressed to riot. I used to carry gramatically correct banners and look a bit aggreived. I even gave a policeman a hard stare at the picket line at Merthyr colliery. Oh yes...

onagar · 05/05/2010 22:16

Oh god really? Going out to vote labour right now. I love riots

NathanBarley · 05/05/2010 22:20

Whereas Dave and his boys prefer their scuffles within the confines of, say, a restaurant while wearing black tie before using daddy's money to pay for the damage.

atlantis · 05/05/2010 22:20

"Those shoes would be hell on your blisters, atlantis. "

Yes but my cats would love the pom poms.

Feet= blisters= shoes= pom poms= cats= claws= lance blisters= healing process...

atlantis · 05/05/2010 22:21

"Whereas Dave and his boys prefer their scuffles within the confines of, say, a restaurant while wearing black tie before using daddy's money to pay for the damage. "

I take cleggy boy was also at said table with other said toffs?

Hassled · 05/05/2010 22:23

I went on a Miner's solidarity march once. I was never really sure why. It would have been so much better with some feta and the Greek army.

animula · 05/05/2010 22:26

weegiemum - I was at the poll tax riot too!

I met up with some friends, and we went for a cup of tea at someone's house, then ambled back for a spot more rioting.

Though I don't recall us doing anything more than pottering about. Suspect it may have qualified more as tourism of the revolution. Or sight-seeing. Or something.

[Happy memories]

weegiemum · 05/05/2010 22:27

I was a scarey student.

I went on Reclaim the Night marches and Poll Tax marches and rioted in Glasgow and campaigned for just about everything - picketed the Union about Nestle and South African products (still have my "Free Nelson Mandela" T-shirt and badge).

Almost got thrown out of the Christian Union for being "too political".

No wonder I got a 2:2!

(My father knows NONE of this!)

NathanBarley · 05/05/2010 22:28

Erm no Atlantis, Clegg went to Cambridge didn't he, not oxford. What do you mean?

SpringHeeledJack · 05/05/2010 22:29

The poll tax riot is still one of my top ten days out ever. The Reclaim the Streets one in Trafalgar Square was a hoot as well

Now I come to think of it, rioting has been a bit poor under NuLab- bit of a niche activity. Whatever else you can say about the Tories, they certainly brought it to the mainstream

donnie · 05/05/2010 22:30

yes and don't forget the obligatory plate smashing to end the evening Hassled!

Pissed off that someone else beat me to it with the Kaiser Chief joke!

maybe the volcanic ash will stop all those furious Greek peeps from transporting their riotous ways over here? I blame the effing EU if they do make it to Blighty's shores. Get a sodding visa whydoncha!

atlantis · 05/05/2010 22:31

Well I never rioted against the poll tax (being a good conservative and all) but I did many a 'protest' outside the south african embassy against apartheid (and you say conservatives are uncaring )< blows raspberries at lefties>.
