...on the grounds that if we assume there will be a Tory govt, then the crowing triumphalism of all the Chinless Wonders and Thrusting Monetarists and Nasty Racists who'll poke in here to crow and gloat, will somehow force a cosmic rift in the time-space continuum. And it will be like 1992 all over again but the other way round.

I fear the best we can hope for is a hung parliament.

I've suggested hemlock for the Election Night supper thread...

oh god god god i had such hopes of reform so we'd never have to have a Tory again. We won't get another chance. The millionaires are all singing I suppose.

I've never fathomed why people who are not rich themselves would vote for a Tory. I mean, the Republicans pull it off because of guns and abortion, but you'd think the British would be less easily distracted. But all they have to do is promise to duff up some foreigners and single mothers and they get the votes. I do sometimes wonder whether democracy would ever have been allowed to endure if it did not work for the rich.

It's ironic that Iraq put people off Labour so much and yet it was the Tories who backed Blair to get it through the Commons. So now we get the endless threats to withdraw from the EU (but never the balls to actually do it) and promises to join Nafta. Who after all would want to be at the centre of Europe when we can beg crumbs off the American table.

Oh god.

tsetse · 05/05/2010 22:19

Ewe is for the redistribution of wealth, which is not unreasonable but, first, you need the wealth to redistribute.
It certainly was not being redistributed to the cleaners in Whitehall under the ex Chancellor of the Exchequer and First Lord of the Treasury!!!

EweStupidToryVoters · 05/05/2010 22:19

justa, you should vote for him I think. I don't particularly like him but the Tories have spent so much money in his constituency it would really piss them off

TDiddy · 05/05/2010 22:21

Yes LeninGrad- think that you need to find the fun and positivity in the situation.

I also did a bit of currency trading to provide an emotional hedge to my political investment. A bit like betting on a Tory win.

Markets seem to be thinking that Cameron will get a majority at present.

Hey notice that they kept George Osbourn's profile low in the campaign?www.mumsnet.com/images/buttons/post_message.gif

donnie · 05/05/2010 22:22

that Gary Younge article pretty much sums up my sentiments and reminds me of how crucial it is that we do not let the Tories back in.

This thread is great btw (and much needed)!

TDiddy · 05/05/2010 22:25

Leafletting my street on a warm spring evening, was really great altho' i was alone. I could hear the birds, smell the vegetation and got to peek into so many front doors. Came back home thinking that I only now know where I live.

atlantis · 05/05/2010 22:27

"Hey notice that they kept George Osbourn's profile low in the campaign?"

Not if your a Tory they didn't, had a very nice email from him today, and one three days ago.

One from Hague yesterday and one from my local MP (tory) yesterday and one from Cameron a few days ago.

EweStupidToryVoters · 05/05/2010 22:28

We're in the top 10 richest countries in the world tsetse... I think we're managing, despite the recession We have a relatively low debt to GDP ratio (despite what the press trot out, we're really not comparable to Greece!) and we have never defaulted on debt. Labour are at least focusing spending on people who need it, not a tax break to millionaires.

Brown has also pledged to implement a living wage in Whitehall vs Cameron who has said he will "examine" it.

TDiddy · 05/05/2010 22:32

Wilfsell, think that your name is really cool BTW. Wish i had thought of it. Must start a thread on "MN name envy".

Animula- yes, the strategy for canvassing these days seems to be about how many people you have contact with, however brief; but also quickly establishing who they would vote for. So it is not about converting people as much about knowing who would vote for you and then getting your vote out.

TDiddy · 05/05/2010 22:36

EweStupidToryVoters- you are correct. And buy the way, a bit of inflation and/or exchange rate adjustment will erode the nationa debt - starting happen already. We just have to stop the debt worsening.

Smilehighclub · 05/05/2010 22:38

really is there no chance for GB? god I can't believe that we're crashing headlong into Torydom. fuck me.

TDiddy · 05/05/2010 22:38

night night comrades...got to get some sleep for tmmrw.

EweStupidToryVoters · 05/05/2010 22:40

Night Diddy - if only we published the daily papers and we wouldn't be in this mess

Good night. [waves]

loungelizard · 05/05/2010 22:47

Coming a bit late to this thread but am with you all the way.

Yes, I've noticed George Osborne has been kept out of the limelight until today, when he appeared on the lunchtime news, and naturally he mentioned keepng his sleeves rolled up.

He's definitely a bit strange.

Simply cannot bear the thought of the Tories in power on Friday.

Hopefully, they won't be...

omnimandles · 05/05/2010 22:49

I have already seen one unbearable piece of Tory smuggery on here this evening - only a moment ago in fact.

Its so very depressing...

RosaMolesworthemburg · 05/05/2010 22:50

Oh god, that Guardian/ICM poll has plunged me into a vortex of despair

EweStupidToryVoters · 05/05/2010 22:50

Newsnight apparently mentioned that the Tories may make Nadine Dorries Home Sec I thought Grayling was bad...

vesela · 05/05/2010 22:58

yes, canvassing is meant to be just surveying people (and answering their questions if they ask any, but they usually don't). I sometimes wonder if people then think: wow, she was weedy, she didn't even try!

EweStupidToryVoters · 05/05/2010 22:59

Oh no! I know I shouldn't expect much more from the Sun but SERIOUSLY!?!?!?

RosaMolesworthemburg · 05/05/2010 22:59

I literally feel like rolling up my sleeves and crying.

Let's pray for another 1992 shocker

EweStupidToryVoters · 05/05/2010 23:00

They are all pretty bad to be fair - some balance in the press would really be quite delightful.
