I am a tabula rasa.
Does anyone want to persuade me?

If I voted for canvassers I'd be voting for the BNP as they are the only ones who bothered coming and even I am not unitelligent enough to do that.

I'm thinking Lib Dem, so my nest question is is about wasted votes. Iirc from when I had no choice but listen about politics... The numbers of seats given is in direct correlation with number of votes that party recieved yes? And the party with the most seats are in charge, but other parties still get a say normally via voting etc, so the more seats they have the more of a say they have.

So why is Lib Dem a wasted vote? Surely the more voters they get the more seats they have, thus more influence over the way the country is run?

wastwinsetandpearls · 07/04/2010 14:54

You are right and wrong. The number of votes does not correlate to the number of seats in parliament. But if the liberal democrat candidate gets the most votes in your constituency he will get a seat in parliament. So yes the more people who vote Lib Dem the more power they will have in parliament.

Simon Hughes admitted yesterday on Newsnight that they were unlikely to win the election but it has not put me off voting.

In my area it is only worth voting Lib Dem as labour only got 8% last time and I imagine even less people will vote labour this time. The Lib Dem and tory votes will go up nationally and the Labour decrease. I will be fascinated to see how many seats Lib Dems get

SuSylvester · 07/04/2010 15:42

oh no shiny

can we rewrite rules on canvassing?

OP posts:
tiredemma · 07/04/2010 16:06

here is my predicament-

I want to vote for the Labour Party. I DO NOT want to vote for my local Labour MP. He is a vile, money grabbing, over inflated ego wazzock.

I cant vote labour without voting him can I??

SuSylvester · 07/04/2010 16:07

no

pity though

OP posts:
wastwinsetandpearls · 07/04/2010 16:17

No I am intrigued as to who your MP is tiredemma

boobiewickham · 07/04/2010 16:17

Oh god!

I came out as 45 per cent conservative!

I must have done it wrong!

Granny23 · 07/04/2010 16:19

Please check out John Harris' election tour in the Guardian. Not because it will help you decide but because I AM IN IT. Not talking (I must, as usual, be on the cutting room floor) but grinning broadly & wearing a yellow and black scarf.

FlyMeToDunoon · 07/04/2010 16:21

Hell I didn't know who to vote for either and that survey thing has me at roughly a third each.
Might do Lib Dem as Labour Never get in here and parties like Green don't even put up candidates.

champagnesupernova · 07/04/2010 16:32

LOLOL at tabula rasa and the Thompson Twins
Vote for ME Su!

(In a previous life I once went to a conservative breakfast. For the bacon rolls and to stalk get an interview with someone. Someone at the coffee said "have you ever thought about running?" and I said "Oh no, I don't really do exercise.")

careaboutcruelty · 07/04/2010 16:51

Confused ? If you care about cruelty, if you care about the vulnerable being viciously attacked for fun, you won't be when you find out about the Tories position on bloodsports. They love them.

Specifically hunting with hounds, where they've promised to repeal the long overdue, highly popular and hard-fought for Hunting Act 2004.

Cameron is a former fox hunter [and loves shooting deer] . His first firm policy pledge when he became leader was to repeal the Hunting Act. He's huge friends with the Heythrop hunt in his constituency, several of whom not only gave large amounts to his leadership campaign but have made huge donations to the Tory Party. His friend and shadow Environment Secretary, Nick Herbert, is a former avid hare hunter and high up in the Countryside [i.e. bloodsports] Alliance. Almost all Tory sitting MPs and candidates in winnable seats are pro-hunting.

Thousands of hunters are bussing in to campaign in marginals occupied by anti-hunt MPs or candidates, but they've been told not to bring up hunting on the doorstep because it's so unpopular.

A few months ago the hunters got upset when Cameron hinted repeal might be via a private members Bill and the Tories rapidly caved in and said it would be a government Bill.

They want to return to the legalised barbarity of allowing gangs of their friends with large packs of trained killer dogs to roam round the countryside chasing terrified animals for as long as possible [this gives good 'sport] - hares & foxes up to 90 minutes, deer up to 7 hours. For fun.
It's nothing to do with 'pest control', however much they like to pretend it is.

Do you really want to vote for people who enjoy and support such atrocities? Who like hearing a hare scream pitifully when it is eventually caught by the pack, seeing one literally torn apart by greyhounds in coursing, a deer calf whipped away from its mother so they can chase and slaughter the adult for fun, young foxes coralled in a wood while the hounds are set upon them in 'cubbing'. 'People' who relish chasing and tearing apart pregnant or nursing vixens in late winter, perhaps leaving the infant cubs to starve to death?

Do you want that sort of person running the country and having power over poor and vulnerable people as well as animals? If not, then DON'T VOTE FOR CAMERON AND CRUEL TORIES

'Compassionate' Conservatism?? Pull the other one, Mr. Cameron, it's got hunting horns on.

Zuma75 · 07/04/2010 16:58

I think that everyone should vote for the party with the most letters in its name, it's the only fair system to ensure the best people are running the country. So Labour only has six letters, Conservative has twelve, Liberal Democrats has.. er... sixteen, and the British National Party has.... twenty.

I'm not saying we should all vote BNP, but seeing as it has the most letters in the name then the evidence does tend to look like they would do the best job when it comes to looking after our children. For instance because they're against immigration, our kids wouldn't be able to catch any diseases. And their policy on whites-only classrooms mean less confusion for the little ones. I mean how many times have you had to have that awkward conversation after hearing "Why is that boy's face a different colour than mine?" I know whenever I ask that question a lot of people feel very awkward anyway.

mumblechum · 07/04/2010 17:08

Arf at Zuma. Phew, at last I know who to vote for!

lincstash · 07/04/2010 17:15

Why you need to be mentally retarded to vote Labour:

A few years ago, Labour's three terms merely seemed a historic missed opportunity. Today, it is plain that the party has delivered a catastrophe.

Blair and Brown - for as Labour's Chancellor he wielded more power than any predecessor - took office in 1997, on the eve of a protracted boom which gave the Government billions of our tax money to spend on remaking a Britain fit for the 21st century.

Sure enough, they have spent. Cash has poured into hospitals and schools, tax credits for the poor, the Millennium Dome, accessible arts for the masses, devolution for Scotland and Wales, health and safety nannyism for all, a tsunami of regulation and 600,000 new state jobs - real and invented - for Labour supporters and clients.

State workers' pay has been boosted so dramatically that it has overtaken the private sector. Blair was re-elected twice because none of this largesse seemed to hurt anyone.

Most of the country felt well-off, and Brown's stealth taxes were skilfully contrived to ensure that pain was felt only slowly.

But gradually the smoke and dust has cleared from the great social building site of Labour Britain.

We see that, for all the billions lavished on health, patients have profited less than doctors, nurses, drug companies and bureaucrats. The rail system has suffered partial re-nationalisation.

Brown's flagship tax credits have proved a bonanza for fraudsters, but created few real jobs and done nothing to narrow the poverty gap.

Private finance initiatives have dramatically increased Exchequer liabilities, while hiding the cost from the official debt figures.

Torrents of taxpayers' money have yielded nothing but deterioration in schools and universities. Millions more children receive top exam grades. Graduates are showered with first-class honours.

The exam system has been shamelessly skewed to provide passes for even semi-literate teenagers.

Most of the country understands the huge deceit at the heart of New Labour. Blair, Brown, Peter Mandelson and Alastair Campbell were not in the business of solving problems or raising standards. Labour never discovered how to get real things done. All they did was spin, lie and cheat.

The fact that you have Peter mandelson standing there with Gordon Brown is on its own a reason not to vote Labour. Mandelson is part of this government, yet hes totally unelected!! Furthermore, hes a proven liar, a cheat, and man who's primary purpose is to line his own pocket, and in doing that he is in a class of his own.

His secondary purpose is to promote the EU, even if its not in the interests of this country, because thats mainly how he lines his own pocket. And lets not forget, this slimy immoral liar and crook has been thrown out of public office TWICE for lying and cheating. He must not be allowed near public money or office ever again? Why would you WANT to vote for him - and if you vote Labour, you get Mandelson!!!

Hi Tabula, that's a really nice name. Where is it from? Sounds Mediterranean, or maybe Jewish. We might call our next child Tabula.

I did that online thingy and came out as 35% Tory, my Mother will be delirious with pride.

Thing is, since we last voted our situations have changed, and if the Tories got in it could seriously hamper DH's our earning potential/pension etc.

Sooo, while I want to protect kittens, I also want to make sure we can eat and afford a holiday home.

Hmmmm, what to do???
