What do with think will be in Labour’s budget?

They don’t seem to be giving much away but any indication that they might help kickstart the economy or are we just going to get £2 bus fares, £45 off our elec bill a year and petrol prices on google map? None of Labour polices seem to help anyone that is really struggling but isn’t in receipt of UC! I’m speaking as a single mother who is trying to sell a property to move on with my life but can’t. Yes I know I’ve very fortunate to have bricks and mortar but that doesn’t mean I’m loaded (because the property isn’t worth much)! I feel like everyone is expecting the chancellor pull a rabbit out of a hat but I think we’ll all be very disappointed/pissed off!

Never have. Have always found a job. Because I’m not picky and have a good work ethic.

Good luck now.

if you work hard and can’t afford to live - that’s a problem. If you choose not to work, abuse the system and complain you can’t go on holiday that’s on you!

Agree. Fine with UC top ups for full time working people. Not fine with Tony ‘out of work for 8 years on UC due to anxiety’

Good luck now.

You don’t need luck. You need a work ethic and an open mind as to what work you take.

No, you don’t. You need to make yourself employable and not be picky about the kind of work you do. Luck doesn’t come into it. There are hundreds of thousands of unfilled vacancies out there. There are several in our village alone that are long term empty. Lots of people on UC though. It’s pure laziness and entitlement in 80% of cases

Catsandcheese · 13/10/2026 13:11

tenpairsofshoes · 13/10/2026 13:04

@Catsandcheesewhy is it hardworking people
s problems to always sort out! Why can’t the people who decide to have children bring them up to want to work? You can’t break the vicious cycle if it just keep repeating itself. If you’re born into family that doesn’t work and claims UC you’ll likely do the same!

i don’t think you are wrong that people brought up on benefits are possibly more likely to end up on them, so as a society we have a responsibility to educate our young people and get them to strive to have a better life than the generation before them. Stopping their benefits will not do that, it will just sow resentment, and create more problems.
i don’t think you can just stop benefits without investing in infrastructure and education, vocational qualifications, sure start centres etc etc.

it is not hardworking people’s problem to sort out, it is the problem the government has to sort out, and of course all those years of Tory mismanagement is a lot to unpick.

ExtraHotDoubleShot · 13/10/2026 13:06

And no, they don’t matter. In the same way we don’t matter to them and they prioritise themselves. They don’t think about Gemma dragging herself out at 6am every day to work as a carer, so why should we give a shit about them. Not my problem

Exactly this! They genuinely are insanely selfish people (not the disabled or those on top ups) the utter chancers - the ones who think they’re owed something! Yet those of us scraping by are being shafted and made to feel guilty that we aren’t caring about them. Who I do feel sorry for is their children born into the same cycle of no ambition, UC claiming selfishness!

So the people for whom benefits should be stopped because they’re a lifestyle choice, what do you all suggest they do? If they’ve sat around their whole lives so far, smoking, drinking, amounting to nothing, who will employ them now? And pay them enough to live/eat etc?
Or do they just not matter?

That's up to them. I think lots of people would love to not have the stress of work and sit around all day. But they don't. They're too busy paying not only for their own home, bills and food but other people's too. It is utter madness.

Walkingthroughautumn · 13/10/2026 13:13

Exactly. I work despite disability/chronic illness. I carried on working despite disability even when I was a single mum. I dont see why I should subsidise people to make a lifestyle choice to live on benefits. They should be a safety net for people who genuinely cannot work /genuinely cannot find any job

Edited to add - there are still many many days when all I can manage after a day at work is to crawl into bed.

Yep. Don’t get me started on the madness where a couple each claim carers allowance for the other one 🫠 do they think we were born yesterday.

If the system is so disjointed that it allows this to happen (I don’t believe it does) bloody good luck to them. Probably one claims carers’ pittance allowance and the other attendance allowance.

Why do not believe this happens? What do you think the requirements are to claim UC?

nomoreforks · 13/10/2026 13:19

I guess in the words of the Labour minister 'who else can we tax to pay benefits'. I hope the budget supports small businesses and also does something to encourage businesses to employ extra people. DD is doing a Gap Year. Applied for hundreds of jobs - now has a portfolio of very casual jobs and is enjoying it. Works for her as she will go travelling in a few months. If you were a young person looking for a permanent job with prospects then I think that I would be feeling very bleak indeed. I wonder if Labour will look at raising CGT. I have a few friends who are already planning to leave the UK if it goes too high. People with money are highly mobile and I guess the rest of us will be left to pay even more.

You weren’t talking about universal credit. Do you seriously think two claims for carers’ allowance from the same address wouldn’t be picked up? As you say, we weren’t born yesterday.

Kirbert2 · 13/10/2026 13:21

Carers allowance is taken pound for pound from UC in any case.

Yes that’s a pretty accurate summary. Who else can they tax to pay benefits. So depressing

Yeh that line sums up Labour so far. On the budget probably not much.

They have another big hole to fill, £35bn latest - IFS. But they’ll probably try to kick stuff into the long grass.

How well did your theory work out for the Tories ?

I would have thought 14 years of Torry rule should have seen a UK that was totally booming. A land of milk and honey.

The previous Tory government taxed too much.

The evidence of your own eyes is anecdata. The rest of your links suggest that the reason Muslims struggle with unemployment and poverty is prejudice and discrimination. The solution to this is for people to stop being prejudiced and discriminatory, not to bring in policies that will make things worse for that group.

Saying that Muslim families have more children than Causcasion families isn't being predjudiced, it's fact.
In Western Europe and North America, Muslim immigrants and second-generation families often start with higher fertility rates than the local population, but these rates tend to converge downward toward regional norms over time as generations adapt. For instance, data from the Office for National Statistics shows that a higher proportion of Muslim households in England and Wales have three or more children compared to the general population, shaped in part by younger age profiles and specific socioeconomic factors.

I agree.
Dozens of jobs advertised in the local job centre/on-line agency.

What? Your title doesn’t make sense!

dustabsorber · 13/10/2026 14:02

Surely, it's a Muslim woman's choice to wear a hijab. If that's impacting her job prospects, surely she needs to reconsider. Suppose I tuned up at Job Centre plus with a bin over my head and told them that I believed Count Binface was God's representative on earth and that it was an article of my faith that I wear a bin over my head, would they accept that? Would they let me go to interviews with a bin over my head?

Hijab fine, face covering not fine. Then again I’ve never seen a woman with full face covering in work. Coincidence maybe
