What do with think will be in Labour’s budget?

They don’t seem to be giving much away but any indication that they might help kickstart the economy or are we just going to get £2 bus fares, £45 off our elec bill a year and petrol prices on google map? None of Labour polices seem to help anyone that is really struggling but isn’t in receipt of UC! I’m speaking as a single mother who is trying to sell a property to move on with my life but can’t. Yes I know I’ve very fortunate to have bricks and mortar but that doesn’t mean I’m loaded (because the property isn’t worth much)! I feel like everyone is expecting the chancellor pull a rabbit out of a hat but I think we’ll all be very disappointed/pissed off!

Most people on UC aren't in work.

38% isn’t insignificant.

Any idea how long probate takes - obviously not ?

Yes, for both my mother and mother in law, probate was obtained within a couple of weeks of application (online) being submitted and both their properties were sold within six months of them dying. That was WITH a couple of banks (Halifax and Post Office) being utterly stupid and delaying the probate application for no reason other than their incompetence.

These days, it's only the estates liable to IHT or which are otherwise complicated where probate takes a lot longer, usually because of errors/omissions in the probate application.

Yes, "some" estates take a long time to go through probate, but the vast majority don't.

62% is still MOST as I said.

And many of the 38% will only be working part time.

Exactly. Unlikely anyway, there are always lots of applications for rental property unless it’s a shithole.

Another area it seems you have no knowledge about.
There is an optimum rent that can be charged that is both fair to the tenants and covers the costs of the owner.

That's a load of rollocks. No-one wants to rent in an area that is rural and has no amenities.

How many of that 62 per cent will ever work?

dustabsorber · 13/10/2026 12:28

I used to be left leaning, but mass immigration has shifted me towards the right because how can we solve poverty by importing more poverty?

This is where I am.

Policy can always be undone. Importing people and giving them full citizenship, not so much.

Less than half. We urgently need to stop giving people benefits when they leave school. The majority are lifelong claimants who have sat around all day developing addiction/MH/health problems and now they’re virtually unemployable.

I used to work in healthcare and have the evidence of my own eyes,

Plus - https://committees.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/106165/html/

and this explains why Muslim women have problems with employment

link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12147-026-09427-6

The evidence of your own eyes is anecdata. The rest of your links suggest that the reason Muslims struggle with unemployment and poverty is prejudice and discrimination. The solution to this is for people to stop being prejudiced and discriminatory, not to bring in policies that will make things worse for that group.

Same.

As has the Great Big Benefits Handout.

I wouldn't begrudge taxes so much if I felt they were going to people who genuinely had no other choice. But I cannot tolerate paying for someone else's lifestyle choice.

Agree and it IS happening no matter how much others insist it isn’t.

Nail on the head. We need to find ways to get people working again. It's madness to subsidise a lazy lifestyle that is well known to increase the likelihood of substance abuse, crime, anti social behaviour, etc.

I still optimistic that AB might be able to deliver.

But I am finding his desire to churn out tiny little announcements about trivia in a bid for "good news" really patronising. It all feels very tinkering around the edges and I realise his options may be limited but it makes me feel patronised when he thinks a Google maps list of petrol prices is remotely something I want a PM to be concerning himself with

It's the big systemic fixes I want to see discussed, even if they can't happen straight away.

Agree with the tiny little announcements being super annoying - to the point it cancels out the benefit.

Especially the bus fares when he fails to mention it was a Labour government under Starmer and Reeves who raised them from £2 to £3 in the first place.

the80sweregreat · 13/10/2026 12:55

Yep, the buses around our way are 2.50 one way and if it’s a short journey it’s a lot to find. We seem to have missed out on the 2 pound journeys somehow.
The bus prices did go up under Labour originally , but that has been forgotten.

tenpairsofshoes · 13/10/2026 12:55

@dustabsorbersame, I voted Labour but don’t think I will anymore!

@ExtraHotDoubleShotit boils my piss when people say it isn’t happening because it bloody well is! That’s not to say there isn’t many people who are on benefits and genuinely need them, but thanks to the drains on society they are worse off and tarred with the same brush! Funny these people can’t work, but know exactly how to work the benefits system when they need to!

I think they think it isn’t happening because, to them, the ‘why should I travel 30 mins to get to work?’ ‘Why should my child miss out on spending their first 4 years with me?’ ‘Why shouldn’t benefit claimants go on holiday?’ are all valid excuses.

Whereas to those of us that work and do the above (and don’t get holidays!), they’re not valid excuses.

In short they don’t realise how lazy they actually are and how many people are in their position and still drag their arse to work.

Catsandcheese · 13/10/2026 13:01

So the people for whom benefits should be stopped because they’re a lifestyle choice, what do you all suggest they do? If they’ve sat around their whole lives so far, smoking, drinking, amounting to nothing, who will employ them now? And pay them enough to live/eat etc?
Or do they just not matter?

Not our problem

Suggest they do whatever we would do if made redundant

You’d be claiming benefits. It would soon be your problem when starving, homeless people burgled your house.

tenpairsofshoes · 13/10/2026 13:04

@Catsandcheesewhy is it hardworking people
s problems to always sort out! Why can’t the people who decide to have children bring them up to want to work? You can’t break the vicious cycle if it just keep repeating itself. If you’re born into family that doesn’t work and claims UC you’ll likely do the same!

Never have. Have always found a job. Because I’m not picky and have a good work ethic.

tenpairsofshoes · 13/10/2026 13:06

if you work hard and can’t afford to live - that’s a problem. If you choose not to work, abuse the system and complain you can’t go on holiday that’s on you!

And no, they don’t matter. In the same way we don’t matter to them and they prioritise themselves. They don’t think about Gemma dragging herself out at 6am every day to work as a carer, so why should we give a shit about them. Not my problem

notanothernamesurely · 13/10/2026 13:06

Little bits of not a lot is what I think will be in the budget. That sees those who are not on benefits but who are not high earners being shafted a bit more.
