When & how will Burnham’s honeymoon come to an end?

Burnham’s leadership has been relatively free of drama, so far, and certainly when compared to his hapless predecessor.

What do we think will represent Burnham’s first real test? The budget, or something else?

Classic.

Search function.

You are familiar with it.

I am indeed familiar with it. I’m surprised you are in such a short time. Quick learner, I guess.

Did you object to the questions that were asked when Conservatives were the ruling party?

With regards to the triple lock and Kemi, she said and I quote: “I have said that the triple lock is our policy and it remains our policy. I don’t think going after pensioners is the right thing when there are loads of people who can work, who won’t work.“I have said that we are keeping this policy, but if they take that money and they spend it on something that we can’t get it back from, then it would be difficult for me.

I would think that the point for her objection would be that the whole benefit system needs to be reformed. Don’t forget Starmer had to U-turn again, when he wanted reform benefits. Kemi offered to work cross party on this. The whole benefit system is unaffordable. So why remove the 2 child cap then penalise pensioners? That seems like point scoring and vote chasing.

I think I know how opposition parties are supposed to work. Thanks for the suggestion but I don’t need to read a book on Why we get the wrong politicians. I don’t agree with having convicted criminals on the front bench that is disgraceful! Many employees have to have a DBS check which should apply to politicians.

Again, no do not agree at all with consensus politics? Are you really advocating that everybody follows the same political philosophy?

So no we will have to agree to disagree, that to me is what debates are about.

I’m not saying you need to read the book, I’m saying if you’re interested in politics, you’d probably find it interesting. I really did.

I don’t like party political point scoring, name calling or mud slinging because I don’t think it leads to good policy. I don’t think that is an especially party political stance. I certainly didn’t like Jeremy Corbyn’s style of opposition, for example. And I have already praised David Cameron’s way of disagreeing on macroeconomics but seeking consensus on, for example, education rather than opposing for opposition’s sake.

When I talk about consensus politics, I definitely don’t mean everyone following the same philosophy. It’s about different parties finding common ground on big, long-term issues so the country isn't constantly hitting the reset button every time power changes hands. From what I understand, it works well in places like Switzerland and Denmark, because it means policy survives the election cycles.

But of course we can agree to disagree and I appreciate you giving such a detailed, thought- through perspective.

Such an odd obsession with Reform.

It's funny how those who seem obsessed with Starmer who is no longer a politician, and Rayner because she is a successful woman, spend more time looking for opportunities to attack people who comment on an actual politician who is giving the official opposition leader a run for their money.
I agree, some posters particularly on this thread, don't seem to have any self awareness and seem more intent on attacking posters than debating issues in good faith. That is more indicative of their lack of awareness of behavioural norms.

My point was about Farage’s rhetoric being far more divisive than any other politician’s and it therefore seeming odd to me that in talking about sewing division and fuelling polarisation you would single out Reeves and Starmer in particular, when they are clearly far from the worst culprits in that regard. It doesn’t seem massively controversial to me to say that the most divisive politician of current times is Nigel Farage - Kemi Badenoch herself said in her (very strong) conference speech that the kind of hate he peddles in has no place in our politics, and many centrist and centre right voters were glad to hear it.

On Brexit, it is not inevitable that a discussion about our future relationship with Europe is toxic and divisive - it is up to us to choose the tone in which we discuss any controversial politic issue. But I have to say, calling the Prime Minister a weather vane or a people pleaser or a u-turner or whatever else for opening the door to a serious debate about the best deal for our economy doesn’t seem a great way to start a good faith conversation.

I don’t think so given the public have worked in a way to remove them. They didn’t get that treating the public with contempt would lead to a loss of their jobs.

Ik you or other Labour supporters might not recognise it but thankfully enough did react.

Thats the worst kind of far right extremist misinformation that speaks to the fears of those less well informed.
I utterly disagree with the premise that it is what this government is aiming for.
Hyperbole.

I’m not quite sure what point you’re making. Do you genuinely think Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves were more divisive in their rhetoric and approach than Nigel Farage is in his? Fair enough, if so, but I think a lot of people right across the political spectrum would disagree, including many Conservatives, and indeed Kemi Badenoch who - much to her credit -has come out very strongly in her condemnation of Reform’s divisive rhetoric.

Edited

Badenoch’s conference speech was excellent about racism. I also liked the clear line she drew about not entertaining propping up Reform. That will undoubtedly have drawn a few politically homeless ex Tories back to the party.

If it’s been happening for years how can it be the fault of this government?

Russell Brand has also been frequently praised by Russian state media, because his views are so aligned with the narratives pushed by the Kremlin. No one with any respect for our democracy would be sharing his bile.

Wow. I am aghast that anyone on a site aimed mostly at women would be promoting Brand and his disinformation.

No one has said anything about the trial, apart from that it is happening. We are not not stupid.

Nobody said anything was the Russians’ fault, just that Brand seems to be on the side of the Russians.

Oh bless, assuming I live in a middle class area.
FYI. I really don't. I just don't buy into the hate filled rhetoric coming from an undercurrent of scared white men who like to beat up women and their foreign backers.
