When & how will Burnham’s honeymoon come to an end?

Burnham’s leadership has been relatively free of drama, so far, and certainly when compared to his hapless predecessor.

What do we think will represent Burnham’s first real test? The budget, or something else?

He will try and kick the can down tbe road as much as possible so I don't forsee an exciting Budget. Unfortunately I think his test will be international relations. Maybe an attack on NATO.

lljkk · 03/10/2026 09:45

Surely social care, already the promised tax rises. He'll be accused of being "out of touch" for raising taxes in a cost of living crisis.

it's how the NHS was founded, but never mind that.

Abu Dhabi, if he doesn't keep his beak out.

Probably when devolving power and money to regional councils turns out not to be a great idea because they have no idea how to run a region in all the ways national decision making are necessary and important. Even the devolved nations haven’t pulled it off competently.

I think his statements re Man City and their owners have come across really badly and there have been calls regarding examining his financial involvement.
It's very messy with tax implications and he has really dropped himself in it.
HMRC now involved and Man City owners are now threatening the UK trade re agreements etc if things don't go their way.

Sometimes things like this take others down in its wake.

TaraRhu · 03/10/2026 10:01

I really hope we can just keep him tbh. I'm so fed up of this cycle of just chucking out the prime minister. We need stability. We can just be expecting/ waiting for him to be chucked out. My son has had more prim ministers in his 8 years than I'd had my whole life up until he was born. It's shocking. So yes he will face resistance but Labour need to suck it up and get behind him.

The upcoming diesel crisis is incoming before Christmas. This threatens food - farm equipment uses diesel, deliveries and a&e equipement.

They will blame Trump (and there is a lot of blame to be had there) but we have also not made our country secure by having very little in reserve (30 days compared with 600 days reserve in France and Germany).
We import 33% from the USA.
We have also let our number of refineries dwindle from 18 in the ‘70’s to 4 today.
Industry bodies like Fuels Industry UK point to net zero-linked regulatory costs, specifically the UK Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) carbon taxes, as a primary driver pushing struggling refineries past the point of economic viability.

This will cause an ideological divide between Labour green policy and world realities.

It’s made us much more vulnerable as a country to world wide shortages and many oil plants are under attack in the gulf and Russia, some may take a decade to come back online when they are attacked.

ElanaohElana · 03/10/2026 10:06

Is it a honeymoon or is he just doing a much better job than previous prime ministers at doing things that are actually having a positive impact.

But they agreed they have to solve the worklessness too.

Well, I don’t think he has been properly tested yet - it’s conceivable that when he is, he comes through with flying colours, of course.

Agreed.

Plus I am sick to death of the revolving door at number 10 and people expecting instant results and omelettes without breaking eggs.

That I agree with. Although its a shame we have such a left wing PM if we are to have the same PM for a long period.

I doubt Labour will switch again even if his shine wears off. Who will win the next GE is hard to predict.

Three years until then, unless he lied over not having an early GE.

He hasn’t lied. We don’t know when it’ll be. Perhaps accuse him of that if an election is called before 2029.

The honeymoon is soon over, as now the Cabinet is divided about rejoining the EU.
Burnham has flim-flammed about with that idea just like Starmer used to.

But he did rule it out. He said it himself to ITV.

Yep. Same as I won’t look at Brexit or re-joining said at Makerfield by-election. Empty words there too.

Allegedly. In the absence of any functional opposition gossip about internal divisions is taking its place. The Cabinet will support Burnham regardless, they know when they’re well off.

LuckyHazelFox · 03/10/2026 12:42

Hopefully divorce is looming. Just a shame it's going to be a costly one.

senua · 03/10/2026 12:51

He was an idiot to mention the Brexit / EU question. After it taking a decade to die down, he decided to re-open old wounds.

Also, he's made too many promises, set too many plates spinning. He can't deliver everything so some segment(s) of the population is/are bound to be disappointed in him.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 03/10/2026 12:51

The date of the next election is the least of our worries and his.

Far more pressing - cost of fuel and likely inflation
Cost of government borrowing
Lack of headroom to do much borrowing
Higher taxes will stifle growth
So how to stimulate growth (come back Man City owners - all is forgiven)
Foreign wars we can do nothing about
Left wingers not agreeing to welfare cuts and defence spending
Being calked out on social care when he’s really talking about nhs care. His idea is woefully short of expectations.
Kicking every can down the road!

Many issues are hiding in the wings.

RedRiverShore6 · 03/10/2026 12:55

He does tend to open gob before thinking.

InBristol · 03/10/2026 12:58

I hope he distances himself from the Man City issue asap, or that will be it.

otherwise I hope for a long and happy honeymoon.

Shedmistress · 03/10/2026 13:00

Maybe when he is on stage banging on about 'hope again' whilst simultaneously releasing hundreds of rapists and serial abusers back into the community?
