Suspicious death, suspected murder. Think there is a press conference soon.

Politically she was the polar opposite of everything I believe in but what a horrible way to die. I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy.

IGotHam · 10/07/2026 16:17

It’s on the guardian as well, suspect is a white male. Poor Anne; absolutely shocking.

lordbaddingham · 10/07/2026 16:13

I'll be amazed if this is politically motivated, I suspect it will be someone known to her.

Or maybe a burglary ?

How do you know that she has been "assassinated by a lefty"?

Acknowledging that you were not a fan of her politics while expressing shock at the manner of her death does not in any way endorse her murder. You are talking absolute bullshit and I'm sure you know it.

Who knows what happened yet. Could have been a fall or she could have been attacked. The police will have to investigate and we don’t know the details yet.

What a totally pointless post given what we do know.

Yorkshirelass04 · 10/07/2026 16:19

The UK's Charlie Kirk?

Not disgusting at all. People say that sort of thing often when someone who could be controversial dies. What is disgusting is using her murder to goad others. Nobody knows who killed her or the motive.

100% agree. "By a lefty" I mean, wtf!

Or maybe a burglary ?

I got the vibe the police know or suspect who it is, which would suggest someone known to her rather than a random burglar, but I may be wrong. It could be either.

Fiendishandfiery · 10/07/2026 16:20

It’s like a parallel universe on here. Maybe she wasn’t murdered, eh yeah as the police announce that when there is a chance she just fell. They can’t tell. Or maybe she tried to commit suicide and took something and fell over.

the woman was attacked and murdered, take the police word for it.
Anything else is so disrespectful.

Glowingup · 10/07/2026 16:20

Fgs do people realise that assisted suicide tends to be by drug overdose or maybe smothering? Not whacking someone over the head and leaving them covered in blood. How awful. She was principled and not everyone agreed with her views but she was entitled to have them. She was also a very committed politician who took her role seriously which can’t be said for some of the clowns in parliament at the moment. I doubt very much she had dementia. She also cared for her elderly mother for a long time and lived with her. People I know who have met her said she was kind and funny.

Yes, terrible reaction from some people. It shows how toxic our politics have become. No doubt these LGBT activists cheering her death see themselves as the 'good guys'. RIP.

Trans and trans activists. Let's get it right. Can we not all be lumped in together.

HelenaWaiting · 10/07/2026 16:20

Stella Creasy nailed it:

No one can deny Ann Widdecombe was a towering presence in our politics who fought for what she thought was right with determination and eloquence.
You don’t have to agree with those views to recognise that contribution and feel for those who have lost a friend, as well as be shocked to hear of these developments.

FunStork · 10/07/2026 15:55

I pray that the police have got this wrong and she just fell, and it was all so quick.

But she was hated by far left activists.

Heather Herbert is a former Labour MSP. He and his trans activists friends were crowing about her death this morning.

That's vile. 🤬 What is wrong with people?

YOU don't get to tell people how to post. And if you know who attacked her (you are talking like you do), I suggest you contact Devon & Cornwall police.

I vehemently disagreed with her views, but how utterly horrible to end her life like this. I feel for her family.

lordbaddingham · 10/07/2026 16:21

What is a 'lefty' in your mind @AdultHumanEmail? I'd be interested in your definition.

Eyesopenwideawake · 10/07/2026 15:43

Wow. I can't say I was sorry to hear she'd died but I'd assumed it was natural causes. I hope that's the case.

This is a truly awful thing to say.

AdultHumanEmail · 10/07/2026 16:22

SleeplessInWherever · 10/07/2026 16:16

You know it was a lefty as opposed to any other white man?

If you know who it was, you really should inform the police.

I'm just saying what I've heard from reputable sources.

SerafinasGoose · 10/07/2026 16:22

Can't you? That's sad. I couldn't even be pleased about Margaret Thatcher and I loathed just about everything she stood for.

Widdecombe's politics were not my politics. She's said some things I haven't liked. She had a right to do this and I don't have the right to hear opinions I completely agree with all the time. But my word, did that woman have the courage of her convictions. No one was going to tell her what to think. Some might call it arrogance. As usual, women typically receive more pushback on these things than do men. But I'll say this for her: she maintained the right to her own independence of mind, and she wasn't a populist.

Whatever her political views were and whatever mine might be, I admired her for that.

It's the same as when Maggie Thatcher died.

I made my initial comment about assisted suicide before any police statement about serious injuries, looking for a white male etc and did so in good faith as quite often the police announce a murder investigation if assisted suicide is suspected.

anotherdaytosmile · 10/07/2026 16:23

How odd

SleeplessInWherever · 10/07/2026 16:23

I may not have agreed with her principles, but I did always respect her having them and being so vocal with them.

There’s a lot to be said for strong unwavering women in the public eye, even if their views are the opposite.

At the heart of it, regardless of her politics, a white man has allegedly murdered a 78 year old woman. About as disgusting as it gets.

I think women did like her for exactly this reason. She lived exactly as she wanted, had her opinions, and built a good life. She was remarkably unconventional in a way. Also good humored. She consented to have the piss taken out of her by Victoria Wood for a Christmas special on the BBC. They became friends.
