So the admittedly boring but truly decent PM has announced his resignation and the egotistical, pompous Burnham will doubtless become PM. God help the country

I’m beginning to think that a general election may not be I’m such a bad idea, but that is millions too!

Well that’s what Labour do. They just spend and spend until the pot’s empty.

Still not as rude as yours though.

Labour has made an absolute hash of being in government. Call a general election!

Still people don't get how it works 🙄
Labour won. Get over it. You'll get your chance to vote in a GE when we're next due one.

Maggie Oliver's take on Burnham. I really respect Maggie Oliver - she shows so much decency, compassion, integrity. Deeds not just words. What she says here confirms what I suspected about Burham.

Maggie Oliver has admitted in a Panorama, relatively recently, that she knew, because the girls had told her, that police officers were complicit in the crimes of the grooming gangs. She kept that very quiet at the time, pushing the ' not wanting to be seen as racist' story about why no-one was held to account. I have very little respect for her.

Andy Burnham wasn’t even an MP when labour won. He has no proper mandate. Labour have been weak since being elected and have no plan. I can’t even think of anything good they have done (apart from the under 16 social media ban but is only because they u turned into that!!) If he is to lead the country we need to see what he stands for - I believe he should call a snap general election.

When people are interviewed on the street I always wonder to what extent editors choose the reactions they like. I'm sure, if interviewed, the editors would assure me that they select a fair representation of the people they've interviewed but I might not believe that.

Agree. If the interviews in Makerfield shown on TV had been a guide I'd have expected a Reform victory.
However given that both sides wanted to message it was 'tight' to get their vote out, I'm not necessarily thinking this is pro Reform bias.
I think Reform supporters just often make for better entertainment because they are liable to say more controversial things and confirm stereotypes. Like the guy who when asked who he was voting for said 'Farage'..left there inducating their supporters didn't really know what was going on.

Agree, its our press which are a disgrace. Mainly owned by 5 billionaires who don't even live here and certainly don't even pay tax here, why are we letting them dictate to us how this country should be run? They paid for Brexit and it paid off nicely for them, but not for us, the country is poorer since Brexit, but billionaires are all richer, funny that! Papers like The Express and The Mail are just poison, dripping into people's ears...and don't even get me started on The S*n.

But we do not have to vote for who the papers and media want - British people have short memory spans and are gullible. Need to up the education in this country and get people to thinks things through instead of being subservient to the press and media.

This is supreme nit picking. Surely both can be true?

Police were complicit and allowed the crimes to carry on partly because they didn't want to be accused of racism?

Complicit means they allowed to go ahead, unless you mean they were explicitly involved - I know some allegations of this have recently surfaced. Of course it's difficult for the survivors as a feature of this whole child abuse and torture scandal is that the police did not believe the girls nor listen to their allegations of crimes.

He needs to get a new chancellor and reverse the national insurance hike on employers .

The hospitality industry is dying- think of all the pubs and restaurants. Not just the staff employed but the logistics. The supply chains.

Beefeter and Brewers Fayre are closing their restaurants, bar some of the ones attached to hotels. Two big British restaurants companies going.

Surely this is a wake up call?

I think he has suggested he would look at reversing the NI hike. But it should be looked at in the round alongside a package of tax reforms that promote growth. Starmer’s government failed on growth despite it being the central plank to their election campaign.

I've never heard of a call for a genocide against Jewish people on any threads/pages I see online, and if I did, I'd call it out and report it, because that would be sick, racist and clear AS.

It is actually the official policy of Hamas, clearly called for in their Constitution.

Remember, when you claim that Israel is committing genocide against Palestinians, that roughly as many Arabs who identify as Palestinians live in Israel as Israeli citizens, as live in Gaza.

Anyway, my apologies to the majority of posters for allowing myself to be caught up in this argument on this thread.

Maybe there will never be growth ? Maybe it will always be a sticking point and those days are gone. Too many factors why we can’t have the boom they all want to see . What are the other parties ideas for growth ?

If you don’t know any of the good they’ve done then you don’t pay much attention.

Other parties don't need ideas unless a GE is called. It's up to Labour to dig themselves out of the ever deepening hole they've created - and fast. In the words of their ex-PM 'their work is urgent'.

They also hounded Tim Farron when he was Libdem leader over his Christian beliefs!

With a good leader like Farron, Libdems could have been a big player in the last couple of elections, but Ed Davey has no presence at all and has made the Libdems invisible and irrelevant.

Many lubdem voters (me included) could never forgive them for tories. They should have been part of a rainbow coalition which would have allowed them to keep more of their manifesto
Also we could try being a resource based economy. Money is not used properly and widely circulated. Nobody should be in poverty in this day and age.
With ai being foisted on all and being used to save money (cut jobs), the only sensible to thing is UBI. To protect everyone

There is absolutely no need for a general election. Labour was elected. We vote for a party. We don’t vote for a person and we voted for labour.

This makes me sad and frustrated. I’m not a lover of Starmer. I don’t think he’s done much to deserve this. It’s also short sighted and pointless. Nothing is going to magically change or be better just because he’s been hounded out.
The world continues to be as it is with all the same problems
Just now, instead of expending their energy trying to solve some of the issues, our government is going to spend the next 6 months arguing and back stabbing amongst themselves.
Great.

Nothing can change. Country's welfare bill rising and rising, undocumented people taken in by the very same ships whose personnel is meant to repel them....

BIossomtoes · 23/06/2026 21:30

To be fair, all parties say things like this when it suits them. Farage said the same when he claimed that by elections should be held when an MP changes party, but then suddenly changed his mind when he started accepting a load of ex Tories in to Reform, so it’s a bit of hypocrisy.

One difference between this and when Angela called for an election though is the fact that at that time, we’d already had 12 years of nonsense from the government and I think the vast majority of the electorate was fed up after 12 years and 4 PM’s by the time Sunak came along. I was ready for a change by then myself.
