So the admittedly boring but truly decent PM has announced his resignation and the egotistical, pompous Burnham will doubtless become PM. God help the country

Of course it can change. 🙄

you can expand

Starmer was close to tears but I don't feel for him, I remember when Boris had to quit, and Starmer had been goading him for weeks, going for the jugular, especially after all the cabinet resignations, remember " the charge of the lightweight brigade" from Starmer? I wonder how long he had been rehearsing that. Andy Burnham used to be my local M.P. until 2017, and I wish him well.

’Boris’ deserved it though. He was a lightweight. And a law breaker.

I remember this episode very differently. Starmer calmly but forcefully exposed Johnson for his promotion of Chris Pincher who Boris knew was 'handsy' and had sexually assaulted several men. He challenged those who were still supporting this cover up and Javid and Sunak resigned shortly after. You have reminded me of how good Starmer was.

NorthernGnashers · 23/06/2026 23:26

Yes, and whiter than white Starmer wanted his man in Washington, no matter what.

Still a better politician than 2Tier though.

I join the chorus of people asking what is the point of this change?
For a while, we've had a new PM every 1-2 years.
Where is the stability?
It feels like this country is being governed by social media now.

Exactly that. People of the UK would vote for Mickey Mouse if the media told them to.

If your view of ‘a good politician’ is a lying, cheating lawbreaker I guess. It isn’t mine I’m afraid.

Really? They were told repeatedly by the media not to vote for Brexit, and keep getting told that they are "racist" if they want their country to properly control it"s borders, I think a lot of people are waking up.

The basics are reading the public mood, Brexit for example, 2Tier just immediately started shouting for another vote, LOL, and even now would drag us back to bending the knee to the EU if he could., so far out of touch that he is in another solar system. I see he got a smile and almost a laugh (!) on his face today, and a good couple of amusing digs at KB, who is starting to get tedious, too late though mate, way too late.

Honestly, I got to ‘2Tier’ and the rest just reads as blah blah blah
No point in trying to engage with someone who thinks that’s in anyway a sensible way to talk about a politician. People who make up silly names (or use silly names others made up) seldom have enough knowledge to make it worth while so I don’t bother. Apologies if the rest of your post was well argued and supported information.

Reading the public mood, like having daily/weekly drinking parties crammed full of people when the country is in lockdown and people are being threatened by police if they get a coffee with a friend while out for a walk? So in tune with the people.

So "non-engagement" was worth a decent sized paragraph? I will boil it down for you to one line - KS is not in touch with the UK public mood, and his values don"t align with the values of large numbers of the UK public.

Pretty much. Even his own MPs know this.

cardibach · 24/06/2026 14:21

It wasn’t so much non engagement @KeepPumping as a comment on the depths to which supposed debate has sunk.
The mood of the country has been largely dictated by media and foreign actors - its wuite clear. However, Starmer has accepted it. That’s exactly what he said in his speech, while pointing out everything he’d achieved as counterpoint.

No enough people just didn’t want him in and were prepared to vote to get politicians to move on that.

The 'mood' of the public hasn't been dictated by the media. It's been dictated by the failure of Starmer's leadership. He was an extremely poor leader and the party has performed very poorly across the first two years in power. He resigned. Time to move forward.

Yes, this. The media predicted a remain win and were utterly shocked the lessers hadn't followed instructions but had thought for themselves when the result came out.

It's called democracy. And, even though I personally voted Remain I'd rather a shitty Brexit than no more democracy.

The media by and large - especially the BBC - constantly underestimates the intellect of working class people.

There are a large number of people in positions of power who would absolutely remove the vote from the working class if they could - all the comments about them being 'racist' 'influenced by others' 'thick' etc. The evidence I see points the other way.
