So the admittedly boring but truly decent PM has announced his resignation and the egotistical, pompous Burnham will doubtless become PM. God help the country

I wish wish wish he had stuck with it. We’ll have to have a GE. what fresh hell is coming

No we won’t

Yes I know how strongly you feel it’s ok. You are angry about Starmer but it’s not my problem. Enjoy the sunshine instead.

How eloquent. Socrates was right.

Ok sounds great. Enjoy your evening.

Bonkers. We have fixed terms between elections now, the strategic thing would have been be to keep Starmer cracking on soaking up all the rage from the political right and far left and making the difficult reforms that are sorely needed. THEN he should have resigned before the next GE is due and let Burnham make his pitch to the party and then to the country along with all the other party candidates.

No-one is going to be able to do what needs to be done AND preside over a booming economy AND be popular AND keep the Trump chaos circus at arm’s length. Cycling endlessly through PMs is not going to magically change that.

the same will hapoen to AB as Starmer then there’ll be an election and then what? Starmer was doing ok just stoically getting on with the job. I think he genuinely wanted the best for the country and his party should have been loyal. Then AB could have swept in for the next election .

This doesn't sound very nice. You gloat and you goad. But it is the same thing all the time. If that is what was the most important thing to you, you can just think mission accomplished and forget about it. People are discussing a wide range of related topics - we do not all have the same angle on this.

WhereYouLeftIt · 22/06/2026 14:26

I would question the "truly decent" assertion. Patrick Maguire of The Times wrote a column ending with calling him a decent man. Here he is saying he got phonecalls from about 30 Labour people saying they didn't agree.

(Edited to link to the column he wrote in February)

Yes And? I don’t need the aggro. You might be upset. I’m not. Did you hear the Labour MPs cheer at Burnham’s sign in? My posts are really not relevant. You have MPs in his party who are delighted.

Twiglets1 · 22/06/2026 18:05

Ever wondered why that is?

No and you sound paranoid to worry about why Labour politicians should be "Friends of Israel". About the FoI:

Labour Friends of Israel supports a negotiated two-state solution for two peoples; with Israel safe, secure and recognised within its borders; living alongside a viable, democratic and independent Palestinian state.

https://www.lfi.org.uk/about/

No, I don't doubt for a minute you've never wondered, because I can see you already know what the point of Labour Friends of Israel is. And I know this because youre labelling somebody querying why it even exists (which is a legitimate question, as affiliation groups do not exist for other areas of conflict around the world), as 'paranoid'. Whats your view on the genocide Israel has been committing for the past 2 and a half years? And why no MPs who are part of Labour Friends of Israel are willing to call a genocide happening in real time, on our screens what it actually is. Despite the UN, the International Association of Genocide Scholars, Amnesty International, Medicine Sans Frontiers and many others all coming out and confirming that it is, in fact, a genocide?

Absolutely agree. Someone on another thread said we're getting like Italy used to be, when we all laughed at them for constantly switching one limelight-hogging narcissist for another.

Starmer's Mr Sensible, he was doing a pretty good job but isn't exciting. Also see John Major and Theresa May. Might as well choose our PMs via Britain's Got Talent, one winner each year.

I can't believe you have actually written that out.

Read it back to yourself - slowly - and try and consider it with a fresh mind, free of bias and prejudice.

Oh please. Point out where I'm showing bias. Me wondering why we don't have Labour groups affiliated to other countries? Give over. I rather think YOUR bias is showing, that you think it's OK for just one other nation state to have an influence group among our Parliamentary MPs. A country that is currently committing genocide no less. Tell me why that's acceptable. Tell me like I'm 5 years old.

You should go over to the Conflict in the Middle East board if you want to discuss Gaza. Plenty of like minded people over there. Maybe you're already there under a different name I don't know. If you didn't know where to post anti Israel stuff - you're welcome!

I don't think he is decent. Doesn't know what a woman is. Shocking behaviour over Mandelson.

He has no presence. While I hate the cult of celebrating politicians who are showmen with no morals, a country;s leader does have to have a bit of charisma. His voice is shockingly dreary. He's barely ever on TV or radio so has no presence to the nation. No clear policies. The only thing he did which I admire was standing up to Trump and saying no to war. That was huge and I respect him deeply for that. But if he has that much backbone, why has he not shown it throughout?

Only narcissists have charisma. I think a boring working PM is better than charismatic leader.

Decent man with no plan. Was that an accurate statement on one of the papers? I don’t find him half as decent as he should be. However, I take that boring plank any day than the nuts that can replaced him. I like Ivette Cooper better than the rest.

Boring plank? Is he supposed to entertain you?

Starmer's resignation speech had me shouting at the telly. Either the man is deluded, or he believes his own lies (or the lies he is fed?). IF NHS waiting lists are shorter it is only because the process has changed and has been manipulated. People now have to wait before they are even considered for a waiting list - does he not see the utter sh!t show that is the current NHS with the sick dying in hospital corridors and people unable to easily get appointments with their GP? Then came his assertion about 'the boats' - does he never listen to the news? 😡 However, I did feel the end of the speech was very gracious and came from the heart.

Let’s bring Boris Johnson back to calm you down. The truth seeker and truth speaker. And that bus with 350 million a week or maybe you prefer Nigel Farage?

This is laughable. You honestly expect me to believe you truly don’t understand why there might be a group focused on Israel but not, say, Iceland? Come on. Pull the other one.

I haven’t shown any bias. But feel free to quote me if you think I have. Calling out prejudice is not bias. It’s a call for you to check your bias.

I'll post on whatever forum I fancy thanks. And how UK politicians respond to International issues and what shapes their opinion on these issues is absolutely part of UK politics and is taken into consideration by lots of voters, nyself included. I see that you dodged the question about what you think about the current genocide going on though.

No, but the constituencies in Greater Manchester are pretty representative of the so-called Red Wall and he has managed to secure astonishing levels of goodwill from people right across the political spectrum.

But there is no longer a red wall. It was pretty much pulled down at the last local elections, when traditional Labour constituencies were demolished. Might have been a thing previously, but the UK is no longer a two party country.

Thanks for proving my point by listing those, very helpful. You have showed there is no other affiliated grouping which advocates purely on behalf of a another sovereign country. There is 1 group advocating for Europe, which is about Brexit. And 1 advocating for Palestinians, who currently don't have a country but would quite like that to change. No, just the 1 country who has its own group then. The country currently committing a genocide.
