What do you think of Lammy's comments on taking the knee?

David Lammy has said he wouldn't take the knee for Nowak as it's just symbolism.

He was asked why did he take the knee for George Floyd, and he said it was different then because we were in a pandemic.

What do you think? I think he's right about the first point but don't understand what the knee has got to do with the pandemic.

There was another Labour MP on Newsnight this week who's clearly embarrassed that she took the knee and said something like "it was right then but that's in the past now and we shouldn't go back to it"

Last night, dressed up and in heels, alone in London on my way home from an evening event,
walking and then on public transport, I, white, middle age and middle class, potentially vulnerable, had three separate encounters with men from a different race from me. One the same age and two younger, Each of the encounters involved one of us performing a small kindness or courtesy to the other and each time, we parted with a smile and thanks.

It’s not that broken. Funnily enough, a friend’s son had had his mobile stolen from the same place so I was watching my possessions carefully. But all I experienced was… considerate people.

I expect you live in a nice area where you're largely insulated from the kinds of things people are talking about on this thread.

No, as I said. I was walking in an area where a friend had his phone stolen by a gang.

You do know that an area becoming less safe doesn't mean a person will have something stolen or encounter something unpleasant every single time they are in the area? It sounds like you are discounting others experiences just because it luckily wasn't your experience on a particular night.

Yes, I understand that you were walking in an area where someone had their phone stolen.

But do you LIVE in an area where this is a commonplace occurance? It's the people at the bottom of the pile that are really paying the price for govt policy of mass immigration and massive societal change. It's being subjected to this every day that sours one's outlook on the multicultural experiment.

the George Floyd killing took place at a time when transgender support was very loud and LGBT+++ supporters were marching - people were being no platformed and lecturers etc were being sacked for being transphobic. Politicians were scared of the Twitter mob and jumped on the safest bandwagon and took the knee.
Ridiculous - and demonstrates how feeble our leaders are

i think that footballers took the knee as there are so many black players

ACynicalDad · 10/06/2026 13:23

He's struggling with cognitive dissonance - he's not very bright it's easy to be a campaigner, far harder to be an effective minister and he's been demoted already.

Yes, agreed. This kind of dismissal of other people's unpleasant experiences is annoying and unfair.

Yes, I agree, the whole BLM and taking the knee was a collective madness and people felt pressured to do it in case they got called racist. It was peak craziness and I'm glad it's been discredited.

If we ever do what other countries have and stop deaths at sea we’ll probably look back similarly.

No one should have taken the knee for anyone. And laws should apply to everyone regardless of religion. Carrying a knife is illegal regardless of religious beliefs.

Lammy is a bloody fool and shouldn't be anywhere near the cabinet. Labour had an amazing chance to form a government but instead they put together a gang of idiots to run the country.

Milliband and, Lammy two of the ones that should have not been allowed anywhere near power. Bloody fools.

As a labour voter I'm dismayed at the quality of people that we have.

Any Burnham was in my opinion the top choice for leader, how we ended up with Starmer I will never know but compared to Milliband I think he was the best option.

This sort of jargon makes me despair honestly. The only people I know in real life who rant on like this are people who spend too much time on the Internet and not enough time engaging with people in real life.

It's a really sad sign of the times.

Sadiq Khan is part of 'the left' that this poster is talking about, I'm not sure that anyone can argue that he doesn't care. Sadiq Khan has spoken repeatedly and publicly about the disproportionate impact of serious violence on Black Londoners, especially young Black men.

When Jewish people asked him to speak out against the hate they were experiencing post the pogrom his response was to be photographed grinning in a Palestinian restaurant.

dwordle · 11/06/2026 12:07

I'm cautious of the anti semitic cull of anyone who dares to speak out against Israel. I'm not saying Jewish people should be held responsible for the actions of Israel but I stand firm that Israel and all those that support the regime that has seem countless civilians being killed are wrong and they should face a full criminal inquiry.

I'm.not going to get drawn into anti semitic or anti Islam, my view is killing civilians to achieve a military objective should be avoided at all cost. I from what I've read and what I've seen there was been no regards for civilian safety.

As for Lammy, I think he simply doesn't have the intelligence for the job. He might be very good at representing his constituency but he's an appalling choice for that job. I say the same thing about Milliband, he's bright and has good intentions but he has no real industry experience in what he's trying to achieve. I strongly believe we should promote green initiatives because I want clean air but I strongly disagree with how's it's being implemented.

So do I ... if his behaviour was being discussed in Relationships, Mumsnetters would be saying "throw that one back".
