Sounds like she's throwing her hat in the ring.

She says she's paid off the tax she owes and is no longer under investigation.

This apparently means she's free to run - and is going to.

Interesting, thank you.
She's definitely got support. I had thought Streeting would be more popular.

To win Streeting has to get 20% support from MPs and be the most popular among the members out of the people on the ballot.

Reports say he's unlikely to get 20% support and, if he does, the members only prefer him to Starmer, not to any of the other candidates.

Right, thank you. I thought he had more support than Rayner.

Never Miliband! - IMO he’s been a disaster for this country.

If not for his arrogance in thinking he was PM material - when he was the chosen ‘darling’ of the unions, and when he should have been bright enough to understand that the Harder Left does not win U.K. elections, we’d probably have had David Miliband as Labour leader and PM.

We wouldn’t have had Cameron, and we probably wouldn’t have had Brexit.

Oh dear. The Ed Stone!

The bookies think there's about a 40% chance of her being the next leader, Burnham about 33%, Miliband about 25% and Streeting about 20%.

It's worth pointing out - this is to be next leader, not to win this leadership contest, so Starmer is not included in these odds (and the Labour rules are that Starmer gets on the final ballot if he wants to run, he doesn't have to hit the 20% parliamentary support).

Rayner is more popular than Starmer, Streeting and Miliband among Labour members, but less popular than Burnham.

The bookies therefore probably think that the final ballot for members will include Rayner, but not Burnham, and she will therefore win.

I think this shows how far removed from public view Labour Party members are. Because it shouldn’t jisy be about who is more popular With tnem, it should be about who will the public accept and can do the job.

I think though if you’re in there paying your dues to be a member, you’re die hard, and many of them won’t be aligned with the majority of the public.

labour always screw the selves and the public over when they take power. But this has been extreme. I’m shocked if I’m honest, at just how very bad it is, and so quickly. I don’t think anyone could have guessed just how incompetent and removed from reality they are, they seem unable to understand the impact of their own policies and think nothing of lying when it suits them,

It's interesting to gauge Mumsnet's opinions on this.

Rayner isn't popular but it seems she's more popular than Streeting. Is that correct?

If the leadership was Starmer v Streeting v Rayner v Miliband v Burnham, I would vote, in this order:

  1. Rayner
  2. Miliband
  3. Burnham
  4. Starmer
  5. Streeting

Anyone else feel the same?

I'd vote:
Starmer
Miliband
Raynes (AR vs Badenoch at PMQs!)
Burnham
Streeting (a touch of the Mandleson there!)

BUT: as with endless Tory PM we can't vote
AND: as with endless Tory PMs it's a terrible idea. KS is pretty competent & by far the best Labour (& the rest of them) have to offer atm.

Yes a would, but the snobbery and misogyny she already faces would be insurmountable in terms of being able to get on with the job let alone lead Labour into an election.

Which is surely a reason to not vote for her. She will not command the respect of the public or other world leaders. This much is obvious.

That classism and sexism persists in the mid 21st century is appalling, but you can’t wish it away.

The idea that Labour members would once again sacrifice stability and electability for ideology makes me despair.

I have only once not voted Labour in a GE in my long life but I now feel politically homeless.

Kipperandarthur · 14/05/2026 10:15

She would utterly tank the economy and be so out of her depth, whilst at the same time being in hock to the unions. It would be a disaster.

She just doesn't have the intelligence or stature to be our PM.

Safarisagoody · 14/05/2026 10:18

Sky is saying al Carns may stand, looking at his voting record he was in there voting every time to increase taxes, from employer insurance to increasing stamp duty, there isn’t a tax hike the man hasn’t voted for.

Yes she’s the union member, that’s why they can’t get rid of her, the unions would go to war. She’d prob be the worst of the bunch, she’d have no free will.

THIS 100%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kelly1969 · 14/05/2026 10:20

No, absolutely not and I’m annoyed she didn’t have to pay a penalty for dodging tax!

I'd never even heard of him. I read that he's been a Colonel in the Marines? Quite a different kind of candidate.

BlackRowan · 14/05/2026 10:20

I voted for Labour but absolutely not.

i don’t think she’s capable enough to be a prime minister and I don’t like her too left policies for me

No. Not even if she's the last person left standing.

She is woefully underqualified to speak for the UK on the world stage. And I have no confidence on her at home either.

same.

Out of the entire Labour lot Starmer is the only somewhat palatable one, only thanks to his judgements about international affairs.

Rayner - in terms of awfulness she's on par with Farage and Polanski. Different policies of course, but the same level of horror

BlackRowan · 14/05/2026 10:23

OMG there really are people thinking that this country needs even MORE left wing 😹🫣 unbelievable. Especially after Reform gaining popularity 😹😹😹

Labour won the elections only because it had centrist policies. Going further left when the voters are clearly saying that they want reduced welfare and more immigration control is going to absolutely kill this party.

1dayatatime · 14/05/2026 10:24

Safarisagoody · 14/05/2026 10:05

They all have their own agenda. This isn’t about the country, right now they don’t give a shit about the country, they are fighting for their own ambitions. They’ve totally lost sight of why they are elected.

If they cared about the country and the economy then they wouldn't be having this leadership discussion / contest in the first place.

Its destabilising creating higher gilt yields that cost everyone more in higher interest costs.

Instead it's all about Party not Country.

WhatNextImScared · 14/05/2026 06:49

YESSS

God I would be so delighted to. But I won’t get the chance because the Labour Party membership is misogynist and won’t elect her leader.

It's nothing to do with misogyny,

She isn't capable and her policies would be a disaster.

Agree with this. Usually the govt have to at least pretend to care what the electorate thinks.

Labour don't seem to have the decency to even pay lip service to the voters.

That's my thought as well.

If Labour finally had a left wing Prime Minister it would be the first time this century - and imagine what she could achieve.

But the party is too misogynistic, racist and transphobic to elect anything other than a white right wing man.

What would she achieve do you think?

Maybe this is a fiendish plan to scare people into supporting Starmer?

He may be bad, but look at the alternatives ...

I would rather be crucified twice. The woman who used her disabled son’s money to buy a second home? And she’s pretty average in terms of being clever - all she bangs on about is how she was a young mother who did well herself, people will take her less seriously than KS, and he’s pretty laughable 🤣.

Transphobic? What's the betting their first ' woman leader' is a trans woman? There will just be something about her that just screams ' leadership material' that all the other competent female Labour politicians over the last 100 years just didn't have...
