This post nails it about left wing voters on Mumsnet over the last two days

It's by an ex-academic on X, about posts on Reddit over the last 48 hours but is equally applicable to Mumsnet, where I can seeing posts stating things like:

"How stupid are Reform voters? Don't they realise they'll get fewer benefits?!"

The irony is of course that it's those posters who need to be educated, not the working class voters they mock because they think they're thick.

Here you go:

Reading through Reddit threads in which leftists/progressives express their bewilderment/confusion/fury at working class English voters for casting their lot in with Reform, one of the things I'm starting to understand is this:

They simply do not understand how a government could help working-class people in any other way besides giving them benefits, handouts, and other free things.

Their entire mental architecture is premised upon the premises that

  1. Working class people are poor
  2. The only way for them to not be poor is for the state to give them free stuff
  3. So left-wing parties need to promise them lots of free stuff

Then, when these working-class voters instead vote for right-of-centre parties who instead promise an economy in which they can build a career, start their own business, make a financial success of themselves and start a family, they're confused.

Because, again, in their mental architecture, what the working class are supposed to want is free benefits from the state.

But what they actually want is a fair shake at making their own way in the world, making money, getting on in life.

And the left simply doesn't understand that what these voters want from the state is an economy in which they can actually do this.

It’s a cultural change to have such racial sensitivity and to have marches & demonstrations on a regular basis in UK cities against a war in a different country that we are not directly involved in.

Jewish people in the UK would probably say the UK no longer feels like a welcoming place for them to live despite British values being supposedly inclusive. Society has become more divided.

British people feel worried about celebrating being British- flying flags for example is only really considered ok now in the context of the World Cup. And even then … I saw a MN post yesterday from someone saying the World Cup is just an excuse for racists to fly England flags.

I agree with you on much of that.

Do you think the Brexit debate politicised more people? along with populist politicians like Farage.

I ve always followed politics (supporting both Tory and Labour at various times) but i was the exception and avoided the subject but now, its everyone, friends who previously just muttered "they are all the same" are now "experts" in vaxx and climate change denial, post constantly on various issues from immigration to the NHS and strongly believe white people are discriminated against.

I don't know anyone who has gone from indifference to left wing views, tell a lie, yes just one person.

The far left just think they are the elite 😂

Who are the far left?

EasternStandard · 05/06/2026 10:04

hedgeknight · 05/06/2026 09:34

Who are the far left?

It’s from the pp this .

‘Now the far right are the working class. And the left are the elite.’

It’s not the case. Labour have lost many wc voters including trades mentioned below that is the case. But those who do still back Labour or Greens are typically not the elite.

That does not explain what is meant with the far left.

Who are the elite backing then?

@Alexandra2001 we clearly know different electricians and builders!

Far left was probably used as the pp used far right.

Re who they’ll vote for, I guess we’ll see at next GE.

Farage and Mao. How are they similar in tactics. Cult of personality etc.

Both presented big projects that would solve all. Mao had the great leap forward, Farage had Brexit. Both projects did not deliver what was promised. They failed. And both Mao and Farage were sidelined. Into the political wilderness they went for a while.

But both really want power no matter what. Mao had his Cultural Revolution, Farage launched reform.

And both Mao and Farage blamed the others in power for the failure of their main projects. And they said "Trust me, I can fix things, and only I have the vision to fix it".

So, blame those in power for what is wrong. And if something is actually ok, then tell the people " No, it is wrong and only I can fix it". You know, invent problems, or escalate what are not problems, into being the biggest problems.

Divide society. Threaten the establishment with "do it my way or I will take my people". And back that up with protests, often violent. And above all, rouse their base with promises of a utopia. Without actually saying what that utopia will be.

Attack academia. Lebel your opponents as the elite. Tell your supporters that this elite only have one function:-to keep you down so they can keep their power over you. But they, Mao and Farage, can fix it.

"Look at the elite. They hate you, they insult you, but I care about you. And only I can help you"

And you can throw in the anti science stuff, anti institutions, attack the media too. " They are trying to indoctrinate you. But I am waking you up"

See, same playbook

So. that's my bit, Your turn.

What British cultural things can't British do any more?

Explained in an easy to understand way.

Well, you are comparing apples and oranges. They are both fruit, but they still ain't the same.

I don't have time just now to fully review this another display of superficial knowledge, overinflated intelligence that is your trademark, I have pallets to move.

So who do they mean with far left?

You must have an idea who you think the elite will vote for?

I don’t. Big drops for Union members, but also I expect that’s replicated in the elite section.

Labour are losing to everyone everywhere.

Unless they turn it around people could go for any other party.

Twiglets1 · 05/06/2026 10:39

hedgeknight · 05/06/2026 09:34

Who are the far left?

Those who don’t consider Labour left wing enough so they have to go further left which is the space the Green Party are currently trying to occupy.

hedgeknight · 05/06/2026 10:40

That is a very vague non answer, an 'I don't know' would have been fine.

Thanks

u3ername · 05/06/2026 10:43

The problem with the far right is they assume everyone who disagrees is leftist/ far left.

They are called thick because they don’t understand any of the arguments, data and opinions presented to them. Some people are not very bright and that’s a fact. They do happen to be the ones who are not interested in debate but just chose to believe in those who give them someone to blame it on all/ someone to hate. Hatred is so innate - you can’t fight it if you are not emotionally intelligent, educated about history, have no understanding of the world, or even of human nature.
Nobody would call them ‘stupid’ if they didn’t behave as such, but also they are not called ‘stupid’ as much as it’s made out. In reality, many people are genuinely trying to engage in a debate and listen.
The media has certainly given them a disproportionately bigger platform.

Not all Green voters. There are some that still presumably vote Green on environmental issues.

I can understand knowing that Labour are losing to everyone is an issue for those still loyal.

I’m not far right myself more centrist. But I think you are making assumptions here about those who vote Reform in assuming they are all the same.

While it’s true that some people are not very bright, that is true across the political spectrum and some left leaning people are also not very bright. And you will have intelligent people represented across the political spectrum too from far left to far right & including voters who prefer the middle ground such as myself.

To me far left are those that constantly criticise the Labour Party for being too right wing & who may defect to the Green Party not because of any environmental concerns but purely because they see them as being the most left wing party they have available to vote for.

No, I still think they are the best choice.

I find you use of loyal strange. I am not loyal to any party. I am left leaning but float between parties and have plenty of criticisism for any of them.

Using your terminology, who are you loyal to?

So you do still vote Labour, I guessed right. I’ve voted for both major parties in the past and rn I like Kemi.

Again, the left is just not the monolith reform voters seem to think they are.
And nothing, short of joining in the xenophobia, will do them any favours.
