This post nails it about left wing voters on Mumsnet over the last two days

It's by an ex-academic on X, about posts on Reddit over the last 48 hours but is equally applicable to Mumsnet, where I can seeing posts stating things like:

"How stupid are Reform voters? Don't they realise they'll get fewer benefits?!"

The irony is of course that it's those posters who need to be educated, not the working class voters they mock because they think they're thick.

Here you go:

Reading through Reddit threads in which leftists/progressives express their bewilderment/confusion/fury at working class English voters for casting their lot in with Reform, one of the things I'm starting to understand is this:

They simply do not understand how a government could help working-class people in any other way besides giving them benefits, handouts, and other free things.

Their entire mental architecture is premised upon the premises that

  1. Working class people are poor
  2. The only way for them to not be poor is for the state to give them free stuff
  3. So left-wing parties need to promise them lots of free stuff

Then, when these working-class voters instead vote for right-of-centre parties who instead promise an economy in which they can build a career, start their own business, make a financial success of themselves and start a family, they're confused.

Because, again, in their mental architecture, what the working class are supposed to want is free benefits from the state.

But what they actually want is a fair shake at making their own way in the world, making money, getting on in life.

And the left simply doesn't understand that what these voters want from the state is an economy in which they can actually do this.

I am not being obtuse at all, The poster said, quote:

"just keeping our own culture will do for me. That's the most important thing."

I am asking what part of their culture has been lost ?

What is being lost, or whatever.

They are clearly referring to the future if we continue as we are. That’s why they mentioned other countries that did start off with a small Islamic population that grew to become the majority.
What are you having difficulty understanding?

I am not understanding what part of their culture is/ will be lost. Or is being lost.

That is what I am asking.

White people are now being put to the end of the queue. So wrong.

The end of what queue?

The queue to get a kebab on a Friday night ? Or a curry on a Saturday night. Are you waiting too long for a Chinese takeaway to be delivered ?

It would be good if they could be clear about what they do mean.

Ah ye olde British food is boring and we need immigration for the curry argument. Not that we don’t have all the recipes on the internet now anyway lol.

I’m at a stage where my response is I’d happily eat beans on toast every night if it meant my daughters could safely walk the streets without risking a grooming gang

Baked beans. Made from the Navy bean. That is not a UK crop, it is imported. From the Americas I think.

So Marmite on toast ?

Sure let’s let in infinity migrants from countries where wife beating and child marriage are legal because beans are imported.

I don’t actually like baked beans tbh so we can change it to wild rabbit and foraged black berries if you want

Rabbits are not native to the UK. Imported by Romans. I think you are ok with blackberries. But depends on what variety.

So what culture is it that is being lost ?

I think I’m starting to get it now. You’re one of those people who think white people have “no culture”.
Im not going to waste anymore time on you. Enjoy your day!

Any queue. It already happens at some takeaways.

pusspuss9 · 31/05/2026 13:22

Again, what part of your culture has been lost ? Should be easy to answer. What cultural thing were you doing 20 years ago can't you do any more ?
it's the direction of travel isn 't it ? I've listed what happened in similar circumstances in most other countries that were in the same situation as we are now.
Let's discuss this in 20 years time and see what happened!

the freedom to wander alone in the countryside dressed as I want and to have the wind blow through my hair and feel the sun on my face.

Nope. I have a culture. In fact, I live in a country with a totally different culture to the one I have. Yet, I still have my culture.

This is what confuses me. If I can live in a different country, with a culture different to mine, but retain my culture, why do some UK people feel so threatened ?

Yes that comes up on here a fair bit. All the ‘what culture’ just for us, as if everywhere else has a culture bar here.

because they see with their own eyes what happens in Islamic countries. If you want to live an islamic life, then there are many countries to go to. You clearly don't value the freedoms we have in a democratic society.
Where are you living now and what is your 'culture'? that would be interesting.
I'll bet any money you're not willing to disclose it!

I take exception with this being levelled at the 'left wing'. In my experience, much of the working class is actually left wing, certainly up north in the old industrial heartlands where the votes for Labour could be weighed not that long ago. They're voting Reform because they are desperate for change. If Blair's Labour hadn't let them down so immensely, we wouldn't be where we are now.

It's my experience as a long time, exasperated Guardian reader that the people being referred to are actually liberals. These people despise the working class with a passion. They are the people who champion EDI, but what that looks like to them is giving a black kid from a top public school a leg up rather than a white working class kid with aptitude from a sink school who is excelling against the odds.

I loathe them with every fibre of my being.

I agree with you. And it’s white working class boys who are being failed terribly, but they are the ones the Liberals would demand risk their lives on the front line to save their necks if this country (God forbid) found itself in war again.

I also despise them.

Bridgertonisbest · 31/05/2026 13:57

I grew up very working class and would be considered left wing. I don’t, for a minute think that the only way a working class person can prosper is through benefits. I think that minimum wage should be higher, zero hours contracts should be abolished and fire and re-hire should also be illegal. We need to protect the NHS and properly educate our children so that we are creating a workforce that can benefit our businesses.

Meaningful work is good for the soul, living a life on benefits is not.

I am Scottish. And I am in the far East.

I have Jimmy Shand in my music collection, put up a Christmas tree. There is nothing stopping me from having my culture, even though I am the only Scottish person (that I know of) for many miles.

So if I can do that, why can't British people in Britain do their culture ?

Thank you for your reply.
I'm guessing that the country you currently live in does not place severe restrictions on your behaviour, whether or not you're allowed to go to school, or drive a car, who you are allowed to marry, sharia law and many other things a severe Islamist state imposes on it's women.
do you honestly not see a difference between democratic countries and an authoritarian state?
