How can people vote Green?

RobinStrike · 09/03/2026 13:09

The Greens are no longer the ecology party. They have been taken over by people who want to leave NATO, legalise drugs and don’t recognise women. I understand the attraction of a far left party but surely the original Greens don’t agree with all this.
Plus they expel people for refusing to recognise some members as fairies?

Their policies are ludicrous. I can only assume they are voted for by those who have no concern over social cohesion or run their own household . One friends daughter voted for them because they are against fox hunting . This is admirable but there are far more pressing issues that she wouldn’t know about as she lives in her bedroom at home not needing to be concerned about anything real world .

What has voting for traditional parties done for the UK?

The country is a total mess, roads have become tracks, NHS waiting lists keep increasing, our defence is a joke, we pay through the nose for everything, housing is for the very well off.

People wouldn't look to the Greens if traditional parties could actually do what they said they would do.

This really depresses me. Labour literally made fox hunting illegal but she’s voting Green!

They don’t want to legalise drugs 🤦‍♀️

read up on their very sensible policies on this matter please

OhDear111 · 09/03/2026 18:13

@hattie43 Maybe she did not know fox hunting was already banned? Somewhat ill informed. This is the problem though. New leader, new policies and still called Green. More like the irresponsible party. The “say what you want and don’t worry about the cost of it” party. Student politics goes mad and mainstream.

PiMCA · 09/03/2026 18:15

EmeraldRoulette · 09/03/2026 17:00

@PiMCA I respect your right to vote as you choose

If I may ask a couple of questions

What do you think about how legalisation of drugs went in Oregon?

What would you like to see happen with the UK army?

What rights do you think trans people need and do they vary from the rights we all have (or should have).

I'm not going to argue about it. I'm just interested in the answers.

Oregon did not legalise drugs, they decriminalised possession of small amounts and it was a disaster. They failed to put enough into the root causes of drug use and allowed counties to make up their own rules so without any consistency, nobody actually knew their rights as they were different in each place!

I would like to see the UK army disbanded but I do know that is probably not a good idea.

Just the right not to be discriminated against really, just like everyone else.

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 09/03/2026 18:22

The Greens were never about ecology in the first place. They used it as a vehicle to drive through communism.

A lot of people vote tactically, some with a tribal mentally (the ones ideologically opposed to any other party besides Labour).

Sooner or later people are going to realise that there is no voting our way out of this mess.

That’s as maybe but the Greens are dangerous and reckless . I understand the disappointment in the traditional two parties but far better to positively abstain than vote for such lunacy .

LoveHearts69 · 09/03/2026 17:07

They don’t want to legalise drugs, they want to decriminalise them and treat them as more of a public health issue than a criminal one.

We have the worst drug related deaths in Europe so what we’re currently doing isn’t working. If you want to compare models, Portugal have decriminalised drugs with fantastic results.

Portugal's policies had great results initially, but as time went on and funding was cut, things started to go wrong. Overdoses stood at a 12-year high in 2023. It takes a lot of money to treat addiction as a public health problem and to get each individual user back on track.

Knowing the UK's record at finding funds for long-term, progressive initiatives like this, I don't hold out much hope that it would ever work here.

Abstaining just lets in the party you don’t want. How can you do it positively? It’s intrinsically negative.

positive abstaining is a conscious decision not to vote for a specific reason .

blankcanvas3 · 09/03/2026 18:39

Because I like their policies and they best align with my personal politics.

EmeraldRoulette · 09/03/2026 18:57

@PiMCA thank you for answering my question. I said I wouldn't ask any follow-up questions so I won't.

@LoveHearts69 thank you also. I think the interview I saw was from before Christmas. But the party conference is coming up, isn't it? Or the vote to specify the situation on drugs. @LaurieFairyCake I thought they were holding off on publishing a policy until that vote?

@EasternStandard apparently a lot of people who voted for Mamdani come from families with money but I don't know the age spread. The reason I mention that is I wonder if they're actually in charge of the family money. I find it all a bit "the trouble with socialism..." and I wonder if there will be some buyers remorse like there seems to be here?

There are 2 separate BBC articles quoting Polanski from the last few months where he talks about legalising (as opposed to decrimalising) drugs.

That's interesting because I've actually been wondering who's bought him - the last six months or so.

Who do you think bought the others just out of interest?

Have a look who their donors are. Always a good sign. For eg, one of Farage's is a crypto billionaire.

I think they have become the natural home for the super-woke and ultra lefties.

Weren't they always? I can't think of a single time they have ever been accused of being right wing!

Voting is a spectrum of views, some people like reform, some like greens and most are in between.

Two interviews here, one from October, the other February.
He does want to legalise drugs, not just decriminalise.

Drugs policy approach needs to change, Zack Polanski says

The Green Party leader of England and Wales says there needs to be a "public health approach" as he reiterates his backing for the legalisation of drugs.

I have to assume the billionaire tax will pay for the open borders somehow.

migration.greenparty.org.uk/migration-policy/

The Green Party in government will:

  1. Implement a fair and humane system of managed immigration
  2. Treat all migrants as if they are citizens
  3. Give all residents the right to vote
  4. Help families to be together
  5. Dismantle the Home Office
  6. Abolish the No Recourse to Public Funds condition
  7. Abolish the ten year route to settlement
  8. Stop the profiteering from application fees
  9. Stop putting people in prison because of their immigration status
  10. Accept our responsibility for the climate emergency and support the people forced to move

And yet …

“The fact is that the UK has the highest number of drug deaths in Europe. Stigma and misinformation about drugs and drug policy is causing more harm to people and our communities.

“The Green party’s policy is for legal control and regulation of all drugs to address these issues – our policy is about keeping people safe, and is backed by people who have lost loved ones to drugs, health professionals, and academics”.

So you support legalisation of all drugs?

Speaking to BBC South East ahead of his party conference, Zack Polanski said he agreed with a Kent Green councillor, who earlier this year called for the legalisation of all drugs, including class A drugs like heroin and crack cocaine.

TheWildZebra · 09/03/2026 20:49

The FT has a very good summary of their policies today. Read that and if you were in any doubt about how absolutely potty their policies are, you won’t be for long!

im completely baffled that they can honestly think that having open borders and being compatible with low-growth (ie low-nature-destroying) policies can work and not completely alienate people at the same time? And they want to print money? Mad mad mad.
