Why isn’t Trump being overthrown?

itsneverdullinull · 08/03/2026 07:39

I’m sorry if this is a really thick question but I’m guessing that the answers will be multi-faceted.

Why isn’t Trump being overthrown internally in the US? He is presiding over a shit show and trampling over the constitution from what I understand. But there doesn’t seem to be massive resistance to this (or at least none reported). Can anyone explain why this is, please. Genuine question.

Most Americans don't support Trump. The problem with America is there politics is so screwed and there's really little choice.

Bernie Sanders wouldn't get close to power, so what you are getting is extreme and neo liberalism....there's isn't a left.

It's going the same way in the UK.

if only Bernie Sanders could get more widespread support. He's a thoroughly decent person, and everything that Trump isn't. He talked on a broadcast yesterday about imposing a wealth tax on the billionaires, well that's never going to happen.

the trouble is the US today is built on a culture of such excessive greed with an even greater divide between the rich and poor than in UK. Sanders would never stand a chance because he's just too decent and not sufficiently cut-throat to ever get voted in as President. He'd be mincemeat.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 08/03/2026 08:14

I really hope you're right. I do think there were quite a lot of reasonably sensible voters who voted Trump on a "low tax ticket" expecting him to not do much / to be contained despite the rhetoric and are now horrified.

How terribly naive of them.

Neolara · 23/03/2026 22:51

Trump still has a 40% approval rating. Lots of people think he's doing a marvellous job..

PersephoneParlormaid · 08/03/2026 07:41

Plenty of people would like to get rid of Starmer but that’s not happening either.

What a ridiculous comparison. They are chalk and cheese.

Maggiethecat · 23/03/2026 23:12

Are Americans not embarrassed by this buffoon?

He and his team had no objective or exit strategy for war against Iran, never mind anticipating Iran’s counter attack options.

He gives a 48 hour ultimatum for Iran to open up the HS and then backs down and talks about a 5 day period for discussions with Iran and if unsuccessful for the US “we’ll just keep bombing our little hearts out”.

And we thought Dubya was thick?

IdentityCris · 24/03/2026 08:38

I think in practice an awful lot of Americans are cringing with embarrassment, rather like we were with Johnson. With both of them, you can absolutely guarantee that they cannot stop themselves lying and simply moving from one crisis to the next. Fortunately for us, the difference is that we had a mechanism for getting rid of our international embarrassment.

How? How is this possible?

This is why countries are building and strengthening alliances elsewhere despite some American politicians trying to reassure them that Trump will soon be gone and normalcy will resume.

The American people elected
someone so clearly dangerous and unfit for office and now we see that the supposed guardrails have collapsed.

And it can happen again.

The disapproval rating is 56% and growing.

paolo2145 · 24/03/2026 11:32

I think the biggest issue is not Trump himself but the fact that he represents a significant portion of American population. The fact that hardcore MAGA are literally 99% behind him no matter what vile thing he says or does, no matter how many promises he breaks, because he is effectively the anti Obama candidate.

There is a huge chunk of middle America who shares his views, that power makes right and that USA is centre of universe and to hell with anybody else.

I think that is a more disturbing reality.

Hopefully, there are still enough decent Americans to say enough is enough and realise the enormous damage he is doing to their country and international standing.

BIossomtoes · 24/03/2026 12:09

The non decent ones will turn on him in a heartbeat when the stock market goes through the floor and the price at the pump goes through the roof. “It’s the economy, stupid”.

MushMonster · 24/03/2026 17:20

I was expecting more people to have changed their mind about Trump, given his latest pearls and a costly war abroad, to which he seems to have jumped in fully unprepared. Specially, I was thinking that MAGA would turn on him in mass.
I did not expect Trump to be so wreckless and destructive, at all. I was well shocked when I heard his first speech as President. And here we are, going down his list.

PandoraSocks · 24/03/2026 18:41

God, the news is so depressing. I was just listening to David Milliband on LBC talking about what may happen if this goes on. Fuck Trump and Netanyahu. A pox on both of them.

@MushMonster as BIossomtoes says, the MAGA lot might finally turn when fuel and food costs go through the roof.

I’m surprised that people are surprised by his recklessness.

He showed who he was in his first term and of course the second term would be worse when he realised that he would not even be held to account for inciting the 6 Jan insurrection. Imagine the enormous boost to his already overinflated ego.

It’s also his last term in office (we hope) so why not just burn the whole damn house down?

I wish I could believe this to be the case. Unfortunately there seems to be a large swathe of base who will stand by him even if they lose the shirt off their backs. They believe him when he says they must suffer short term pain for long term benefit.

They’ll happily walk through fire for him while he and his family line their pockets.

He likes to boast that he is the best at everything. One thing I’ll give him - he’s the greatest con artist ever lived.

This- it's always this. I hope and expect that when the time comes, the personality cult goes with him- Vance doesn't have the style- and all his yes men get scapegoated, blamed for propping him up and washed anyway. I don't know who is going to get the job of diverting the rivers to hose through the Augean stables of selfish incompetents and clear up the mess. Perhaps a woman- when there's shit all over the carpet and the walls and the ceiling, it'll be a woman's job to clear it up, then she can be pushed out of the way so a young white man- preferably quite good looking in a wholesome all American way- reasonably decent but knows how to play the game.

Bernie Sanders is too decent and far too old. Biden was doddering and Trump is worse. I do think he has dementia and it's not even mild at this stage. I went down the rabbit hole on this a bit in the past few days, watching videos analysing his State of the Union address for example- and I do think the commentators who think he has to be whacked up to the eyeballs on go-go juice before he's wheeled on to rant for 2 hours are correct. He even forgot the word "Alzheimers" FGS.

"At a certain age, about 86, 87, he started getting, what do they call it?” Trump asked, pointing to his forehead and looking toward White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt.
“Alzheimer’s,” Leavitt replied.
“Like an Alzheimer’s thing. Well, I don’t have it,” Trump added."

The seeds of dementia are sown waaay before it is diagnosed, generally. My dad had it in his late 60s and was passing those types of cognitive tests that Trump boasts about "acing" while he had quite clearly already lost a lot of marbles and too dangerous to be off farming on his own.. By the time he was far gone enough for diagnosis he was only a couple of years away from a dementia nursing home and death followed a couple of years after that.

I know. I am quite ashamed looking back. But I did not expect any of this. At all.

^I've made a couple of typos above. Oh well. At least I didn't refer to Gavin Newsome as POTUS, call dyslexia a learning disability and wimble on about gold curtains when everyone else is talking about something else.

Honestyboxy · 24/03/2026 21:20

Meadowfinch · 08/03/2026 07:55

Because a lot of Americans think he's great. They like the idea that the US is "kicking ass".
They have so little exposure to the world outside their own borders they don't know what they are talking about, and their education on world politics is almost zero.

Just think about Trump's idiotic statement that the war has already been won. Iran won't roll over no matter what Trump wants. He's just an ignorant bully. The repercussions of this war will echo around the region for decades, causing new terrorist factions, which will all need addressing.

Unfortunately Trumps grasp of world politics is also zero. He has the vocabulary of a not very bright little boy and speaks as if he’s setting up games of soldiers in his bedroom.

yet you forget one thing, the power of connections and people knowing whats what in advance with the main stock market companies that then enables them to alter course and limit all the effects and even profit of the wars etc the stock market alters while the average joe is having their morning coffee

Because they have a democratic system and unless he illegally stops and election no-one should be trying to overthrow a democratically elected government. It’s what happens in unstable countries and you end up with a situation where governments are overthrown by the people with the most guns.

Anyone lucky enough to be living in a functioning democracy, even if you hate your government needs to appreciate it. I never ever want to live somewhere where its rule by coup. The people who come next are never nice either.

Also you assume he’s wrong about everything because you don’t like him. I don’t like him either but I think that he may actually get some stuff right. Only time will tell.

thats the other puzzlement with the public they all want a democracy until they get a leader they dont like

One thing that surprises me a bit is his support despite things he has said about the military. Considering the general American (possibly especially Republican?) love of war heros, our boys, thank you for your service, excellent drill skills in immaculate uniform and white gloves , saluting the practically sacred flag correctly while the National Anthem is played , bursting with pride over purple hearts and getting arsey about stolen valour and all that...

Well, he got away with the bone spurs thing ok, not ideal, but whatever. But slagging off John McCain for being captured; being a dick to war widows; calling fallen US soldiers suckers and losers; saluting the flag kind of craply when, never having been in the services, he's meant to do the hand on heart thing apparently; and wearing a shit tacky baseball cap when servicemens' bodies are flown home and not even fucking taking it off lest he disturb the ridiculous fluff on his head...I don't know how they stick that attitude. Remove headdress you useless fucker, and fuck off.

usually its because in general you respect the rank / position and not the actual person to a degree
