Anyone else think Starmer leaving just creates more turmoil?

Not impressed by the communications and mishaps but honestly don’t understand how anyone (other than those who just want a general election / Reform etc) would think that his stepping down is going to help anyone?! The country doesn’t need more turmoil!!!! Ffs!

I appreciate there have been mishaps but why do they think anyone else would do better, especially in foreign policy where he has been the adult in the room. There are no clear standout candidates lining up- all are problematic. Why waste this massive majority?! A new leader would then really have to call a GE, and then they would lose possibly to Reform!

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!!

Seems like Rayner has just given Starmer 'her full support'. Wonder how long for? May elections are only 3 months away ...

Probably right up until the HMRC clears her, and then she’ll switch.

I'd be very glad to see his aims for assisted suicide, abortion, and home-education fall by the wayside.

But I agree that the country needs stable government and leadership, especially in an unstable world.

A PP described him as "the grown up in the room". Angels Rayner seems the exact opposite and I dread the thought of her being PM. She'd be a poor leader for the country, and would make a Reform Government almost guaranteed.

I quite like Rayner, it would be great to have a working class woman as PM. Burnham seemed fairly decent too. But now is not the time for this shite.

I'm pissed off at the lot of them for all the fucking infighting.

I wanted grown ups.

This just illustrates how utterly dire our system for selecting politicians and candidates in this country is -both at local level and nationally.

There are 69 million people in this country. SIXTY NINE MILLION. Think of that.

Yet we are in a situation where people are thinking the current guy (who is intelligent and has a track record of non-political achievement) is no good and there is no one else any good to replace him.

We probably all know people who would be better but they have zero chance of being selected as a candidate at all.

Think of it this way - when did you last vote for an independent candidate in a local election? Chances are the independent candidates are good people with a strong commitment to a local area who really care about where they live and are not driven by self interest or climbing a poltiical party pole. They will NEVER get elected unless they are celebrities because no one knows who they are and they don't have the financial backing of a party machine to go out and leaflet and get PR. It's absolutely tragic.

HappydaysArehere · 09/02/2026 17:48

For goodness sake leave him alone. If he goes and his so called replacements attempt to do better then the pathway to disaster is clearly laid out. Anyone who thinks Reform is the answer needs to think carefully. Who strove to drive the vote for Brexit and spent his time insulting the EU Parliament? Who wants to do away with the NHS? Pay for your prescriptions, operations etc.Who wants to open the door for American business to walk in and replace the NHS? It would definitely suit Trump.
Also Farage is Trump’s “Bestie” and he has repeated several times he admires Putin. Ask the constituents of Reform held Councils what they think. The answer would be that they were lied to about how they would run things so well that council tax would be reduced. The opposite has happened. It’s so easy to promise so much when you don’t have to deliver.

cramptramp · 09/02/2026 17:58

I agree. And if Rayner makes a bid to become leader we’ll be a laughing stock to the rest of the world. IMO 😁

CambridgeCats · 09/02/2026 17:59

Also just look at the reaction of the financial markets when there was a wobble this afternoon. They’ve now bumped back up with speculation he’s safe for now. We do not need this instability.

Oh really, and who is a general election going to offer us who is so much better can I ask?

A choice for us to choose from. Labour repeatedly called for general election when the tories kept swapping leaders nownthey will be hypocrites themselves

We vote these people if if the leaders goes we shiukd have a choice to decide who should lead this country.

upinaballoon · 09/02/2026 18:00

I'm an anyone else who thinks we don't need a resignation from him at present. There's enough turmoil without adding more.

Semper in excreto sumus: sed profundum vareat. We are always in the quagmire: only the depth varies. We're deep enough for the present.

I’m sick of all the drama. Why is the focus on him and not Trump or Farage who hung out with Epstein?

Ita just the right wing press having a go. There was a young on GB News of all things asking if he should go. And the majority said he should stay much to the disgust of the presenters. And this is GB news

I want him to stay. They are doing some good stuff.

So true! Imagine the Labour left force Starmer out due to Epstein and we end up with Farage who was actually FRIENDS with Epstein. I'm no Starmer fan but he's miles better than Nigel.

LizzieSiddal · 09/02/2026 18:03

Agre with you OP, he needs to be left alone to get on with it. I do think he’s made mistakes and misjudgements but at the moment he’s the best of a bad bunch.

She's got a lovely complexion and a substantial bosom. They'd like her.

Edited for spelling.

PropertyD · 09/02/2026 18:10

Starmer is hopeless and not a politician however he is the best of a bad bunch.

Says it all about the Labour Party. How some posters can try and defend him is beyond me. He cannot be enjoying this. He is not cut out for politics.

Obviouslynotallthere · 09/02/2026 18:12

I want him to get on with the job. Sniping and creating drama by backbenchers never end well

anotheranonanon · 09/02/2026 18:13

Livingonbananabread · 09/02/2026 17:15

@ThisDandyWriter what are you talking about? No one has suggested Mandelson is a paedophile. He was friends with Epstein, accepted money from him, enjoyed the lifestyle benefits of friendship with him, and shared information with him. All appalling, but there’s been no indication he was involved sexually with anyone procured or trafficked by JE.

Basically a known traitor and spy. Great judgment on the part of our government.

PropertyD · 09/02/2026 18:15

What on earth has happened to politics? How have we got to this? A bunch of losers in charge.

That’s about right. We have a government from a party of hopeless fools. It doesn’t matter which fool comes forward to take over from Starmer. They’re all shit.

So better to stick with the shitty fool we know.

HauntedBungalow · 09/02/2026 18:20

I think we've kind of got into the habit of swapping Prime Ministers every couple of weeks and have forgotten that actually it's pretty unusual to do so.

Starmer isn't great domestically and hasn't properly apologised but for international diplomacy generally he is very good and that's important right now.

I'd much rather we got rid of the bloody royal family than the PM, over Epstein.

PinterandPirandello · 09/02/2026 18:26

It was always going to be a huge task turning around the shitshow ship of 14 years of Tory plundering. Labour needs more time and if he resigns, the country will almost inevitably fall to Reform and certain chaos. Starmer is the most experienced prime minister we’ve had for a long time and does have integrity.

Hmm, I make a point of reading the manifestos of the local independent candidates because I’m a bit politically homeless and would happy vote for one if their policies appealed.

Round here at least, they are universally absolutely batshit (literally think aliens are coming to save us, or think we should move to a fundamentalist Christian theocracy subsistence farming model, or incels, or cross-burning racists, or in favour of some sort of African separatist movement). Maybe you are lucky and have some sane candidates, but anyone willing to throw their deposit away to campaign on a single issue is at least fairly obsessive.

The Wes Streeting / Peter Mandelson messages are extremely damning for the government.

They show ministers were lying when they were publicly praising the economy last year - both of them were secretly saying the economy is in a mess and Reeves has no plan for growth.

They were also acknowledging that they can't tell voters a reason to vote Labour that's actually true.
