I've only seen one person talking out against him regarding Greenland. I know this can't be representative to reality. But I wonder what the media is controlling

What's going on in America?

Im not convinced that in general uk citizen are any more aware of world wide news than US citizens and it isn't to do with passport ownership.

86% of brits have passports but on world news if you sat a brit next to an American I doubt there would be much difference in world news knowledge.

I think the reason brits have passports is to experience a hot holiday, not widen their world wide view

I agree with this. If passport ownership was a real mark of world awareness and an interest in foreign policy, I suspect we'd still be part of the EU.

BIossomtoes · 21/01/2026 12:25

Thank you @nylon2026, your first paragraph is exactly the point I was making. Why did I mention bloody passports? I should have known someone would fixate on it.

If that were true, I think as a polity our position on the Greenland issue wouldn't be consistent with the rest of Europe and some of the world. The UK can't really afford to be that ignorant to the whims and political/economic position of our greatest trading partner - the EU! The wider world you may have a point although the UK is demographically diverse which naturally makes it less insular.

I'm American, but I don't fully understand your post. I'm sorry I didn't see this earlier, as I think it's pointless to answer in a thread with over 300 replies - but what the hell.

I don't know what you mean by "I've only seen one person talking out." Do you mean someone you know personally in the U.K.? Do you mean an American politician on television? Do you mean an American in an online forum?

The forum I'm mainly in, Craigslist, is bristling with fury at Trump. The television I watch is full of professional condemning him, and the comics are mocking him mercilessly. So I don't think the media is controlling anything, except for the media that specifically panders to Trump (like Fox).

I really think here it is time for Denmark to step down here and seek Greenland for the sake of the greater geopolitical picture in a world where power counts. If Trump is determined to get Greenland and all the signals point that way then in reality he will get it. We in the UK are poised to suffer some economic harm as tariffs are placed on us and we have to ask for UK citizens is getting involved in this colonial power play over an arctic land mass really in our best jnterests? Surely our best interest lies in ensuring the US remains a steadfast economic and military ally by acquiesing on this issue although it is painful.

In reality we are just setting up ourselves for humiliation as Europeans by potentially watching US troops land in Greenland, bloodlesly taking the taking the Island, and have to face the fact that the US is still the backbone of western security so NATO will stand and we go back to the status quo.

Just so you know, we here in America do not fucking want the world to cave! Please stand strong! If he bloody tries to take Greenland by force, I’d volunteer for the Danish army to fight back!

Day to day, nothing has changed here. I live in a liberal state, DH and I are high earners so not reliant on any kind of state help.

We and most people we know are disgusted and nervous for the future but I would say still in quite an abstract way.

Same, of course there are the absolute morons, even on here, but I am surrounded by people absolutely horrified by what’s happening.

Does Trump want Greenland or Iceland? He seems not to know they are different countries! Holy fuck, I mean what the hell?

mids2019 · 22/01/2026 06:51

Hasn't trump pulled off the art of the deal? He seems to have ended up with more rights to Greenland through some very unorthodox diplomacy. From an angry EU to a smiling Rutte!

He will probably end up with what he wants, yes. Which is mineral rights in exchange for putting American military presence back. With zero capital expenditure (other than military).

He has lost America a lot in the process though. Not sure if he cares.

wiffin · 22/01/2026 07:03

Rutte is either the ultimate politician or the ultimate appeaser. I can't quite work out what.

lljkk · 22/01/2026 07:33

It sounds like TACO has ended up with exactly what DK offered & wanted (re Gnlnd access) although TACO will claim he got big concessions. TACO is being vague in details to delay / obscure scrutiny as late as possible, also until other big bombs are going off in his news cycle.

This is Zia Yousef talking on GB news yesterday… if there was ever a clearer indication needed that this is exactly what will happen in the UK then this is it. Our current problems have all been manufactured to enable their agenda.

He sounds very sinister and everyone’s just standing by and watching. I’m pretty speechless.

Yeah but even now there seems to be a lot of denial online. ‘’It won’t happen here’’ type talk. They are getting more and more comfortably overt with it now I have noticed. We’ve been shouting about who they are for a long while but now they’re starting to say it out loud.

Ultimate politician.

His put down of Trump re Afghanistan was artful. Trump didn’t even bluster back.

I find the Europe is being treated by the States to be intolerable. The way they are making us out to be duty-dodging freeloaders is a disgrace. We have gone above and beyond to support the States, at huge human and financial cost to each of our countries. To be honest had we not got involved with their ‘mission in the Middle East’ then 500 of our British service personnel would be alive today, 7/7 and many of our other terror attacks would not have happened, we wouldn’t be facing such high levels of immigration from the destabilised ME, the whole thing has cost an absolute fortune in money and human life. Our terror threat is forever raised.

I do query why a five star, formidable, gigantic military with all the bells and whistles and $1 trillion budget even needs the military help of countries like Denmark and Italy.

You know absolutely nothing about me other than who I voted for in one election.

why are you so unnecessarily judgemental.

why is Mumsnet full of such toxic horrendous people?

I don’t judge you for voting DJT but I judge anyone who, against all reasoning and evidence, continues to defend his lunacy which is increasing every single day.

His last term was bad, but nothing like this.

Americans are buying into a completely false narrative that Europeans are sneaky, disloyal freeloaders who secretly laugh at the States and clamour for a new world order run by anti-West radicals and communists.

It’s a lie. Like the States we have a small handful of crazies and an immigration problem but that doesn’t mean the issues are not overblown. Most people in the UK are slightly to the right of centre, but not in an extreme or hateful fashion.

explanationplease · 22/01/2026 11:53

@Teanbiscuits33Many working class people do like them, which is a great worry. And I know for certain that younger people are being led towards them online. I don’t know where. I heard a 14 year old going on about them yesterday , in a friend’s house. I was very surprised. People who are against them need to articulate in those places and a lot of other places what the arguments against Reform are, succinctly and clearly. I’m not really seeing it, as there’s too much denial.

nylon2026 · 22/01/2026 11:55

I'm waiting for the Trump fans to come along and defend the ICE detention of a 5 year old.

I’m slightly to the right of centre, and I think Reform are an absolute disgrace. Cunning, treacherous, corrupt and just all round awful.

I have hope that their slavish devotion to Trumpism is currently showing itself up. Even the Daily Mail commenters seem to be realising this is what happens when you put far right ‘personalities’ in charge.

Well I hear of a lot. There are many arguments against them but we are not making them well, or to all audiences. Brexit wa a case of people being left behind and not even debated with, and here we are again.

But it would be interesting at this point to know if even for Trumpers, they agree specifically that it's a commendable idea to kidnap a head of state in the absence of war, or if it's a commendable idea to threaten allies to let you to encroach on their territory.
