Trump taking over Greenland?

Cantonet · 06/01/2026 10:50

Will anyone stop him?
What will Nato do?
What will Denmark do?
Are there plans in motion to stop this other than friendly diplomacy & gentle words?

It’s a lot of whataboutery over nothing. There has been absolutely no indication that Trump is going to invade Greenland fgs. Smoke and mirrors comes to mind…..

Europe might turn against the US..

You must be very young....

US saved Europe from the Nazis. (My parents went through it).

Anyway, this is about Greenland. Trump is scary and off his rocker

The war was all but won at the point the USA condescended to join following Pearl Harbour. HTH

The WH has said "The president and his team are discussing a range of options to pursue this important foreign policy goal, and of course, utilizing the US military is always an option at the Commander-in-Chief's disposal."

WTF?

That's bilge.

The USA didn't join until it was in it's interest to do so, right enough, but it's completely untrue that the "war was all but won."

D-Day landings slipped your mind?

Or you're not from the UK or any other country involved in that part of the war, and just don't really know about them?

Why would Trump pay for something if he thinks he can/should get it for free?

Buying a country is just … nuts! Plus Greenland is not for fucking sale.

it would never be boots on the ground, it would be behind the scenes with strings

Yes but “President Vance” is hardly a reassuring thought. What if he made Miller VP 😱

I'm not sure if this is good news or bad news, but he can't 'make' Miller VP - that can only happen if he runs for president with Miller as the vp candidate on the ticket (God forbid).

If Trump has a medical emergency (i.e. is finally sectioned), there is a line of succession. Mike Johnson, speaker of the house becomes VP. If he is unable to, which is possible - how does the man stand upright with no spine? Chuck Grassley, a spring chicken at 92 (and he looks and sounds every day of it) is next.

Unsurprisingly, while there are degrees of awfulness at play, none of this is particularly reassuring.

Greenland developments; a German frigate has been sent to patrol the waters and the Canadians are opening an embassy there. The Saxony with 250 personnel part of the NATO group.

I’m not very young and I believe the US could well become isolated in the world. Sucking up to Trump is turning out to be pointless. WW2 is irrelevant here. The US is a very different beast now and one of Trump’s cronies (or even family members) may follow him into office. Therefore, we can’t assume they will become any more NATO friendly in the future.

But the White House has repeatedly said that the decision in America acquiring Greenland is solely in the hands of the people of Greenland, 85% of whom do not want to be under American rule, so it’s a none starter. The only reason this subject is coming up again is following the Venezuelan situation. It’s just a lot of scaremongering.

The reason the subject's come up again is that this is what they said this afternoon

“Trump has made it well known that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority of the United States…Utilizing the U.S. Military is always an option at the Commander in Chief’s disposal,” Karoline Leavitt told CNN

They already have a military base there, why not just negotiate expansion. I'm also a bit unsure on what attack on greenland would look like. There is nothing to attack there. Basically usa could show up and declare that they will take over and Denmark will either do something or more likely, won't.

Indeed. The US don't even need to negotiate all that much too, because it has already been offered, start of last year.

Denmark Says Open to Expanding US Military Role in Greenland (1) (bgov.com)

It has never been an issue. Greenlanders have not been in the street protesting against Thule AFB. It's not like Okinawa where the US military bases have a big impact on the local population, because Thule has no local population. It's in the middle of nowhere and is totally self contained.

And remember, the Americans managed to lose a Nuke in the sea off Thule in 1968. That nuke was never recovered, but it was resolved politically.

Denmark Says Open to Expanding US Military Role in Greenland (1)

Denmark is ready to allow the US to boost its presence in Greenland, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said as she seeks to curb an escalating diplomatic crisis with the Trump administration over the world’s largest island.

I’m not sure there’s a lot anyone could do about it. Unfortunately the USA has one of the largest most powerful technologically advanced military forces in the world.

They know they ca do what they like. It would be a gift to Putin if NATO countries start fighting each other.

Honestly it might start WW3 - or he might get away with it and just get a firm telling off.

Edited

Just said this to a MAGA , except they hadn’t banked on Europe, s America commonwealth & blue states joining Canada against them.

Orangemintcream · 06/01/2026 21:41

White House have just gone on record saying they want it and haven’t ruled out the use of the military.

Edited

I don't think they're bluffing. Trump and Miller are unhinged. Trump has never been a fan of NATO so won't care if this action causes it's collapse.

Ihavelostthegame · 07/01/2026 01:42

I’m not entirely convinced the US military would actually carry out an invasion on Greenland. It well known that much of the upper ranks can’t stand Pete Hegseth or the rest of the orange morons cabinet. It’s all very well saying they would have to but I’m not so sure.
It also wouldn’t go down well with much of the MAGA base. Trump was supposed to be the No Wars guy. And an unprovoked attack on a nation that posed no threat to the US would be hard for them to justify. Trumps approval ratings are falling by the minute.

Of course they could. They just need a couple of platoons flown in, They only have a couple of airports that can handle larger planes.

@RedTagAlan I think you misunderstood my post. I don’t dispute that the US could take Greenland! Of course they could! But in order to do it you need a willing armed forces. I’m just not sure there will be appetite for this within the US forces. If the military refuse to engage then what? Are Hegseth, Miller and Vance going to march in and take Greenland themselves?

Ultimately this could be the tipping point in the US.

Sorry. Yes I get your point. It's about obeying potentially l illegal orders.

I think there are enough military MAGAS, unfortunately. He already sacked the commander of Thule. Trump does like his purges.

  1. Trump isn't going to get a second term. He is trying to leave a legacy, because why not in his mind. He has nothing to lose, people here already hate him.
  2. The US is headed into a recession, and military spending will go against that. War = military spend.
  3. Could it be yet another distraction from the Epstein files??? Yeah.
  1. He's been saying for quite a while that he will be there for a 3rd term!! It's scary.
  1. There is so much money behind him it is unreal. Note, he has some of the richest people on earth in his pocket. Even if they don't agree with him, they do not have armies or arms to supply to others readily, just the dollars.
  1. It may well be, but I actually don't think he gives a fuck, he knows he is well protected for those as is bearing out.
