Trump taking over Greenland?

Cantonet · 06/01/2026 10:50

Will anyone stop him?
What will Nato do?
What will Denmark do?
Are there plans in motion to stop this other than friendly diplomacy & gentle words?

I suppose Danes will know an invasion is coming when they find their F35 jets have been remotely switched off.

The Brits could send a carrier of course, loaded with F35 jets ( also switched off).

Trump is a Moron. He is doing massive damage to his countries defense industry with this. He has turned the USA into a rogue nation.

ShesTheAlbatross · 06/01/2026 11:42

No one could stop them.

Stephen Miller sounded insane last night “what right does Denmark have to Greenland?? The US should have it!” You cannot put those sentences together without either being a liar or a raving lunatic. He’s both.

Orangemintcream · 06/01/2026 12:17

I’m not sure there’s a lot anyone could do about it. Unfortunately the USA has one of the largest most powerful technologically advanced military forces in the world.

They know they ca do what they like. It would be a gift to Putin if NATO countries start fighting each other.

Honestly it might start WW3 - or he might get away with it and just get a firm telling off.

Fearfulsaints · 06/01/2026 20:14

I understand why the US wants Greenland.

I cant work out if they hope to end nato at the same time as gaining Greenland or if its all a bluff to just have all more bases on Greenland within nato.

I know they arent keen on funding nato but do they actually want it to collapse

HappyFace2025 · 06/01/2026 20:15

I'm guessing Trump thinks the US doesn't need NATO?

Thoseslippers · 06/01/2026 20:19

I dont think it will happen tbh..
It's too much if a gamble. It's not an unstable government.
Whilst it might be a popular move with MAGA its likely to be deeply unpopular across the world amongst most people because thers hardly any justification for it. Yes it might benefit the US but that's literally it, there's no moral spin he could put on it..
I do worry if he did do it there's not much anyone could do to actively stop him.. but there's a chance it would cause WW3. Because Europe might turn against the US.. and im not sure how that would play out. There are many places that hate the US and would love to see its downfall. China, Russia.. would they side with Trump or see it as an opportunity to get rid of him?
Whatever happens it would be incredibly dangerous
So overall I dont actually think he will go through with it

Merlinis · 06/01/2026 20:22

I don’t understand why they don’t just ask Greenland for whatever they want nicely and pay for it?

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 06/01/2026 20:30

The US already has a military base there. It's part of the deal of being in NATO (as I understand it). Happy to be corrected if not the case.

And they've tried asking nicely. They couldn't find a single Greenlander who wanted to meet the VP when he went.

It's Trumps old fashioned bullying imperialism that he thinks equals greatness.

Why would Trump pay for something if he thinks he can/should get it for free?

CandlelitKitchen · 06/01/2026 20:40

It would be interesting to hear on here from American posters.

joeninetey · 06/01/2026 20:41

Barely believable if it's really true.......Is it true, will he just go there and take it, in the 21st century ? Don't congress have any power to stop yet another mad man ? Mad yes, but still very very cool, even at his advanced age ?!

Maybe some sort of double bluff aimed at Putin ? I also doubt whether the US could be so monumentally stupid.

ImWearingPantaloons · 06/01/2026 20:44

Very very cool?

Maybe on reflection that's not the best choice of word.

Overtheatlantic · 06/01/2026 20:46

I think it’s imminent. Trump is immoral and corrupt, and so is everyone in his administration. His actions are creating a very dangerous future for America. I’m American living in England.

Fearfulsaints · 06/01/2026 20:47

Is there merit to the idea that trump is just rattling for a vote of independence in greenland where they then just negotiate thier own deal with usa

Cool? 🙄

Overtheatlantic · 06/01/2026 20:52

Also, it’s not a double bluff and Europe won’t go to war over it. Europe has its hands full with Ukraine. And Putin is sane, and not riddled with mental decline. How do you change the conversation, away from domestic failures? Invade a country, start a war, kidnap the Venezuelan president.

Playingvideogames · 06/01/2026 20:53

Trump is absolutely ruthless in seeing his job as ‘POTUS’ and acting in the naked financial interest of the USA alone. I felt the presidents before him - both Democrat and Republican - had something of an understanding that, as well as loyalty to the USA, as the most powerful politician in the world they had a duty to be considerate of other countries and not use their status to bully them.

It’s very difficult explaining to Trump supporters why being a smaller, less rich, less powerful country is not a moral failing or a sign that you need to be moulded into something else. Ultimately the USA loves its status as the most powerful country in the world - I’m sure they don’t actually want competition.

I do think however we have made tragic errors in the direction of our own country over the last 20 years, leading us to a place where we have no choice but to kiss Trump’s backside. We’ve chosen to spend all our money on health and benefits, and enormous concessions such as COL payment and furlough. We have neglected our infrastructure, military and business conditions to such an extent we have our pants down and wouldn’t last a week without the military protection of the States and leaning on our ties. Leaving the EU was utterly foolish too.

We have to face up to the fact we are unable to stand up to him party through our own decisions.

Cool? WTAF?! He’s a fucking lunatic - a vile bully of a man. There is literally not one cool thing about him 🤬

I think Trump actually could be this monumentally stupid - he’s insane. Literally. It’s incredibly frightening.

Denmark has already been clear that it’s open to a larger US presence on Greenland. And there used to be far far more US troops there, but the US reduced the numbers.

hollytheheroic · 06/01/2026 21:01

Didnt they say today that nobody was going to go to war with the US over Greenland and I thought, well you may be surprised. It seems to me this is where we should draw the line. We will get our arses handed to us but you can't just let them take another country's territory.

Fearfulsaints · 06/01/2026 21:02

Im not sure he is insane. I think he is focused 100% on usa interest. Writing him off as insane makes him difficukt to understand what he is doing and why.

I cant quite get to grips with why nato is of no use to them anymore.

FieldOfBeans · 06/01/2026 21:02

🤦🏻‍♀️😂
