Conservatives closing the gap on reform

Pinkponyclub3 · 21/12/2025 01:23

Any conservative supporters here ?
Recent reports say the gap on reform is closing
Having watched some clips of kemi in action,I was quite impressed
But I don't know much about the party having never voted conservative,
Have they more of an insight in to current feeling than labour?

Can't argue with facts or figures!

Immigration has fallen under Labour, not the Tories.

Its fallen due to Tory policies though.

No, it is not, fallen due to Labour policies, Labour are in power now, have been for 18months.

Its on them now, isn't that what right wing posters keep telling us?

Pacificsunshine · 05/01/2026 09:53

I think it’s a case by case basis, based on the particular facts.

Can you make a credible case that Labour actions/ decisions have brought down immigration?

BIossomtoes · 05/01/2026 09:16

Again: what have Labour introduced?

Key Changes (July - December 2025)
Skilled Worker Route:
Higher Skill Level: Increased required skill level for most jobs from RQF Level 3 (A-Level) to RQF Level 6 (Graduate level).

Salary Thresholds: Increased salary requirements for Skilled Worker, Global Business Mobility, and Scale-up visas.

Care Workers: Stopped new Health & Care Worker visa applications for overseas social care workers (SOC codes 6135, 6136) from July 2025.

Immigration Salary List (ISL) & Temporary Shortage List (TSL): Introduced these for some jobs below degree level, but with no dependants allowed for TSL roles.

Family & Private Life (Appendix FM):
New Suitability Rules: Stricter 'good character' requirements, including mandatory refusal for serious criminal convictions (12+ months prison) and tougher rules for immigration breaches.

Financial/Sponsorship Costs:
Increased Immigration Skills Charge (ISC):Raised for sponsors from December 2025.

Illegal Working:
Expanded rules to cover contractors and gig workers.

Upcoming (Early 2026)
English Language Requirement: Increased to B2 (Upper Intermediate) level for most work-related visas from January 8, 2026, including Skilled Worker and Scale-up routes, impacting dependants too.

Overall Goal
These changes stem from the May 2025 White Paper, "Restoring Control," aiming to significantly reduce net migration and tighten eligibility for legal routes, according to DLA Piper and Richmond Chambers.

And, more recently, Labour have been instrumental in the UK rejoining the Erasmus program.

I did see a rather apt online comment about that. A DM-reading Brexiteer foolishly posted that rejoning Eramus was a "betrayl [sic] of brexit", only to be further humiliated by the next poster who gently pointed out "Oh there's no need to worry; Erasmus is all about education, so it won't affect you in the least".

Typical smug snobbery. The left looking down on the working classes. I would have kept quiet about that one, PP....

Rejoining Erasmus will cost a bomb. There is a reasonable argument that we could have supported study abroad more cost effectively.

Nothing to do with class or snobbery (although, on that, I'm pretty sure that those who adhere to the left of the political spectrum not only can be working class but have been historically defined by it).

The post I refer to isn't anti-working class, as you have mistakenly supposed; it is a direct result to the imbecility of the original poster; a humourous, witty application of common sense to an absurdly close-minded comment.
The fact you have immediately interpreted as an attack on the working class by the left, I fear, speaks volumes.

Please do link us to

  1. The fiscal data that shows Erasmus will "cost a bomb"
  2. The facts behind your assertion that we could have supported overseas study more cost-effectively than the costs involved in Erasmus (see 1)

No. Its a smug superior response to someone that hasn't benefitted from as good and education as you or I. Everyone is allowed an opinion and shouldn't be mocked for the way it was expressed. That post was awful.

Half the trouble is the comprehensive system (introduced by Labour) has failed to educate vast swathes of the electorate. Thats not their fault and they shouldnt be laughed at when they are trying to articulate their own opinion.

Why couldnt the poster just have argued the point that was being made rather than being condescending?

Exactly. How does it even do what the person replying probably wants which is for Labour to get in again. They’ve just said this policy is for us not you, they may as well vote Reform then in that case. Own goal.

Immigration has fallen under Labour, not the Tories.

Year ending June 2025

Total Immigration:898,000 (down 31% from the previous year).
Total Emigration: 693,000 (up 7% from the previous year).
Net Migration: 204,000 (down 69% from the previous year).

There's also a net outflow of British citizens, estimated at 109,000 for YE June 2025.

Edited

It’s also that person likely relies on people who do trades or didn’t follow a higher education and it really is off putting to see that kind of sneering.

Nothing 'gentle' about that remark; it's smug, superior, sneering and nasty. (And there should be a comma after the 'Oh'; maybe the person who wrote it isn't as brilliantly educated as s/he thinks s/he is.)

Interesting that you added a '[sic]' after the typo made by someone you call a 'DM-reading Brexiteer', yet failed to notice that you typed 'rejoining Erasmus' as 'rejoning Eramus'. Just gently pointing it out.

fairyring25 · 05/01/2026 16:45

@QuickJadeFinch Rejoining Erasmus is going to cost the UK government £570million. It is much more expensive than the Turing scheme and we cannot afford to be spending money on nice-to-haves when we have a huge budget deficit.

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow
I think finding the right match in terms of work for someone with mental health issues is important. Many jobs can be done from home now and some jobs are more stressful than others. 16% of young people 16-24 years are unemployed in the UK and I don't think we are doing them any favours by setting them up for a life on benefits.

How do you know that DM contributor was left of centre?

Erasmus is open to all, inc working class, and benefits UK Uni's in that we get the best of EU students studying here, many chose to stay, working in our skills scarce economy.

Sounds like you think the Working Classes should stay in their lane....

No. Ive already explained why I thought it was an awful snobby comment upthread so may I refer you to my previous answer.

I read your reasoning and subsequent remark, still sounds like you think the less educated should stay where they are.
You re making assumptions, you don't know either their political beliefs or if they are "WC" in fact even calling someone WC is snobbery personified.

Erasmus is now open to a huge range of learners, in areas perhaps more heavily represented by the so called working classes.

You've misunderstood. Probably deliberately.

What did you think of the original DM quote? Did you think it hilarious too like the PP?

No, still reads like you think the person making this comment should stay where they are BUT i don't think you meant it that way.

Why even assume WC ? what does that even mean now a days?

On the comment, Honestly?

I thought the original comment was stupid and was worthy of the reply, which i didn't think was hilarious at all, but was what my Gran would have called "Quick"

Now one for you! Do you think that re joining Erasmus is a betrayal of Brexit?

Moving on, I do find it amusing that many on the right, want a new GE, with 1 poster wanting Trump to "Take out Starmer" based on "We were lied too"

But the Brexit Referendum result is forever.

Southernecho · 06/01/2026 08:19

Just because someone sees something differently, doesn't mean they are twisting the comment
I don't agree with class definitions, to me they are designed to keep people in their lane.

Most blatantly done with Rayner, though she hardly helped herself (though she tried!)
