Rachel Reeves - potential successor?

GroundZero · 29/11/2025 16:27

Apparently, the Tories have launched a petition www.sackreeves.com urging the PM to sack the Chancellor, after she was accused of misleading the public over the state of the UK’s finances.

If she is sacked, who could/should replace her?

Well the Tory’s used it for a good 6 or 7 years when they got in , so what’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

So we shouldn't try to do better? A PP said we should
Considering Labour said they would end the chaos etc

So, no Labour positives then?

Come on, there must be something…

They did better though in terms of keeping the electorate on side. Surely you can see Labour are not.

Tory ‘temerity’ versus Labour fiscal mendacity and incompetence adversely impacting millions.

Not really comparable, is it?

You have a short memory.

redwinecheeseandothersnacks · 29/11/2025 19:20

Sorry..sat watching Strictly with my children. More important than arguing with the right-wing branch of MN. You will all say that I am running away because I know Labour are doomed. That's fine you are entitled to your opinions - I'm just glad effort has been made to take children out of poverty.

Oh come on, Labour ran the election on lies of "fully costed manifesto", ending chaos and brining trust back to politics.
Remind me how all of that is going?

upinaballoon · 29/11/2025 19:21

Tories = more than one Tory, many Tories

Tory's = of one Tory

GroundZero · 29/11/2025 19:24

orangewasp · 29/11/2025 19:20

You have a short memory.

As does the chancellor.

A selective memory, may be more accurate.

Still, at least the ‘grown ups’ are in charge now, right?

Thanks for that.

You believe that the funding will reach the children concerned? (Feel free to answer, or not, after SCD).

Do you mean Labour with this?

Violetparis · 29/11/2025 19:28

After the lies from Boris Johnson I expected and wanted better from Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves. I'm disillusioned with the lot of them.

You do know what "her background in economics" actually entailed?

She literally lied on her cv / LinkedIn profile - she was in customer complaints.

She has about as much experience as my DS23 - well actually he has more because he has an economic degree and real life work experience already.

Would this be similar ( although not chancellor) to suella braverman as attorney general whose legal background appeared to be somewhat less than long or distinguished and certainly ‘not what she had on the CV’ - and I fail to see why a spell in Sunaks case at Goldman Sachs’s suddenly means you are the fount of all economic experience and George Osborne had no relevant experience at all . It appears if it’s Labour it’s fair game to carp from the sidelines , if it’s the Tory’s well who gives a shit so long as they are a friend of Binkys etc !

Oh now come on. MN was full of anti-Tory threads over the 14 years. Some extremely vicious, especially during and straight after the election. The name calling against anyone perceived to be "Tory" was horrendous at times.
Labour had 14 years to prepare and what have they delivered? Nasty, divisive rhetoric and policies.

twistyizzy · 29/11/2025 19:33

Labour could have chosen to try to unite people, instead they have created more division.

Braverman was ultimately sacked, for something considerably less significant than Reeves’s almost pathological lying.

Sunak’s CV encompassed not just GS, by elsewhere including a hedge fund - point is, he had sharp end commercial experience, unlike the Labour cabinet.

They want to focus on anything except reality - the reality that Reeves is wholly out of her depth, and is in hock to the back benches. Probably explains the serial lying.

You’re kidding on this. As if mn hasn’t been vitriolic for some time. In any case some experience might have stopped the ridiculous and damaging anti business policies from Labour. Hospitality, NI, day one rights overturned. Why back them to this extent?

goudacheese · 29/11/2025 19:39

For me Liz Kendal as I like her views and she takes a hard line on welfare. Wes Streeting seems ok too. Referring to a budget deficit as a black hole is very unprofessional and sums up that RR is not up to the job.

She doesn’t have the requisite expertise for the role, as we have seen. But neither does anybody else in the party. There’s no natural successor to the role.

Crikeyalmighty · 29/11/2025 19:44

@GroundZero not for that long - you would certainly have thought it would have given him the sense not to lend to every Tom dick and Harry without any due diligence whatsoever and then 100% government back it - but then again GS is basically gambling with other peoples cash , not your company’s or your own- and I have worked in that sector- you don’t have to be amazingly able commercially , just the right connections , right university and exams to get in ( regardless of subject) and often right school

Thank you.

That’s obviously no reason to cling to Reeves (I know she tried to play the bond markets card, previously).

Yes this

SpottyAardvark · 29/11/2025 19:45

For the Tories, the party which was led by Johnson & Truss to accuse anyone of misleading the public is nauseating shameless hypocrisy.

Reeves delivered a budget which reassured the Bond markets that this government is prepared to make difficult decisions & isn’t going to repeat Truss’s catastrophic mistakes. They have confidence in her, and she is going nowhere.

Totally wrong Yvette cooper does - she’s PPE Oxford, Harvard and an economist - top that - I can only guess she doesn’t want that job- even then I’m sure many of you would find something wrong with that background
