@Nat172 you seem to want to question the legitimacy of the result. How do you explain away the near doubling in turnout compared to the last mayoral election? However you feel about Mamdani, people turned out to vote. And he is the first to get over 1 million votes.

The man’s a menace. Very bad news for New York. I despair.

Wasn't Priti Patel born of Ugandan immigrants.

Jesus thank GOD we don’t have to listen to that evil menace bang on any more!

Knife crime and theft on the up.

Not true - overall crime has been reduced in London, though trends vary by offense type. Recent data shows a significant drop in violent crime with injury, fewer homicides, and reductions in specific offenses like knife and gun crime over certain periods, supported by targeted police action and prevention programs.

George Orwell was born in India at a time when it was still part of the British Empire, so technically not an immigrant. No idea where JL was born but presumably that would also have been during the empire.

I think military bases also have a slightly different legal status (like embassies).

Otherwise, yep of course people born overseas who move here later in life are immigrants. Depending on the two countries, they may not be entitled to a passport in their parents’ home country, and often wouldn’t be able to pass on citizenship to their own children. Which is why many people decide to go back to their original country to give birth.

If you think they aren’t immigrants, does that mean that people born to eg Indian parents here are still Indian and not British? Because I’d say they are definitely British.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Saint George was born in Cappadocia, which is in modern-day Turkey. While he was a soldier in the Roman army, his birthplace was the Roman province of Cappadocia, and he is also considered to have had a Palestinian mother, making him ethnically complex.

Just disagreeing for the sake of it.

Do not agree with most on here and do not share your joy.
I think it’s terrible news for NY. Same way that I hate every policy Khan has brought into London.

Wonderful news! As a Londoner who voted for Khan x 3, I hope he'll soon warmly welcome Mamdani for a visit 🤗

I would imagine Khan is straight in his Dms! And rightly so.

Years ago I joined a call for some global mayors event . It was amazing to us moderate brits how many of the 🇺🇸 mayors were table thumping lefties. Smaller cities admittedly, US politics is quite varied at the local level.

You don't like improved air quality and fewer child deaths? Interesting!

So pretty much a perfect patron saint for England (a country that is also ethnically complex) then.

That is akin to asking an ECHR sceptic what human rights they hate. They won't answer because they haven't thought about it.

Boomer55 · 07/11/2025 17:26

My son lives out there. Best wait until they see how good/bad he is.

Pharazon · 21/11/2025 23:20

The Mamdani-Trump meeting is absolutely hilarious. Mamdani has Trump wrapped around his finger. I can imagine Trump’s MAGA base are going to be utterly bewildered by it.

Wallaw1 · 21/11/2025 23:27

I grew up in Manhattan, left for college and law school, then lived there for many years before moving to London.

I think he's brilliant, a breath of fresh air. I'm loving the passing of the torch to a new generation and very much hope he succeeds.

The White House meeting is making my day, although probably not doing the same for the MAGA contingent.

MsAmerica · 28/11/2025 22:14

I think Americans have to stop their delusional beliefs that every little change is a harbinger of a major shift.

Especially in this case, as NYC isn't like anyplace else in the U.S.

SLeighHart · 08/12/2025 22:08

I'm glad that he has no power to do any of the things he promised.

Now this is just delusional. Mamdani doesn't have any power whatsoever.

1dayatatime · 08/12/2025 23:18

I think it's a really good thing for a socialist like Mamdani to get elected every once and a while to positions where the economic damage is limited just to give the next generation of voters first hand experience of why socialism doesn't work.

TooBigForMyBoots · 08/12/2025 23:48

Well Trump is giving American voters loads of economic damage and first hand experience of why populist politics is ruinous for a country.

By the time he's done, right wing politics will destroyed for at least one generation in liberal democracies worldwide.

Well we'll have to wait until 2029 to see who's right on that.
