Really? So the likes of Joanna Lumley, George Orwell, and countless military and diplomatic corps kids are immigrants?

Boris too. He was born in NY.

Edit. Ted Cruz too. He was born in Canada.

waitam · 05/11/2025 16:33

Great to see a good communicator who doesn't use vile language to succeed. He's quite polished also in the ahem.... looks department, couldn't help saying that compared to the other front runners on the ticket. and of course Mr. T himself.

On a more solid note, is there a chance that he could be one of the Dems contenders for President next time, or is there any impediment i.e. where he was born etc.

He is not natural born, so can't be POTUS.

Certainly looks like the beginning of the end. Similar to what we voted in.

George Orwell was born in India at a time when it was still part of the British Empire, so technically not an immigrant. No idea where JL was born but presumably that would also have been during the empire.

I think military bases also have a slightly different legal status (like embassies).

Otherwise, yep of course people born overseas who move here later in life are immigrants. Depending on the two countries, they may not be entitled to a passport in their parents’ home country, and often wouldn’t be able to pass on citizenship to their own children. Which is why many people decide to go back to their original country to give birth.

If you think they aren’t immigrants, does that mean that people born to eg Indian parents here are still Indian and not British? Because I’d say they are definitely British.

MaturingCheeseball · 05/11/2025 16:42

Whatever you think of him, he needs a voice coach. Far too high and squeaky.

Pollqueen · 05/11/2025 16:43

This reminds me of the threads pre the last GE. Everyone so excited and hopeful for a labour govt and look where we are now. Be careful what you wish for!

NellieJean · 05/11/2025 16:47

Might it be an idea to reserve judgement on a man who has never run anything other than his bath before christening him the new JFK. His election is clearly a reaction to Trump but he may find doing things more complicated than promising them. Here we have Farage on one wing and Polanski on another both wildly popular despite neither having any track record on actually delivering.

An immigrant is someone who resides permanently in a country other than their birth country.

So naturalisation is a waste of time then ?

The mess we’re in now is because of 14 years of Tory misrule

dottiehens · 05/11/2025 17:05

I wish NYC lots of luck. Hopefully it does not turn into what London has since Sadiq Khan.

EconomyClassRockstar · 05/11/2025 17:09

NYC is a political bubble. I think it's way more exciting for the Democrats that Mikie Sherrill absolutely decimated Ciattarelli

Its a bit odd to consider a reduced crime rate, better public transport and better services for children as a negative.

Mahmood Mamdani was raised in Uganda and worked for more than a decade at Makerere University, the country's main and oldest university. He met his wife in Kampala while she was researching Mississippi Masala, a film about the expulsion of Asians from Uganda under Idi Amin.

I hope he's well disposed to the UK. My best friend in primary school was a refugee from Amins regime. As were many people who have contributed greatly to the UK since.

Anybody born in India (or indeed any other part of the Empire) when it was part of the Empire was British. Not "British". British

Wasn't Priti Patel born of Ugandan immigrants.

Yup, it's a potential downside of democracy.

Vote for the newcomer who you hope will shake things up, or the seasoned time served politician that you know is already bogged down in the customs and traditions of that trade.

Trump sold himself, and still does, by saying he is not a politician. His position is powerful enough that he rides roughshod over the US constitution. And his fans like that. I don't think the Mayor of NY has that level of power.

The time served "come up through the ranks" politician is more akin to a meritocracy system.

Personally, I prefer the seasoned on the back benches, and the leaders to be the rapid ascenders. Like Obama. Enough experience to know how things can be done, but not worn down to the point of just taking the easiest route.

A child born to Indian parents in the UK is not automatically British. We don't have jus soli in the UK. At least one parent would need to be a UK citizen or to be permanently settled for the child to have citizenship.

There are posted workers all over the world who have children while abroad - those children acquire their parents' citizenship, not the citizenship of their country of birth (unless it is one of the minority of countries, such as the US, that practices jus soli). And those children are absolutely not considered immigrants when they return to their country of citizenship.

Last night's result was great, and not just for the states that voted that voted. It could be beneficial for millions of Americans across the country.

I’m a Londoner and don’t get the Khan love on here. Don’t hate him either, he has made a difference to air pollution which is very important but other than that I struggle to see what he’s done.

Joanna’s grandfather (I think maybe maternal?) was born in India and her father in what is now Pakistan if I remember correctly, so I suppose the argument would be yes they were immigrants?
