What can an individual do to keep Reform out?

I have a young friend (a university student) who is getting depressed about the prospect of Reform getting in next election. He thinks that the UK is fucked, basically. He's left-leaning, I assume a Labour voter. I've advised him to get politically engaged (so that in the future he'll at least be able to feel that he did what he could). He's not the most outgoing of people, though is interested in politics. Can anyone suggest how he could become usefully politically engaged to try to reduce the Reform vote? Not just joining a party and turning up to meetings, but actually doing something?

I think your friend needs to develop some resilience and not get so easily depressed FFS.

A lot of people are as a direct result of Labour's actions so far plus what's yet to come inc digital ID.
You can be as patronising as you like but surely you're not that disengaged from public feeling at the moment? Or, maybe you are.

For goodness' sake I wasn't trying to be patronising I was trying to be nice. I meant it. It is not nice to feel scared.

FrippEnos · 11/10/2025 16:56

What can he do?

Not vote for them
Not call their supporters names
Engage supporters in debate about their concerns
Use facts
Explain how his party of choice is going to tackle the issues brought up

They aren't really points.

Yes they are, you clearly don't understand them.

He can use his own vote. And leave others to decide how to use theirs. That's democracy.

With so much right wing press, both written and social media pushing right wing agenda ( manipulation has been found in Cambridge analytica) how is it democracy

I would agree with you apart from I would replace your words "right wing" with "left wing" .

You’d be wrong. You’re delusional or about as far right as it’s possible to get if you think the media pushes a left wing agenda.

"You're delusional". I think tbat comment just about sums up what is wrong with civility (in the old fashioned sense of the word) in politics these days. An inability to form an argument properly without resorting to insults.

BIossomtoes · 11/10/2025 18:24

It’s an observation not an insult.

No it's an insult. You said I was either "delusional or about as far right as it is possible to get" if I did not agree with you or the PPs opinion.

That just neatly sums up the standards of political discourse today, unfortunately.

BIossomtoes · 11/10/2025 18:48

You may perceive it to be an insult but that wasn’t the intent. 🤷‍♀️

which left wing algorithms are pushing left wing propaganda?

GB news is right wing and BBC has reform people on its program more than any other political party, along with daily mail, telegraph, express, times, metro, sun, being right wing along with X being completely right wing and of course cambridge analytica harvesting data to push right wing

whilst left wing there is the micro, independent and guardian

What can an individual do to keep the Tories and Labour out more like.

Ballerinacappucine · 11/10/2025 20:29

Maybe use his own vote wisely, allow others to do the same and then learn to accept that things don’t always work out as we expect or want them to. When there’s a choice to be made with various options there will always be those who aren’t necessarily happy with the outcome. That’s democracy, his views don’t equal correct and those of others equal wrong. He might find reform offensive but it doesn’t make him right

It's just a matter of perspective. You see things from the left, I from the (centre) right. The BBC is notoriously left wing for a start; youre not going to get many of its staff admitting to being a Reform voter! TBF the better written and more intelligent papers such as the Telegraph is Conservative (although I am not happy with its dumbing down lately). Perhaps the Times although I think they can be for Labour too.

There was a recent survey done that found that the majority of the establishment (including the professions) is left wing.

its not perspective, look at how many times garage, tire and now Zia ( who isn't even an elected mp) are invited onto BBC question time - no other party gets the same invitation number.

But it would be greta if you could answer the question asked

Encourage his party of choice to actually address the issues that are causing people to vote Reform. All else is just kicking the can down the road.
