What can an individual do to keep Reform out?

I have a young friend (a university student) who is getting depressed about the prospect of Reform getting in next election. He thinks that the UK is fucked, basically. He's left-leaning, I assume a Labour voter. I've advised him to get politically engaged (so that in the future he'll at least be able to feel that he did what he could). He's not the most outgoing of people, though is interested in politics. Can anyone suggest how he could become usefully politically engaged to try to reduce the Reform vote? Not just joining a party and turning up to meetings, but actually doing something?

Well, youve got no excuse! Just type in Google Telegraph..Revealed: The Left-wing bias of Britain’s establishment
Study shows members more likely to be ashamed of country’s imperial past

Was in Telegraph (9th Oct)

you seem to be linking to how people voted in the last election, how are you seeing this as relevant?

The mainstay was that the MSM are right wing leaning, you state that the MSM are left leaning and I asked for evidence to your claim

No the point I was making is that the establishment is stuffed with the left. So you don't need to be worried that the right are in some way advantaged.

The establishment are who runs this country by the way.

And I answered your point a while ago. It's just bias and perception as to how you see the media v how I do.

Paul2023 · 11/10/2025 21:05

We have general elections every four / five years. You get a chance to vote a government in or out.
Its not perfect but it’s democracy.

No point getting depressed over it ,as you can’t decide how people vote. You obviously feel strongly enough to create a thread on behalf of your “friend”.

Your ‘friend ‘needs to get on with life and do what’s best for them.

Edited

The point that was being made was that the media - on which voters rely for information - is overwhelmingly right wing. As borne out by the YouGov survey.

Oh you can get a survey to say anything! We all know that. There's no ability to quantify bias. It just depends on who is judging. I think it's an utterly ridiculous assertion that the right are greater represented in the media. I can't even switch the Today programme on anymore or those useless Radio 4 leftie "comedy shows". And you presumably think opposite. So there you go!

Anyway you've got Owen Jones and James OB so I don't know what you're complaining about! 😏

They aren't. See...I think one thing, you think another depending on your political bias.

Anyway let's just get back to the topic of the thread as this has got a bit dull.

Oh you can get a survey to say anything!

it was you that brought up about surveys - There was a recent survey done that found that the majority of the establishment (including the professions) is left wing.

so perhaps tell yourself about this...

I agree 100% with absolutely everything you have said, Mike.

Read up on Reform"s policies and publicise them e.g. 1.stop giving money to companies
that use/produce renewable energy
2. scrap goals to reach net zero carbon emissions 3. abandon plans to scrap no fault evictions 4. make it easier to hire and fire workers 5.withdraw benefits if job seekers do not find work within 4 months or after 2 job offers 6. increase private health care/give 20% tax relief to private health care providers 7.leave the European Convention on Human Rights (which we were instrumental in setting up after WW2.)

Many of their policies will directly attack working people and the young and make their lives more precarious and fearful. This what the Left are concerned about.

Many of those policies are a positive for a large part of the electorate. And its Labour policies that's are damaging young people's prospects.

The human rights act you refer to, I think Reform mean the ECHR act 1998, which sadly has been hijacked to the advantage of terrorists and criminals. The one Tony Blair signed us up to in 2000.
We lived quite happy without it until 2000 so I agree it needs a changing.

European Convention on Human Rights is an international treaty.

The Human Rights Act 1998 incorporated the ECHR into domestic UK law.

I think people need to understand Why the ‘far right’ are becoming more popular. What is happening? Why is it happening. The root cause - is wealth inequality.

4/5 Reform voters I know all seem financially comfortable, not struggling.
Do you mean they like Reform because they WANT wealth inequality to be entrenched and strengthened? I can easily believe that.

The 5th voter (chap) isn't struggling but definitely watches the pennies & wife is in a low paid sector. He is also the only one who has been to Uni (has a PhD even) but doesn't really value Uni degrees.
