…..disappointed and angry right now? I’m still, and always will be, a Labour supporter-it’s the party that most closely aligns with my political, philosophical and moral beliefs. But bloody hell, surely the least we can expect is basic competence?

I think what disappoints me most are the constant comms failures and their apparent inability to craft a simple national narrative of redemption - one that names the problems and the choices we have to make to solve them, and why it will be worth the sacrifice .

I just don't think it's that fucking hard! 'these things, A B and C, are what makes Britain great. But these are precisely the things that we're in danger of losing. Both the Tories and Reform are backed by the Dark Forces of Global Capital, who will be delighted when we lose A, B and C forever. So we've got some hard decisions to make - but if we make them together, we can rebuild the Britain that made us all proud.'

Available at reasonabe hourly rates Keir.

I completely agree with you. It’s incredibly frustrating. I, too, am available and would happily work for nothing except my train fare!

SisterTeatime · 06/09/2025 12:15

Well I think the people, policies and comms are all pretty awful!

Having said that, since Boris purged the Tories of anyone decent, they don’t have much to offer either these days.

I’m more disappointed and angry as to how the press are constantly having a go.

Theyve inherited a nightmare. And there are continuing problems.

Im sick of Farages face and im sick of the press sticking the boot in.

THIS

Labour gets a far easier ride off the press than they should do.

Similar economic situations under a different government were reported very differently.

Labour lack ability and self awareness. That’s a dangerous combination.

Similar economic situations under a different government were reported very differently.

Two completely contradictory sentences. The second is correct. The previous government was given far more latitude by the mainstream media. As far as I remember none of them pointed out the absolute folly of £10 billion of unfunded NI cuts.

SisterTeatime · 06/09/2025 12:23

Yes, left wing governments tend to get hammered by the media on economics where right wing ones get an easier ride. The same is true in the US.

This. Labour absolutely Could Do Better, but the way that the DM and it’s ilk are going for it is beyond ridiculous.
I genuinely fear that Reform will get in next time, and we’ll all be fucked.

Truss pales into insignificance with where we are now with Labour

No I really don’t think she does.

What goes around comes around. The DM went for it with party gate and other stuff, Labour are just finding out what it's like.

They've tried 'difficult decisions' already. And 'it'll be hard but get better'. The trouble is their policies are bad so the lines won't wash.

Comprehension not your strong suit?

No because she did what any of us would have done in the same circumstances and it was avoidance not evasion. Saw a solicitor speaking saying he has processed this arrangement for many non politician clients and it’s legal

They didn't do either of those well enough. Their message wasn't simple and it wasn't sufficiently optimistic. No-one wants to make sacrifices unless they're given a very clear vision of what's they'll gain in return - and who the Baddies are.

Labour has failed to explain simply - literally in terms like The Forces of Global Capital or Shadowy Financial Interests - whose interests the Tories and Reform are promoting.

Keep it very simple. Construct an 'Us' of positive nostalgic values. Pit that 'Us' against a shadowy 'Them' of vested interests who cash in when We lose. Rally and unite Us against these Dark Forces, towards a Bright Future where things Get Better and we're Proud Britons. Churchillian basically.

If I could say one thing to their Vision team it would be that Labour could and should own 'positive nostalgic values'. Everyone's too young to remember the real past now, so they could really construct it as they wish it was - community, solidarity, helping each other out, standing together as we've always done against the shadowy forces of exploitation who've made themselves unimaginably rich by crushing our standard of living and turning us against one other.

I appreciate the effort but no I don't think this will fly. For a start Labour need global capital as much as anyone. If anything some see them as more tied up in globalism eg WEF as below.

It's not a comms issue, it's a policy one.

How many “forces”, “dark forces”, “shadowy forces” and “shadowy interests” can you cram into a post?

It sounds like you want Labour’s PR team to be staffed by David Icke, Mad-Eye Moody and Professor Van Helsing.

But that's my whole point - that is what's required now.

There's a reason the Tories and Reform pitch things as they do.

The population is badly educated and lacks critical thinking skills; it's accustomed to consume ideas at the level of fairy tale or action movie.

Lots will be outraged at that, I'm sure but that's the reality (and one reason why those of us who broadly share Labour's values want them to succeed is to be around long enough to change that fact.)

It doesn't matter what's true (though this message broadly is). What matters is how it feels.

Keir is an administrator and a 20th century man, a utilitarian and a rationalist. The 21st century doesn't give a fuck about those things. It rewards liars and story tellers. It's better to be the latter.

He is a story teller just a very bad one. 'Tool maker' 'smash the gangs' 'difficult decisions' you name it he's used it.

They're are all surface level lines that people can see through.

thestudio · 06/09/2025 13:31

None of this is to say that policy doesn't matter - of course it does. But it matters far more to people like us, who are disappointed in Labour (not talking about the obious BLiar types on this thread) than to Undecideds or Red Wallers.

If the Tories and now the rise of Reform have taught us anything it's that your policies can be anything you want as long as have a strong narrative.

I don't understand how this government has consistently failed to see that. Even I don't know what their narrative is and I've voted for them all my life.

Hmmm. I’m not sure where the dark, shadowy etc forces went to in your reply. But hey ho.

As for lies, half-truths and tall stories, Labour’s been telling them constantly. It doesn’t seem to have worked so far.

The state teaching establishment is broadly left wing in the UK . So presumably to blame for the population being badly educated and lacking critical thinking skills.

I really wish they’d get a better PR team! It’s cringeworthy. Kier has very little charisma. He needs help now!
