I hope this link works. It’s a counter for the number of people dying in the world every day as a result of Trump’s decision to end overseas aid. For those who won’t click on links or in case it doesn’t work, today it estimates 149,676 adults and 311,291 children have so far died because of this, with around 88 people dying every hour.

True. But nothing like as much as Trump has.

But it does remind us there have been criminal presidents before.

Thanks, Harriet: that's interesting. It doesn't include domestic US deaths, or deaths in wars, so the full figure must be rather more.

HarrietBond · 31/08/2025 17:02

No. That’s purely deaths arising from the sudden cessation of aid. Babies and small children dying because their medication disappeared overnight for example.

Yes, of whom Nixon is the glaring example everyone knows about. But name another? Because Nixon got caught and got rid of, after all.

Reagan is widely believed to have had Alzheimer's (which was covered up by his associates) for at least some of the time he was in the White House. I wonder what we will find out about Trump's mental condition once he's out of office.

We're being very biased. We really need at least two Democrats to set against those two, don't we.

Come on, Trump supporters! Let's hear from you on this! I'm not all that informed about American presidential murderous criminality.

(Clinton? Carter? Johnson? Kennedy? This is receding into history; how about Truman or Roosevelt?)

Clinton was certainly a sleaze and a liar.

HarrietBond · 31/08/2025 17:20

Powerful men tend to be shits. US Presidents have done a lot of shitty things.

How many of them though have launched an attack against democracy in the same way as Trump and his team?

Again, that's true; but how many children may he have been implicated in killing? I genuinely don't know the answer to that, because the only scandal I recall about him involved sexual misbehaviour. And there's some stuff about money but it doesn't seem to have been all that real, as opposed to mud being slung. You know, like "but her emails!" was mud-slinging.

JFK had sex-scandals as well, didn't he? And of course he escalated Vietnam, which I found very hard to forgive at the time.

If one of them had, would the USA still have a democracy?

Given how quickly Trump has dismantled the ‘checks and balances’ we have always been told the Founding Fathers so cleverly put in place, I suspect not.

Yeah, well, we need to remember that the Founding Fathers main interest was .... the Founding Fathers. It's a miracle of spin that the average American ever thought they were the intended recipients of the tax dodgers.

(Is one take on US history ....)

HarrietBond · 31/08/2025 17:27

One take, yes…

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 31/08/2025 17:45

I do feel that "no taxation without representation" is a fair sort of warcry.

Indeed. That's why everyone paying tax in the US is allowed a vote. Otherwise the whole "rebellion" thing might look a tad hypocritical in years to come.

Elsewhere on social media, a nurse commented that the hand bruising will have been caused by an IV used to administer diuretics...Heart failure was the first thing that came to my mind, but - given his age, his kidneys are probably in a bad way too.

When my dad died, we were told that the diuretics administered for heart failure had damaged his kidneys further.

I'm very sorry about that, and yes long term use starts buggering up kidneys.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 31/08/2025 17:56

Does that include hidden taxes like the excess costs from tariffs? Everyone will be paying those. A bit like VAT.

Lalgarh · 31/08/2025 17:58

CharlotteCChapel · 31/08/2025 13:38

He's not healthy though. According to the white house he has chronic vein insufficiency. Most commentators have suggested that its more like to be heart failure due to the sheer amount of swelling. He's also showing signs of dementia and if that bulge around his thigh is attached to a catheter he may have kidney disease too.

He lives on McDonald's and diet coke and doesn't exercise so he's a perfect storm for these.

If Trump has a catheter it's going to be agony and I pity who has to change it

ToWhitToWhoo · 31/08/2025 18:05

I wish Axel Rudukana was dead, or better, had never been born. But this has nothing to do with Trump.

Similarly, i am glad that the Moors murderers are dead, and wish they had never been born.

But none of these vile people are in power over a large country, and influencing the whole world. Trump is. That's why we're more preoccupied with him.

TooBigForMyBoots · 31/08/2025 18:52

BuildsLikeASkyscraper · 31/08/2025 16:14

He's obese by BMI, but not - as per the original post I responded to - morbidly so. People who don't like him tend to exaggerate the obesity and have negative emotions about his perceived bad health, which they attribute to his own actions e.g. his reported fast food diet. Perhaps that implies a moral failing which he now embodies.

I'm interested in the fury sometimes directed at Trump's body. Not to mention his vulgar tastes. I think the pattern in which Trump is disliked is interesting: I wonder if he actually does or thinks anything different to the long gallery of previous American presidents and similarly powerful men or if he outrages because the bad stuff seems to be on the surface.

What do you believe he weighs and how do you know?

PandoraSocks · 31/08/2025 19:04

Does he really live on McDonalds? He could go to the best restaurants the world has to offer.

PandoraSocks · 31/08/2025 19:13

Lalgarh · 31/08/2025 19:09

He had his own branch of McDeaths go with him on his trip to the gulf

😲

He also likes his steaks "very well done".

Heathen!
